Magna was heavily involved in this road test across Michigan!

I was somewhat involved in that project prior to Magna selling off the Interiors group.  The technology has very little impact on interior trim other than how to best mount/attach fiber optic cables throughout the body to the vehicle CPU.  Pretty neat stuff......I wish them luck as I still own a pretty good chunk of their stock in my retirement portfolio.

Considering all the idiots on the road today, distracted driving, no courtesy toward other drivers...  I don't see where driverless cars can fit in.  Sounds to me like accidents waiting to happen

In theory the driverless cars will eliminate exactly the actions you've noted and also help prevent collisions when there are still drivers involved.

It will be a very long curve to get all the vehicles on the road to the driverless point although I'd guess once the tech is all there and it's working someone will make some retrofit units that can be back fitted to most anything on wheels with a power supply.

I suspect we will both be pushing up crabgrass by then

The full benefit can only be realized to your point BRD of when there would be a date out in the future when a full conversion to these types of vehicles will be on the road.  Partial could be realized too though as these vehicles hit the road.....I think if it eliminates texting and driving that would be worth some life savings.

I think you're going to be very surprised how fast this is going to happen now.

This trip they just did was over 80% "hands off" and it was right here in Michigan.

i don't have any idea of the turnover rated of drivers and new vehicles.  i for one, buy a new vehicle and keep it 10 years.  I have one now that is only 2 years old but could be very expensive to maintain out of warrant so i might trade in a couple more years.
And of course there are a lot of first time drivers on the road in older vehicles.

Here's an article that says 11.6 years average in the US...   that's a 2005 vehicle so sounds like their numbers could be pretty close!
