The Weather
« on: February 12, 2016, 08:04:19 AM »

I figured I'd start a thread about the weather, in general.  A place everyone can make comments about the latest forecast, or the latest weather event.

I'm sure everyone has noticed this winter has been very mild, and with very little precipitation.

Can anyone remember a winter as dry as this one?  I can't.

Normally I have five or six snow plowing events per season, on average.  This year, I've had two, and they were very small events, with barely enough snow to plow.

Looking ahead into late February, the forecast is for more of the same, with no measurable snow predicted.

I don't know about you, but even though it's costing me money, I'm enjoying this winter.   ;D

I thought about you yesterday afternoon...

we were in Toledo and I saw a plow truck parked in a parking lot...

it was a Dodge (several years old) and had a folding stainless steel plow...

It looked like he'd been out there polishing on the blade at some point because when the sun hit it just right it was 'blinding'!!!

Sounds like we better get out and enjoy the heat wave today...

temps and especially the 'wind chill' is going to be crashing fast for a few days....

time for some 'indoor' activities (hey, it's also Valentine's Day...   perfect planning) :-* :-* :-*

NASA - What's the Difference Between Weather and Climate?

The difference between weather and climate is a measure of time. Weather is what conditions of the atmosphere are over a short period of time, and climate is how the atmosphere "behaves" over relatively long periods of time.

When we talk about climate change, we talk about changes in long-term averages of daily weather. Today, children always hear stories from their parents and grandparents about how snow was always piled up to their waists as they trudged off to school. Children today in most areas of the country haven't experienced those kinds of dreadful snow-packed winters, except for the Northeastern U.S. in January 2005. The change in recent winter snows indicate that the climate has changed since their parents were young.

If summers seem hotter lately, then the recent climate may have changed. In various parts of the world, some people have even noticed that springtime comes earlier now than it did 30 years ago. An earlier springtime is indicative of a possible change in the climate.

In addition to long-term climate change, there are shorter term climate variations. This so-called climate variability can be represented by periodic or intermittent changes related to El Niño, La Niña, volcanic eruptions, or other changes in the Earth system.

May be what happened to the other libs as well.

I guess disabling the report to admin link only on the lib side was indicative of the slanted games they play.

Edited to add:

This is the only way to answer some of the questions posed:

1) I did nothing to warrant the banishment, it's political.

2) It's the router that's blocked but considering all the nonsense right-wing games being played by those running the site...it's just not worth it to bypass the banishment block.

Speaking of plows.  We have drivers in Mi like this too.

And I've seen more than a few of them right around here too ;) ;) ;)

I just had to run out to the car to get my tablet...

must have been a dozen or so planes in various positions of turning and heading back north to Detroit Metro.  They seemed especially low but that may be just because the air is so 'cold and clear'.

I hope I don't have to go back out for anything else tonight.  We'll leave the heat up a little higher than we normally do for the next few days.  Then, just in case something does happen to our furnace we've got a little bigger 'cushion'!!!  We have a gas fireplace in the basement that puts out about 40K BTUs.   I've been working down there and have a bunch of stuff piled up around it so it would probably take me an hour to dig it out enough to use it (safely anyway).

Might be easier just to lay in bed and wait for spring to get here ;D ;D ;D

I had the dogs out just before 6...

none of them stayed out too long...

even the BRD that really seems to 'enjoy' this kind of weather didn't stay too long.  Many days in this weather I'll let her out and she won't come back in right away so I go looking for and find her just laying in a snow pile somewhere.  I guess there wasn't much snow this morning to plop down in!!!

One thermometer said Zero and two said six degrees....

not much difference really and the wind more than covered that difference :o :o :o

My room humidifier is working hard today

Everything is so dry!!!

The dogs were all out and back in fairly quick today...

thermometer is showing 1 degree.  Not much wind so no wind chill warning.  Saw something on 13ABC weather earlier that it will be up to 50 degrees later in the week.  I may go out and mow some lawn just to say I shoveled snow (not very much) and mowed the lawn (not very much) all in a week's time ;) ;) ;)

Temp is up to 20 already :D :D :D

A dusting of fresh snow...

just enough to see where all the critters have been!

I don't even need the blade on the tractor or the blower...

the leaf blower will do just fine ;D ;D ;D

I took the plow off the truck a couple weeks ago.

Looks like it might stay off until December!!

I took the blade off the garden tractor a couple of weeks ago...

then I took the wheels-tires off that have the chains on them too.  I have extra tires-wheels so put on a set and just left the ones with the chains all installed.  I don't like driving around on the chains going 'bump-bump-bump' plus it tears the hell out of the chains in all the mud and dirt.  Sounds like it's going to warm up and melt what snow we have before I need to change them back!!!

First mention of La Niña by NOAA could impact Michigan

I saw where SCF had posted about a dry summer...

sounds like that's going to be a strong possibility if past patterns carry over!

It will be what it will be.  I'm tired of the weather people trying to predict the weather.  They can make a decent attempt to predict it a week or so in advance, but that's about it.  Beyond that, it's just a guess.

Now, guessing YEARS or DECADES in advance, like the global warming nuts, THAT takes a crystal ball!!!  ;D ;D
