Title: I'd like to dedicate a song...
Post by: BigRedDog on September 13, 2008, 12:47:44 PM
make your dedications to your friends or enemies...

your true love....

your lost love(s)...

situations...

 or "just life in general"...

I will start with a dedication to the residents of Galveston TX who are suffering thru hurricane Ike this morning and probably for a long time in the future...

Galveston by Glen Campbell...   I'm sure some of the "youngsters" on here have never heard it...   A 1969 release that quickly became to many a "protest song" to the VietNam war...

in reality the song was written from the perspective of a Spanish American War soldier about his lady he left behind at home...

I really don't "remember" it that way either nosh...

I guess 'cause we weren't out there protesting...

This is where I found the reference...

and there were probably just as many that considered it a "tribute" to the soldiers of VietNam ;) ;) ;)

no problem with mine---he's used to other dogs being around. we have 5 and others that come to visit while their parents are away.  probably 5 or 6 different dogs a year.  he's pretty good at making them feel welcome--sniffs all the right places. lol

LOL BRD!

I was looking for the what song is stuck in your head topic but it isn't handy. Skateway melee thread was pretty interesting and Lordfly said Holy God Almighty lol. From last year tho.
Wonder is up w/ the Skateway.

Stroke 9 Nasty LittleThoughts
This just in where to begin
Grin and bear... it's bare and grim
adoration, titillation, I'm the victim now
Because she's figured me out

She lights my candle
She has a handle on me
It's goin well but I'm scared as hell
That she'll figure me out
She thinks it's sacred to be naked
but I don't care cuz she's had me there

You see she's figured me out
and I wanna shout at the top of my lungs
but oh my God if she hears me she'll come runnin in

These are my hands, these are my faults,
These are my plans, and these are my nastly little thoughts
I wrote them down for you to contemplate at a later date

Well the word is out what's it all about
It's doubtless shady, no shadow of doubt
Moderation, this sensation would be fabulous
aww but she's figured me out
she's in my shower for an hour
she just washin and wonderin
She's tryin to figure me out

well i wanna shout at the top of my lungs now
but oh my God if she hears me she'll come runnin in
well these are my hands, these are my faults,
these are my plans, and these are my nasty little thoughts
I wrote them down for you to contemplate

It's a little bit of something that i feel
oh man and i just can't deal
and other than this distance that has covered me
can't you see that you have smothered me

Well, you're there, just stay out there
Just when I was on to something else
That's when she figured me out

You see she's figured me out
and I wanna shout at the top of my lungs
but oh my God if she hears me she'll come runnin in

These are my hands, these are my faults,
These are my plans, and these are my nastly little thoughts
I wrote them down for you to contemplate at a later date

These are my hands, these are my faults,
These are my plans, and these are my nastly little thoughts
I wrote them down for you to contemplate at a later date

I love Puff the Magic Dragon. Always makes me choke up. My ExHubby bought my daughters a beautifully illustrated book that included the 'updated' version of the song. Puff finds a new friend and isn't doomed to live forever by himself in his cave. Much happier ending, especially for little ones. I will always remember my nephew (who is now a huge, manly, ruff & tuff guy) just boo-hooing at that song when he was a kid.

Wow!  What a GREAT step back in time there. . . .   Forgot how much I loved that song.

The entire song, every verse, is great.  And the part you cited is one of the best:

If I gave you everything that I owned and asked for nothing in return
Would you do the same for me as I would for you?
Or take me for a ride, and strip me of everything including my pride
But spirit is something that no one destroys

OMG.  What a great song!

Thanks for that one Fuzz.

I'd like to dedicate this song to me.  Played this piece repeatidly as my girls were growing up.....my eldest, as a child of about 10 at the time, told me that Charlie Daniels made this as my theme song.  Funny thing was it was a song that I'd often sing to her at night in the rocking chair.

Nice jazz start and fades into some good classic blues guitar and piano style.

Good song.  I've never heard it before.

Your little girls must've grown to a couple of cool ladies if that's what you lullabied them with.

 :)

If either were asked today they would tell you that they remember classic blues, country rock, lots of hippie music, and The Beatles......and Dad sang them all terribly. LOL

They still listen to the same stuff though, but mixed in with some of what they grew to like.  Both are huge Tori Amos fans......I went to one of her concerts with them ONCE, what a unique crowd that was.

Good song.  I've never heard it before.

I got pushed towards country rock when disco started.....just couldn't find the artistic talent in it; much like I feel towards rap.

There were a lot of good country rock artist moving into the blues area and were hidden generally on album sides opposite where their hits were.  Clapton was moving more towards blues, CDB was, Marshall Tucker, The Allman Brothers, Dickey Betts, and several others.

The Allman Brothers really brought country rock to my liking......Statesboro Blues, Come and Go Blues, and my favorite.....Whipping Post!

Fuzz, you DO come up with some of the best song memories for me.  NOW you bring up Allman Brothers.  One of my absolute favorite bands of the time. I went to so many concerts back then but never saw them.  My terrible loss.  :(

Whipping Post, great.

A another of theirs that ALWAYS got me up on the dancefloor:

The Allman Brothers Band - One Way Out - Eat A Peach (1972) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gg54zkr6IWs#ws)

The guitar in this song always sounded sad to me:

Melissa was a pretty song.

I did see them, twice in fact.....but I was smoking a bag a day back then....lol.

"Dreams" was another good one of theirs, they did a great version of "Stormy Monday", and a symbolic favorite of mine "Goin' Down Slow".   ;)

Great music.....and my goodness do I miss those days!

To the spirit of "Viva La Revolucion"......check out the young Niel Young in this video.

Profound lyrics......

There's something happening here
But what it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it's time we stop
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look - what's going down?

There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking' their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

It's time we stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look - what's going down?

What a field day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly saying, "hooray for our side"

It's time we stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look - what's going down?

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
Step out of line, the men come and take you away

We better stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look - what's going down?

We better stop
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look - what's going down?

We better stop
Now, what's that sound?
Everybody look - what's going down?

We better stop
Children, what's that sound?

Some real good soft, easy listening with some good instrumentals.  Many great recreational moments in my life listening to this song playing loudly in the background.

Our son is just plain outside all day long...  and sometimes way up in the air (a couple of hundred feet at times the past few weeks)!!!!

I've teased them both in the last week that I know why they make the 'big bucks' now ;) ;) ;)

Anyway...   I went looking for something for them...   and I found a version of 'Frosty the snow man' I've never heard...  by the Beach Boys of all groups  :o :o :o

I was reading the comments on the YouTube page for the post above and saw someone mentioned that Gene Autry had been the first artist to record and release the song.  Somewhere in the back of my mind I remember that fact...  and certainly remember hearing him sing it on the radio when I was very, very young!!!  Before we had a TV actually...  not that we were poor...  just that they weren't readily available yet!!!

Folks took to the streets, college campuses, DC, State Capitols,.....now, we are so divided as a country that a consensus to do it is no longer even possible.

Alvin Lee, of Ten Years After....who passed away this week.  One of my favorite tunes by him that the lyrics still ring the truth today.

Everywhere is freaks and hairies
Dykes and fairies, tell me where is sanity
Tax the rich, feed the poor
Till there are no rich no more

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

Population keeps on breeding
Nation bleeding, still more feeding economy
Life is funny, skies are sunny
Bees make honey, who needs money, monopoly

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

World pollution, there's no solution
Institution, electrocution
Just black and white, rich or poor
Them and us, stop the war

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

The video is a testament to the times, stirs a lot of feelings in my older bones, makes me wonder why the hell the youth of this country is not taking to the streets in protest, makes me think how "40 years after" still applies, and makes me yearn for my youth to lead the movement into staged protest....where the women were always very frisky.   ;)

First time I heard that song on The Bob and Tom Show I just cackled for nearly an hour.

True story......me and some buds hit the Illinois State Fair in DuQuoin, IL back in the late 70's and had front row seats to see Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.  We began toking down early in the show and Willie saw us and bent over the stage reaching for the doobie as we were passing it......it went up on stage, Willie hit it, Waylon hit it, Willie's sister hit it, and never saw where it went after the drummer hit it.  That cycle happened on the next one we did too.....great evening.

We ended up backstage after the show back by the buses and partied some more (never went in the bus) but this time it was with Willie's weed.......all I remember afterwards was going through the fair and hitting damn near every munchie stand on the way out to the car.

Nearly 20 years later Diamond Rio released this song.  Ironically it had numerous 'connections' to our relationship over the years...

I won't bore you all here although it might be great fodder for discussion at the Original Gravity Brewing in Milan 'someday'...

Anyway...  this has been one of 'our' songs the last 20 plus years now...

seems to work good for us...

I'd never heard this song before. This link didn't work for me earlier, so I looked it up and watched the "live" version (for a TV show) which I think is better because there's so much passion in his voice, but I like this one, too.

Dark, dark song. So much division, intolerance, and hatred... *sigh*.

Thanks for posting, tho. I'll be listening to it again.

That's because you were nothing but a twinkle in your papa's eye when it was written and released.  A very interesting side note is that the song was not intended to be released the way it was done.  Barry had the notes for the song written on a paper bag...  at one point he actually sings "ahhh" while he stops to decipher the notes.  They liked everything about it so the group had decided to get together and do a 'final' cut but somehow the original got leaked and it had 'gone viral' (we didn't have that term back then) in less than a week!

You have to think about the 'times' and the people from the mid 60s to the early 70s...

there were literally protests in the streets...

not just a bunch of people voicing their 'outrage' by pecking away at a keyboard on some internet forum...

Dark, dark song. So much division, intolerance, and hatred... *sigh*.

One of the reasons I just kind of chuckle at all the political 'outrage' in the last 20 years...

What's gone in the last couple of decades is just a whimper compared to what was happening at that time.  I was actually on the 'receiving end' of the protests a couple of different times as an active Army member.  They loved to 'rally' at the airports and challenge the troops...  of course the troops didn't have any choice in what they were doing (unless they bailed and moved to Canada)...  as always, it was the politicians that had us in a jam but the military personnel took the brunt of the protests...  I guess it made lots and lots of great press and so it did work it's way up the ladder.  Eventually some policies changed and I have no doubt it was directly attributable to the protests!

As much as everyone keeps proclaiming "the sky is falling" or "the end is near" (John Kopke for one)...

until we start seeing the protests in the street again I don't even think there is much of a chance at 'change'...

I have no idea if that will happen in my lifetime but I don't see anything really changing until it does.

The 'protesters' will need to have 'more blood in the game' than a few broken fingernails or sore fingers that we're seeing here on MT ;) ;) ;)

BM has actually updated this song fairly recently...  I'll see if I can find a Youtube of it but I have to do some 'real work' right now ;) ;) ;)

Here's another song that references the political times of the mid 60s and into the 70s...

but this is more on the 'outcome' of what happened way too many times....   the results of PTSD and no intervention along the way I'd guess.

It also happens to reference the song I posted last week in another thread about 'this is my rifle and this is my gun'...

if you're sensitive to the slightly graphic 'male anatomy' references then probably best to not listen ;) ;) ;)

I'd never heard this song before. This link didn't work for me earlier, so I looked it up and watched the "live" version (for a TV show) which I think is better because there's so much passion in his voice, but I like this one, too.

It's interesting how many different groups did a version of that song back in that timeframe...

protest then was way bigger than you can even imagine now...

it filled the newspapers and TV and even the local airports!

You can only imagine what it was like on all the radio airwaves :o :o :o

Go to YouTube and search the song and just see how many different groups it shows up under!

Barry Mcquire's original soared to #1 in the US and actually was pretty high across most of Western Europe too (I was there for over a year so I know how popular 'protest' songs were at the time)!!!

Here's his latest rendition Monique...  he did 'update' some of the lyrics though!

LOL eriemermaid...

that was my absolute all time favorite song from Woodstock...

I had to 'report for active duty' the week of Woodstock so I wasn't even able to listen or watch anything on it until weeks later...  but that song sure struck a cord with most of us recent 'inductees' (what a word)...

Somehow even though 99% of all the draftees ended up in 'nam I ended up in Germany and got out before they had a chance to revise my orders ;) ;) ;)

Wow. I really love that one, too!

Yes, like many of us 'old guys' from that time frame he's mellowed for sure...

gained a few pounds and lost some hair...

must all be part of the mellowing process ;D ;D ;D

Although I can still get into the suit I got married in...

it's a bit out of style but it still fits me pretty fair...

Worsted Wool...  the best suit I could afford at the time ;) ;) ;)

It was a very popular folk style song like Dylan's with a tone of how the younger generation felt back in the 60's and 70's.  Right up there with Two Hangmen by Masson Proffit.  Early FM stations played it a lot.

I did not know that Brian May was a Doctor of Astrophysics…

Brian May completed most of his PhD in Astrophysics in Jim Ring's group at Imperial College in 1970-4. Previously he had completed his degree in Physics at Imperial.  As far back as 1968 he had formed a band called 'Smile' with Tim Staffell and Roger Taylor, which after the departure of Tim Stafell and with the addition of Freddie Mercury and John Deacon, became 'Queen'. With the launch of the 'Queen II' album in 1974, Queen started to have an international success, and Brian abandoned his PhD.

…At the time Brian estimated it would take him two years to complete, but he in fact submitted his revised PhD on August 2nd 2007. As well as writing up the work he had done in 1970-4, observations of the kinematics of the zodiacal dust cloud made from the island of Tenerife, Brian also had to review the work on zodiacal dust during the intervening 33 years, which included the discovery of the zodiacal dust bands by the IRAS infrared astronomical satellite.  After a viva on Aug 23rd, the revised thesis was approved on Sept 24th 2007, almost exactly 37 years after it had been commenced.

brian may best solo ever (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYabmM-uxdE#)

Brian May built the “Red Special” guitar with the help of his father because he did not have the money to buy one.  He used an old fireplace that someone threw away, some motorcycle parts, a knife, a bicycle saddlebag bracket and a knitting needle.  He wound his own pickups out of phase n-s-n.

Ive been reading about how russia is putting in motion a plan to require customers of Gazprom, the largest energy exporter in Russia that supplies natural gas and oil to Europe, China, and Japan and others to pay their bills in euro's as opposed to dollars, in an effort to make the Euro the reserve currency. They are doing this in " retaliation " for Obama putting sanctions on Russia over Ukraine. And I think to over the US role in the Balkans which destroyed Serbia. Putin is doing the same thing in Ukraine America did in Serbia / Croatia. Seems it was ok for us but not for Russia.

anyway, the potential of what Russia is trying to do through the currency situation brought a certain tune to mind:

Don McLean- American Pie (with Lyrics) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAsV5-Hv-7U#)

I'm confused Epitaph...

how does 'anyone' take a very popular song written and performed in honor of the life and death of Buddy Holly...

an all time great American musician...

and somehow 'twist' it into something supposedly about a very modern international political situation?

I'll give you Kudos for posting the song...   an all time favorite of mine as a GI by the way.

It was released late in the fall of 71 while I was in AIT at Ft. McClellan, AL!

There was a much, much more unpopular political 'unrest' situation at home here in our country at the time and no one (at least that I ever heard of) even thought of attempting to 'twist' the lyrics into something for political gain in our own situation...

and to consider it now is still a travesty in my music luvin' opinion :o :o :o

I do find it 'odd' that someone with a user name of Epitaph (meaning:  a phrase or statement written in memory of a person who has died, esp. as an inscription on a tombstone) would attempt to malign the name and memory of one of our greatest performers of days gone by.

For those unaware of the 'true meaning' of Don McLean's tribute it was for and about the life and death of the legend 'Buddy Holly'!!!

Here's some reading for you and anyone else that has ever tried to manipulate the meaning of this American 'Classic'...

If you have trouble with reading comprehension here's a YouTube for you:

Epitaph...   as much as I support your 'freedom of speech' please take your opinions to the politics board...  I'm sure it will be much better received over there...   this is just not the 'right' place for this type of a post >:( >:( >:(

Tunes and songs can have different meanings to different people of different generations. Depends on the context of a person's thoughts when they hear a certain tune as to what, if anything they relate it to. I happened to hear American Pie on the radio just before the story regarding the Russia / Dollar info and it made me think of how the America would be affected if something like that were to occur, and thought I would share the context.

I'm sure the tunes Painted Black, Fortunate Son, and No Satisfaction bring to mind certain thoughts or memories to others as well. For you to be offended because I associated american Pie with a current political or world situation and presented that as to why I was thinking about the song seems a little petty. Ill try not to chew bbl gum or burp to loud lest I offend in the future.

If I have anything "political" or otherwise to share, I will do so in the proper forum so as not to get anyone's ire in a bundle.

"Epitaph" is a statement regarding someone or something who has died or otherwise passed on. My use it is personal; re: my business.

I remember when this first came out back in the early 60s...

I've kind of experienced some of this the last several weeks myself.  Although my wife went with me on our camping trips to southern Illinois and to Northern Michigan she stayed home while I made a 'quick trip' to Florida.  I checked the trip odometer last night and I drove 3636 miles in addition to all the work I did.

Anyway, I'll throw this one out to all the individuals that put aside their nice comfortable life here at home to travel to either Texas or Florida to 'give a hand' when and where it was needed.

I encountered electric linemen (they were very visible), ambulance crews, firefighters, regular military (mostly Army) and some National Guard troops.  I know there were Red Cross workers helping out although I didn't actually encounter any.  Fortunately I had taken everything with me I needed.

LOL...

some good ones on there.  I'll file that list away for now...

maybe the next salvo can come from there.

I never have read that much of TPP's posts since most are on the politics board...   the sports posts have been rather spot on though!

But, he (she?) needs to be a little more 'informed' about what they're posting when they venture outside their 'safety' zone.

Everyone is 'entitled' to their 'opinion' on what personal info should and shouldn't be available to the public and sometimes it is a 'fine' line...   but I know the laws and regulations and keep up with (continuing education required every year) them and work and live by them.

One of the biggest developments in recent years has been with what can i legally photograph on someone's personal property (even less restrictions for a business)?  The general guideline was if I can see it from a public property (or an accommodating neighbor) then the owner can expect no right to privacy (not being photographed).  Then when the drones all became readily available to anyone with $49 it raised some new issues.  Eventually the drones pretty much won out although there are still a few restrictions still in the development stage.

Gotta love modern technology ;) ;) ;)
