Even dogs that aren't 'gunshy' tend to get upset from the visual impact of nearby fireworks.

Our pups tend to go in the bedroom (one on each side of the bed) when I'm out at the range making noise.  I presume they would do the same for fireworks as my noise is equal to or louder than (depending on load and caliber....)

I was listening to a PBS station on the drive home yesterday and they were saying that animal shelters busiest days are the 5th of July because of pets jumping fences and running away.

That's interesting...  I'll bet there is something to that.

Just saw an ad on TV for the 'Thundervest'...   just in time for the fireworks ;D ;D ;D

We've had 5 or 6 different breeds of dogs and I can't think of one that was scared or upset with fireworks. I think it has a lot to do with how you act when it was a puppy around loud noises.

I agree blue2...

We had the big red dog in Florida over the 4th when she was just several months old...

we were visiting my wife's mother and she had just moved.  We didn't realize that she was right next door to where they set off the countywide fireworks show.  Some of them were literally going off right over our head.  It didn't take me long to realize she didn't like all the noise so I took her back to Grandma's and held her in my lap and put a blanket over her head and held her ears covered.  She liked that 8) 8) 8)

If I had it to do over again I would have taken her for a ride in the truck while the show was going on.

The only other time I've been that close to the fireworks was one year at the Point Place Shoreland show one of the tubes tipped over and shot them right into the crowd >:( >:( >:(  That was NOT cool!!!

The old dog I've had since she was a puppy.  Loud noises do not bother me but she has always been terrified of loud noises.  I've had several abused dogs that were also terrified of loud noises but that was understandable.  Then there was my guard dog who was not afraid of loud noises but yell at me and he was on you in a split second.  I have found some dogs just don't like loud noises no matter that they don't bother me.

This was the first year for Sadie wanting no part of the noise, she is spooked slightly already.  Barlow got that way in his older years.

Not sure we acted any differently.....has always been lots of fireworks here every year and not sure anyone freaked out for either of them to see it.

Barlow was a mix lab, and Sadie is a full bred German Shepherd. Both spoiled as hell and living the life of a Socialist.
