Since ther landfill is just to the northwest of there maybe they're hoping they'll get fewer complaints about the smell of the landfill ;D ;D ;D

At least it will be a short drive for fertilizer. ;D

I thought for sure I was going to see 'The Rover' claim it's first victim on Telegraph yesterday.  We were heading north in front of Lowe's and there was a single truck heading south with the escort car behind it.  The light turned yellow and the truck was going too fast and was too close to the light to stop so he (I'm assuming it was a he) just blew on through the light...

A typical semi trailer is 62' or so...   these pipes are about 80'...  The light got to red while the pipe was about halfway through and then it has the brief delay before the cross light turned green...   followed by the escort car blowing a completely red (by several seconds) light.  Fortunately the driver leading the way out of Lowe's was not texting or sexting or even drinking their coffee but instead was actually paying attention and driving like they were supposed to be.  Kudos to that driver for avoiding what could have been a very bad scenario.  Telegraph had already claimed one lift yesterday :( :( :(

A question for SCF...

In a situation where there is an extra wide load with escorts front and back how far is the front escort supposed to be 'out in front' on a limited access highway?  In this case it was 275 just north of 94.  We were heading north and passed the wide load.  He (again, I'm assuming) was only driving about 50 but the load was literally the full width of the lane on 275.  It was one of those articulating trailers with a whole bunch of extra tires.  I was surprised at how far up and down the load was moving in a nice gentle 'bounce'.  It wasn't particularly high...  maybe 8 or 10' at the most.

Anyway, we get past safely...   everyone in the middle lane had slowed down although just as we were next to the trailer a white Dodge pickup blew by at the 'normal' 75 mph or so.  Then about a half mile down the road we see the 'front' escort car...   not sure if he didn't get the message the load had slowed down or if that is the distance they're supposed to be out front.  I've never seen one that far out front on regular streets and roads.

Law states the escort vehicles have to be within 'visual recognition' of the permit load at all times.  Usually the driver is communicating with the escort drives via 2 way radio (not a CB either).  usually FM transceiver.  A lot of times, the front escort will pull ahead to check for anything unusual like, crowded on ramps, or emergency vehicles on the side of the road that may interfere with the transport.  Ypu will also see them pull way ahead when checking overpass height (what the pole sticking up on the lead car is for.  It's set at the maximum object height that is being transported and the end of the pole has a sensor on it that signals the escort driver if the clearance is close.

Most times on surface streets, the escorts will be right with the load because of the proximity of other drivers and the frequency of stop lights and crossing intersections.

In the case of the pipe, the rear escort should have waited for the light to cycle and the truck driver should have anticipated the light better.  Typically you observe the 'walk, don't walk signs.  Average time to cycle on a traffic light) is 7-10 seconds from the time the sign changes from walk to don't walk.  Thats how it's done btw.

heavy loads all 'bounce' up and down.  If the trailer didn't flex with the weight, it would snap in two.  All trailers are designed that way.

Two of the tractors that they are using to haul the pipe are sitting in Freightliner of Toldeo's back lot, I presume with engine or drivetrain issues.  None of the drivers are locals.  They all came in with the trucks and trailers from Texas, i think.  Trucks (tractors) all have Texas IRP plates.

That landfill is reaching epic height proportions.  Lot of garbage under there, probably some unaccounted for bodies as well...

The motion on this load was way more than 'flex' in the trailer...  I'll bet it was moving up and down a good 14-16" and in a rhythm not even related to anything on the road.  The load was completely tarped so no way to tell for sure what it was.

Slowly undulating is what I would say it was doing.

Strange to say the least :-\ :-\ :-\

The gyrations or undulations are magnified by the air suspension I'm sure the trailer had.  Modern trailers are all air ride and have shocks but if the shocks aren't replaced the trailer undulates, especially with a heavy load.

It obviously made it to where it was going or we would have read about it in the paper.

It was a fairly new trailer...  one of those with lots and lots of extra tires and extendable length and width so I would assume it had air suspension.

They're working on repaving Lewis Ave. from Ida Center north to Ida.  Now when that guy wants to 'fly' with his Focus he'll have smooth road from US-23 all the way back to Toledo.  I wonder if he got his car back yet.  Used to be when a car got impounded in Toledo it was very, very expensive to get it back.

We took Strasburg up to M-50 and into town and then north on Telegraph to Stewart yesterday and only met up with one truck hauling pipe.  That was about 3:15 and we usually see them hauling later than that.  Maybe that was the last section or maybe they're just slowing down?

Interesting to see where the pipes are coming from...  let alone how a Texas firm got the contract as I did note they all have texas plates...

I assume that after the pipe passes thru an area the delivery routes change to accommodate where they need pipe. I saw them this morning on 275 and 94.
I also assume the trucks are from Texas because it is a specialty trailer and that is where they are from. If there was a cheeper closer alternative I would think you would be seeing them right now.

So maybe what we saw was the last piece heading west?

So are they being manufactured in the area - or coming through the St. Lawrence seaway?   Find it hard to vision a cheap route that ends up at 94/275

They got delivered to the Port of Monroe - and they got stored there.

Even more odd then - as I see them coming down Telegraph - so did they have to take them north to get some lining?

I think it is just a haul route that winds them thru town because they are so long. They won't fit everywhere and have to have a pretty generous turning radius.
