Mining again at the Holcim quarry off 23.
« on: August 02, 2017, 10:07:05 AM »

London Township approved a permit request to begin (again) quarrying again for limestone at the Holcim site off US23.  The new outfit wants to start ANOTHER quarry slightly north and east of the existing one.  London Township gave their blessing.  The new outfit stated that the water from the new quarry would flow into the existing drain and smell like (sulfur).  Whats new with that anyway.  They won't exceed the 5.5 million gallons per day outflow that is already in place.  Whoopee.

At least it's farther away from us and no stinky smell from the old demolished kilns.

The new company I suspect will get into it with MCRC in as much as they flatly stated that MCRC was responsible for maintaining the proposed haul routes..  We'll see how that plays out.  I'm sure Assinbacker willl have some input and not positive either.

Live...you are the Supervisor in London Twp., how does that play?

Holcim still owns a lot of property out in that area.  I went back 5 years and the only sale is one from Holcim Inc. to Holcim US.  Probably just straightening out a glitch.

The request is for an expansion of the existing pit . The main quarry is in Dundee twp but the land they want to expand into is in London twp. I haven't read the article but there is probably more to it than the planning commission just being able to approve the expansion.

According to what we read in the MN, the London Township Planning Commish has the final say (according to Township Charter), which I find to be very strange.  Don't know of any other governing entity that has that, that way.  Needs to be addressed.  Live is the Supervisor, he needs to look into that.

Interesting stipulations too (again according to the article)...  London gets X number of tons of limestone for roads but NO HAULING OF ANY KIND of the stone, the company chlorides the gravel haul roads but MCRC has to maintain them as well as the paved roads leading to the operation.  Like I said, can't wait for Assinbackers comments on that.

Sulfur.  It's coming out of the existing quarry and always will, unless the quit pumping it.  Then it will fill up and become a very deep lake..  (fat chance of that).

When they let the one in Monroe Township fill up it took a few years...   I never smell sulphur around it though.  There is (was) a sulphur spring just east of the old quarry.  It shows on several old maps and I think I see it on Google aerial but don't hear much mention of it anymore.  I'm wondering if when the nearby quarry was active it may have taken the water away from the spring :-\ :-\ :-\

Someone in the Dundee 'touristy' area needs to open a 'sulphur bath'...

They're very popular in Europe and in some areas of the US...   we turn up our nose at what others are paying good money to enjoy!

Too bad this photo isn't bigger ;) ;) ;)

Sulphur for the most part is in gas form. You smell it because it gasses off as the water leaks in from the sides when the pit is empty and when the pumped water from the bottom is discharged into the settling ponds. Most likely the smell will stop when the pumping stops and the pit fills up.

That sounds logical and would explain why we don't smell it at the old Monroe Quarry.

It solved the smell problem at the London Sand quarry also !!

I've lived with sulfur for years out here.  It really subsided when Holcim/Holnam/Holderbank quit mining the old pit.  We went from 30 ppm to almost nothing in a matter of 90 days.  I still inject H2O2 in the raw water but not much anymore.  Post injection, I run the water through an industrial Cumo filter unit with a spun cellulose element that get's changed monthly.

You'd never know it's sulfur water unless I told you.

I see they are going to post treat with H2O2 prior to dumping in the creek / ditch.  I'll be surprised if they use an adequate amount of Hydrogen Peroxide, it ain't cheap.  Problem is, when you treat raw water with H2O2, it precipitates the sulfur dioxide off as a solid paste like substance.  I can see that goo lining the creek bed, depending on sulfur content of the discharged water.

Least we don't have the stink from the kiln's anymore or the red algae growing on the water in the horse tanks.  All went bye-bye with the plant shutdown.
