It's still several months until November 10th but there's a nice article in The Blade about the upcoming 40th anniversary of the tragedy.

The ship was built at a River Rouge shipyard so it's highly likely some Monroe County people were involved in the construction.  Home port was Toledo so very likely some Monroe County residents had relatives or friends that were lost.

The article mentions the events that will be going on all summer at various locations in the lakes...  several are nearby and others may be a nice destination for some vacation time!

She was a leaker.  I worked as a fitter/welder on her in Cleveland, 3 years prior to he breaking up.

I was in Grand Marais to go deer hunting a couple of days after the wreck...   the water in the bay and in the lake was still all stirred up and muddy...   it's frequently a very nice clear blue-green in that area.  We watched the bay with binoculars and a spotting scope the whole week wondering if we might spot a body.  Didn't realize at the time that not a single body would ever be recovered.

I was a college kid heading back to school and we crossed the Mackinaw Bridge in a hippie van during that storm...     can't remember much other than the Gordon Lightfoot song

But we have to pass the bill so you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy.

We went across one night heading northi in a blizzard...   couldn't see a thing out the windshield so we had to watch out the side windows and just 'gauge' how close we were to either side!!!

I liked the end question   "What do you think happened?".....  She broke her back.  The Fitz always had issues with flexing.  She cracked in the middle, took on water and sank.  Like I said last year, she was a leaker, always was.

Article from The Blade today mentions the major collection on Display at the Lucas County Library:

And yet another article from Mlive...

Nice to see all this attention to an event with so many local ties.

I have personal ties since I spent so much of my youth in the upper peninsula and on Lake Superior.

My grandfather did some commercial fishing over the years right after WWII right in the area west of Whitefish Point so I was pretty familiar with that area.

I was actually in Grand Marais (Michigan...  there's one in Minnesota too) to go deer hunting on the 13th and we even spent some time looking for debris along the lake.  By then we knew there had been a tragedy but the details or even the exact location weren't really public yet.

I wasn't up here at that time, but obviously heard about it after the fact.

I met a guy who grew up on Kelly's Island when I first moved to the area and he told me that damn near everyone he knew was around a radio of some sorts listening to the event.  He said word spread quickly before the eventual sinking and many were listening live.
