When the county was originally formed it was much larger than it is today.  It also included part of southern Wayne county and all of Lenawee...  I was thinking I'd read that it also included part of Washtenaw but I can't find anything right now to verify that.

And it also included the narrow strip of land that is now in northern Lucas county and Toledo known as the 'Toledo Strip'.

Definitely lots of history here over the years!

I found the old map I was talking about but can't capture a picture of it.  I'll keep looking though.

Besides all of the above references I made it also included part of the present Jackson County.

Go here and scroll down to page 7:  http://www.co.monroe.mi.us/Dir_2017.pdf

Warning, this is a fairly large .pdf file.

Took a history of Michigan class in college.  The Toledo strip was a big fight known as The Toeldo War to see if it would be part of Michigan or Ohio.  The resolution was Ohio got Toledo and Michigan got the UP.  This was seen as a loss in the day but eventually was recognized as a win for Michigan.  A short read can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toledo_War.
