A question on a funeral at Roselawn last week.
« Reply #1080 on: October 05, 2017, 09:06:49 PM »

I was talking to the neighbor across the road one day last week and he asked me if by chance I knew whose funeral had been at Roselawn a day or two earlier in the week.  He said the whole cemetery was full of cars and motorcycles (I wondered if maybe there were two simultaneous burials going on so it made it look really full?).  He said there were also several aerial bucket trucks like a power lineman or a tree trimmer might use but he didn't notice any name on any of them.

I haven't read the obituaries on the MonroeNews website since before we went to Illinois...   I suppose it's possible I could be gone and I don't even know it yet!!!

Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts on who it may have been please post or at least PM me.  I think it was last Thursday or Friday.

My apologies NewDawn.  I should have added that it was not Rich's funeral.  I was talking to the neighbor Friday afternoon before we went to the funeral home to visit Rich so the funeral in question was either Friday or the day before (Thursday for those that have problems remember the days of the week like I do sometimes).

Rich's was literally the one funeral I was aware of although I hadn't seen it myself.  My wife worked with Deb and Gwen when she first started at Kroger so she keeps in touch with them on Facebook.

Downtown this afternoon... bridge closed in our face!
« Reply #1083 on: October 06, 2017, 09:13:05 PM »

We were heading south on Monroe Street this afternoon about 4:55 when we stopped at Elm street for a red light.  Suddenly a patrol car with lights flashing comes off Elm Stl with a DPS truck behind it.  Both the patrol car and the truck stop and a couple of workers jump out and put up 'Road Closed' signs right in our face we had to go west on Elm and across the Roessler street bridge.  We were going to Kroger so just took the back way.  When we left Kroger (maybe 45 minutes) we could see traffic seemed to be flowing both ways on Monroe street so we drove back downtown to see what the closure was for...  the road was wide open and no sign of any closure on the bridge!

Was I imagining this or did we see just witness the quickest bridge repair in Monroe's history?

I saw something strange right about that time today also. I first heard-- not a siren but another waling sound--from a sheriffs car going north on Telegraph rd heading past 7th street. He looked like he was escorting a big monster truck down Telegraph. I thought it strange that a sheriff car would be doing that sort of service but there it was. A little while later I saw a sheriff car pull back in the parking lot of Monroe Grill where the monster truck is housed regularly. I didn't watch to see what the sheriff was doing I just thought it odd the an official duty of the sheriff was to escort this truck to wherever it was going.
Maybe a parade of some kind ? Football related ? homecoming maybe ?

Since it was a Friday night I kind of thought maybe something for a homecoming festivity or even just a football pre-game but we didn't see anything on our nice long slow drive down Elm and then the one vehicle at a time left turn onto Roessler.  Didn't see anything on Front as we crossed either.  I did have a fire scanner with me and no chatter on that but it wouldn't have picked up the sheriff's escort car.

I do notice that monster truck sitting out there.  I think it's got Monroe Dodge painted on it somewhere.  I've always been going to go over and check it out when we eat there but it's never there when we go in.  We haven't been around as much this summer to eat anywhere in town.

Hopefully our detour was for something positive like a homecoming parade.  Keeping a bunch of young people entertained and out of trouble for 45 minutes was worth my time for the detour.

The Mackinac Bridge is turning 60 and still looking good: How long can it last?
« Reply #1086 on: October 29, 2017, 09:39:33 PM »

Interesting that they are just now planning for some major repairs.  I felt pretty safe both walking and driving it across it during our recent Labor Day trip!

We were there!  just didn't get to walk it - as the new changes caught us and about 5k others off guard

I see they are re-thinking the whole issue - as it was a cluster for how it occurred.
Not sure why they didn't have the Ferries involved - as well as someone doing the Math...

You'd think engineer's could determine   X buses/hr  and travel time = # of people able to make the walk in the new timeframe!

Each bus had a piece of paper with a number in the lower right corner of the windshield.  I was walking on the grate most of the way (could pass all the slower walkers easily that way) so it was easy to watch the numbers on the approaching buses that were just one lane away at that point.  The highest number I caught was 139 so I'm assuming they must have had around 150 buses.  I saw some tie ups on both ends of the bridge which seemed like could have been smoother.
