Monroe Man Accidentally Shoots Himself, Dies
« on: October 10, 2012, 12:05:07 PM »

A Monroe man accidentally shot himself in the head and died while displaying a handgun inside a house on E. Second St. Tuesday night, police said.
Monroe police identified the victim as Michael Bussell, 24, who lived at the house in the 800 block with seven other people, including five children under the age of 13.
Detective Bryan Gee said the shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. in a second floor bedroom of the house. Mr. Bussell was with his older brother and a woman in the bedroom when he decided to retrieve a.357-caliber revolver with a six-inch barrel. While Mr. Bussell apparently was showing off the gun, it discharged.
"Everything looks like it was accidental,” Detective Gee said. “It does not appear that he had intentions of taking his own life.”
Detective Gee said the gun reportedly is owned by the older brother after he inherited it from their deceased grandfather.
Mr. Bussell was transported to Mercy Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at around 11 p.m.

That is very very sad and tragic.

Firearms must be respected, and someone should have taught him gun safety before a fire arm was turned over to them.

I will pray for the family.

Sad that someone had to die, but showing off loaded guns isn't something that normally happens in a house full of young children...

Apparently no one in that family had been taught about gun safety and the care and respect for guns, as you never point it at anyone - and always treat it as loaded.

Where I grew up, gun safety class was part of the school education program.   These types of gun accidents were unheard of.    Are there any safety programs in the local schools?

I don't think so, there was an ROTC program, I don't know if it is active or not.

You get kicked out of school now a days if you have any kind of weapon/gun...

It would be smart to include this and other common sense safety things in the curriculum however!

Seriously . . . I am sure he has family and friends who care deeply about him and are mourning this loss.  As this is a local bb . . . maybe using a tad bit of decorum could be considered.

Nicely stated Will.

This sounds like a repeat of what you stated when my brother was killed. Maybe you should be cleansed from your gene pool. That way we won't all be subject to your ignorant statements!

BB...sorry for the loss of your brother.....we lost one of our brothers to a drunk driver in 2006..... difficult to come to terms with under any circumstances......

as for Pax's comments...... it sickens me how people hide behind anonymity on the internet to post mean, hurtful, and despicable comments..... case in point.... the comments that were made on WXYZ website about the Monroe County woman accused of taking money from the Road Commission.....and comments made by people on the MEN site about the 500 pound woman from the Detroit area who fell and broke her hip...... I try hard to pray for these people that they are never in a position to have themselves or their family members judged so harshly by jerks such as themselves....

as for the Bussell family...... my sympathies for your loss.....God Bless

I'm quite certain every "victim" of his own stupidity will be sorely missed by somebody, somewhere: but that doesn't mean some of us won't find the ordeal mildly amusing or worthy of a Darwin Award.  Did someone alter the definitions of empathy and sympathy to require the absence of a smile??!

For the record, weasel, please don't think I have need for the "anonymity of the forum" to snigger at such things: I do it publicly, too. It's part of my charm.  :P

well Pax....can't say I agree with your "charms" but at least you have the ....... fortitude to be upfront about yourself..... it's the ones who hide behind anonymous code names that disgust me...... I don't mind a person being who they are as long as they are honest about it.....
