Amazing how much more snow they get on the other end of Michigan.

I spent a couple of winters in Marquette and it could get brutal for sure.  It wasn't uncommon to see drifts 20 feet high.

As you know it can snow a foot a day all week up there on the shores of Lake Superior.  I've seen piles of snow in Munising and Grand Marias that i thought i was in the mountains somewhere

Up in Houghton-Hancock they have low mount (summer) mailboxes and signage and high mount mailboxes and signage (for winter).  At least up there they use hot sand and a bit of CaCl unlike here.  Sand id better anyway, gives some grip and don't rot your car out.

We were at Grand Marais back in the mid to late 70s and visiting the Devil's Log Slide on the 4th of July.

I found a spot where the snow had piled up during the winter and then a storm must have pushed sand from the dunes over the snow.  It was all on the side of the hill so no direct sunlight.  We dug into the snow and had snowball fights on the 4th of July!

i never noticed the mail boxes.  i did take note of the one street in Houghton business district that ran from an upper level street down to the main street. It had a huge cover overtop, asuming to keep the road free of ice and snow to keep vehicles out of the shops on main street.

Back in the 50-60s it was still common to see barrels of sand sitting along steep hills or long grades up there.  There would be a shovel in every barrel.  If you couldn't make it up or down the hill safely you could go to the closest barrel and spread some sand until you could get moving again.  After that the roads were either mostly rerouted or cut down to avoid the steep stretches and the county road commissions took over the sand spreading.  I assume there was something mixed in with the sand because it never seemed to be frozen when you needed it.

MCSD has posted this on Facebook.  Please stay off the ice on Lake Erie.

Short video shows the shelf ice building in the area of where the man is missing on Brest Bay.

Hope they are ok. Would be nice to bill them for all the expenses. There are accidents that we expect authorities rescue people. And then there are idiots that should pay the expenses.

I thought I had read sometime in the last few years that some/most do get a bill sent to them???????

There's been some talk at different times of the CG charging but as far as I know they don't charge anyone.  They would be the major cost in this recent rescue.

Various fire departments and rescue squads around the country may charge although I'm not aware of any in Monroe County that are doing that.

It's one thing to send some of these people a statement and another to ever collect anything.  Actually, the CG would probably be in the best position to have the IRS withhold tax refunds.

There was some kind of a very small fire behind the Kroger Store on S. Monroe Street this afternoon.

Maybe our local arsonist is getting bolder :-\ :-\ :-\

There was a time Bedford FD charged $100 per vehicle called for an illegal fire

The scanner has been pretty quiet so far this morning.

It's the middle of January and drivers have finally figured out that it's 'winter' out there!

Hopefully everyone will keep driving at a road reasonable speed.

Over the years, I've found some great stuff in dumpsters behind stores like Lowes and Meijers.  I once found a complete Troy Bilt tiller in a dumpster at Lowes.  Someone had broken the carburetor off and tossed it.  No big deal for me.  Replaced the carb with an aftermarket one and it's still tilling, just fine.  Had a heck of a time getting it out of the dumpster however, it was heavy.

Dumpster diving is a great hobby in my opinion.

Hopefully, the heat was turned off.  Body's tend to stink pretty quickly when deceased and not embalmed.  People are strange.
