Virus and Hackers
« on: January 28, 2016, 09:59:49 AM »

I don't know what it was.
Last night reading a post here my iPad did some funny things, screen changed a little and then i noticed some porn on the bottom of the screen.  Finally i was able to get out of MEN but then noticed my screen colors had changed and all my saved passwords were gone.  The iPad was set to privacy more.
Something to be on the lookout for?

You're saying you were reading a post here on MonroeTalks?

Well I've never seen any porn here although if I'm on my phone (Motorola, not an I) I don't have any adblocker installed and I do see some ads for some Russian Bride site...   always kind of wondered where that fell in with the 'family values' background here ;) ;) ;)

I'm going to guess it's a coincidence that you were 'here' when it happened.  I'm not an expert by any means but know my Samsung Galaxy tablet can view multiple websites at one time.

You could have even had a case where an open wifi within range of you was somehow transmitting the porn.  Seems dangerous on their part to do that (sounds like a good way to get busted if it's illegal porn).  Maybe they were trying to stream it to their TV or another device and somehow it overpowered your device and just appeared!!!

It may have been "pre-fetching", an old dial-up trick many ISP's and other vendor's used to promote "faster speeds."

While you were stalled on a web page reading, like from an un-named poster that sometimes gets a little overboard in the copy/pasta zone, it would "look ahead" and load pages such that if you went to one of them, viola, it popped right up.

Yep I was on Monroe Talks. The porn was at very bottom where I notice ads appearing. I can see how someone's ad gets hacked. But my privacy setting was changed.

I haven't seen any evidence of anyone using my signon and passwords but I'm inclined to change.  The good thing I don't use same passwords for important stuff that I do for the social network stuff. And I don't have the computer save the signon and password for important stuff.

My suggestion is for you to stay off this website forever.  Us other republicans have you covered. Problem solved!

On the long shot that possibly it is the forum itself that has been compromised here's some related reading material that may let you diagnose what has happened.  I'm not very familiar with an Ipad so not sure what may really be different from my Samsung Galaxy.

That's a good bet...I'm sure MEN doesn't put a lot of time and money into it's software.  iPad and smart phone probably not that much different.  Ipad just a big phone..

SMF forum software is actually free...   anyone can download and set up a forum online (as long as they have a server to run it on).

Anybody having problems with people hacking Instagram?  Mines been hacked 3 times the last 4 days.  I get back by linking thru Facebook and changing the password.  But later it's hacked  again. I even get emails from Instagram saying they detected suspicious activity and secured my account. Well they lie. It was hacked.  They changed my profile data and slip in a porn pic.  The populate the website with what looks like a porn site. I didn't click on the link.

I love it that an IT guy on vacation stopped the latest Malware attack.

Good for his employer to give him another week off.

It looks like several other companies owe him too!

Funny that he was worried that he made it worse for awhile - that must have been an oh shite moment!

I also love how he got into the business!

Quote
The computer expert revealed that he has been in touch with the government's National Cyber Security Centre about the fix - and that to say thank you his bosses have given him another week off work, which he plans to spend surfing.
He said: 'I was trying to avoid doing work for a week, doing odd jobs around the house, but I just got pulled back in.
'I don't really want anything, I just want to get back to my job really. My boss rewarded my with a new week off to replace my not-really week off.'
But the 22-year-old does not believe the attack was specifically targeted at the NHS - rather that the health service 'happened to be vulnerable' and got 'caught in the crosshairs'.
Nevertheless he says it is 'a serious thing and there is a real risk to real people's health if you're shutting down hospital systems.'
The young self-taught cyber expert said he initially became interested in computers at the age of 11 when his mother and father installed parental control software on their family machine.

These young computer guys amaze me. I worked in IT for most of my career but this stuff Is out of my reach.  My company hired a young guy out of Notre Dame a few years back just as a regular IT guy.  It didn't take long to find out he was way beyond any of us. Besides his job he would give demo's in our auditorium on how to protect your computer and what kind of actions would lead to easy hacking.
As a demo, he would select some web sites and within minutes hack into their systems.

I had a new telematics module put into my car Friday.

The old one was 2G - and ATT shut off the network, so they had to put in a 3G module.  Why didn't they put in a 4G module so it would work a bit longer?  I'm guessing cost.

I couldn't login the car Friday - so I assumed the dealer didn't register the new module right - so I went back by - and the mechanic said nope - I did all the computer registration and called the 800 number - and they said it would be live in 5 minutes.

It still hasn't worked - and I am not sure if it is on ATT or the Information Center they are calling into being in their shell still.

Maybe someone hasn't paid to get their data back yet?
