Thanks for that post BRD......I had heard of the incident way back when, but this was the first detailed story I read on it.  Good stuff.

1945 military plane crash in Monroe County

There are some other crash sites around the county from that same era.  Wasn't too long ago they recovered one of these trainers from Lake Erie or the Detroit River near Grosse Ile which may have made it just out of Monroe County.

Interesting gif of downtown monroe looking towards courthouse are on Washington -  morphing into modern pic...     City hall was there and a fire station during that pic from the 1800s

Interesting they picked Christy Brinkley -   I recall a poster of her hanging in my room years ago

I would have thought Gen. Custer may have been an honorable mention along with the founders of Laz-y-boy

LOL - Custer wasn't from Monroe.  His wife was.

No one outside of Monroe cares about Monroe Shock or La-Z-Boy.  Almost no one left in Monroe either.

Christy - she was hot.  I think good pick.

Just heard an interesting story about the location known as Munson Park...

It was supposed to be named after  Raymond and Elsie Knapp.

Goes back to 69 - when the City was expanding Custer airport's e/w runway option and the rest was available for the park and nature trails.

An option was extended on the land for 50K  and the city missed that option deadline by a 3-3 vote as the mayor was out of town (the one who set up the deal)     Mr. Knapp never enforced the  50k pay he was due and eventually made a deal to provide from his farm - the land now used for both the airport and what was later named Munson Park  -  spiting the previous mayor's promise to the Knapp Family.

I'd just like to go on record that a family that made a sacrafice of land for future generations benefits -   should get the recognition.    They have both since passed away - and knowing them both to be kind and gentle people they wouldn't want a fuss -  but I hope someday the City will revisit the name to what was promised vs someone who was a politician.

So, who was the 'Munson' the park was eventually named after?  The only Munsons I knew were the ones in La Salle that ran the excavating business.

He was a former Mayor...  seems that politicians like to have their names on things.
