Is there a reason for the extremely slow response time tonight? Just curious....
Thanks
-
We hosted our first ever Monroe News Q & A live chat tonight. We set the page up on our MonroeTalks.com server. We didn't expect this first one to be so popular, but we've been hit with a huge surge of traffic. As you can tell, it's slowed the site down to a crawl. The chat should be ending soon, which should speed things back up.
We're already working on repairing this, as we plan to do many more of these live Q & A chats in the future. Thanks for the feedback.
-
Why not just have a live chat box all the time? It helps you get to know the other members better.
-
Is there a talk going on now? Why is it running so slow this morning?
-
Monroe News :
Congratulations and excellent work on your first Live Chat Q&A last night.
I understand that the initial use of this feature slowed MT down. At the same time, it was great to read the MEN taking a quick response in addressing this issue.
Perhaps MEN may consider having the click in and server use be held on the MEN newspaper online instead of on MT and its server.
While there has been a suggestion for MEN to consider having a constant chat box, I appreciate and understand the difference between that offering and the Live Chat feature the MEN just implemented.
For example, MEN's Live Chat Q&A is similar to MLive's use of this type of community interactive component.
Link to a recent MLive Live Chat from February 12th http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2009/02/foren_chat.html (http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2009/02/foren_chat.html)
While a Live Chat box may offer some MT members an avenue to hold conversations that don't necessarily fit as posts on the forum, I recommend that it be separate from the Live Chat Q&A due to the divergent focus and use of each item.
Continuing, I recommend that best practices be utilized in a Live Chat Box review so that MEN's business and community standards are met and maintained.
In that manner, a Live Chat box would be an asset to and not a detraction from MEN.

I can understand being overloaded last night with the new chat thing. But MT seems down more than up for the past couple of weeks. I am seriously getting tired of typing posts and have them go off into oblivion because the site shut down AGAIN. When are you going to get it fixed?
-
Oh come on, the hamsters running the server have to rest every once in a while. :D

This is just as frustrating for us. We've been working on the slow issues all day, it seems there might be an issue with the new theme. I'll be posting a new thread as we try some tests to narrow down the issues. We're not giving up on this.. bear with us!!
-
Thank God! I thought I made it barf. The hamster was very tasty though. ;)

I really liked the check box on the right side of the page to "mark this as read." Is it going to be brought back?

I'm running into issues with the blog pages too. I've notified IT.
-
Anybody else notice how slow the site has been?
Not real slow but noticeably.
I guess they're vigorously blocking someone and it's sucking the power out of the system.

Slooooow
I thought maybe it was the cooler weather...
I also figured they were looking for my smilies since they are missing again...
-
I figured it was just our internet, every site seems to be slow for me today. We're looking into this. Smiley's are working for me. There must be an overall issue on why they go away and come back however, we'll poke around for an answer on that one too.
-
Minor site glitch this morning folks. I've noticed the site has been running a bit slow, and this morning it finally must have had enough, and decided to take a nap. We have had a considerably large traffic surge over the last few days, which could have added to the lags of the site. We're running some repairs to databases, which should and I believe already has sped up the site considerably. Thanks for your patience!
-
Slooooow
The site is acting slow and goofy....
-
Not seeing it on this end, Fry. Not now anyway.
-
I have had several times where it gave me a 500 internal error during the last week or two.
-
I've experienced slowness on the site, tried to perform a couple of searches that wouldn't "go", and got the 500 error several times in the last ~4 days.
-
Thanks everyone. We did some minor repairs to the forum based on your comments, but obviously it was a bigger issue. Sometimes the database the software runs on gets overloaded and crashes, which, all of these errors you were experiencing must have been a sign! We've completely repaired the databases and will be doing some more preventative maintenance today to speed the site up. Keep us posted if you're seeing more errors, we'll try to squash them all today. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Glad to hear what's going on...
I was posting in What's for dinner when my wife called me that iit was time to eat...
When I came back to finish the post the site was down...
I thought maybe it didn't like what I had for dinner :-\ :-\ :-\

Last night was the first time I've had any pronblem in a looooong time.

Good to know I wasn't the only one getting an error. We just got the new computer hooked up and thought it was that already. Our other one hasn't died yet so we have 2 that are working. It should be interesting.

Found some issues that could of been slowing the database down, it's been restarted and repaired. Hopefully that fixes it! Keep us posted if you're still getting errors.

erg! I hate it when I type out a post and the forum crashes it and it is gone. Then I have to redo the post and I don't remember what I did for the first one, and the second is never as good as the first was.

Same message here after trying several attempts to post.

Taking a looooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggg time when I hit refresh today... or switch pages or select a topic...
and everything else I have open seems ok...
I have a new laptop with almost 4000 mb of RAM and it tends to make everything pretty fast...
except MT is getting slower and slower for me :-\ :-\ :-\

@#$%#^#% I just typed out a longer post. When I clicked reply the stinking thing asked me to log in. I am always logged in. I was logged in to frikking reply to the post and I got booted between typing the reply and posing it.
I am not happy!
-
If you had clicked the <back> button, you may have been able to copy and paste your post.
-

Couldn't it took me to start new topic.
-
Actually, that is the third time in the last few weeks I have lost posts I wrote. This was the first to log me out though.
-
I've tried the back button during those times the site starts acting goofy....everything I typed was gone.
I've learned to highlight everything and select copy before I hit the post button....especially if it's a long reply....it's cheap insurance.
That way, if I have a take a second shot at it, all I have to do is paste.

I remember a time when I had to do that EVERY post and it was really annoying. It was working good for a long time though, and now it seems the same stinking problem ( a little different in how it happens) is back.

I just got a 404 too

I'm a little worried about the last line:
mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited
Looks like my posts are having to pass through the mods, which requires authorization and my bandwidth is limited.
Maybe my interpretation is off but that's what it looks like to me. ???
-
Thanks for the heads up, we're on it. Since this has been a reoccurring issue, we're going to spend some time working on it but will have the site back functioning as it should soon. Thanks.

Mine says the same, Fry.
I think it's a conspiracy!

I've had the same problem a few times tonight too.

MG it usually happens when the server is over loaded from what I remember before. Seems to be a lot of people on tonight.
-
I think it's the server being overloaded a bit tonight with that kidnapping/murder thing.

Working on a fix now!
-
Quite a bit of traffic pouring in tonight, hang in there we're working on speeding the site up now..
-
Sorry for the brief outage tonight folks. We're going to attempt some preventative maintenance tomorrow morning, and will give everyone a heads up if the site needs to come down for any length of time. Thanks for your patience!

Can you fix the links to the stories off the feeds to where the entire story can be read while you are at it?
-
Ha! I'm working on it.. :)

Sorry, couldn't resist. ;)

seems to be dying....
-
....sure seems to be, Duck. Too bad, used to have a lot of fun here, and have made some good friends.
-
seems to be dying....
Duck I hope you mean that as a technical problem. Not how you feel about the forum. I enjoy MT more & More all the time and I know hubby does also. I also have found some very nice people here. I find it to be as much or more fun as when I first joined.
-
I think it may be a little naive to think that this forum is not dying, or at least considerably dropping off in participation. Few new members joining, and not enough to offset the number of long time members not coming in any longer.
Check out the forum stats link at the bottom of the home page, and look at the forum history by year. The data is right there that shows the decline in posters, new members, topics, right on down the line.
It ain't what it used to be....for sure.
-
I don't know about anyone else but this time of year is quite busy. Politics are over for the most part so that part might die down a little. As far as being naive I don't think so. I do enjoy the peace & quiet we have had here recently.
-
Naive maybe was a strong word, no personal slam intended. The stats show the facts however. The most active threads have little substance like what it used to be on here. Membership is declining, and the number of posts as well....regardless of the season.
-
Another factor is too many people are using the PM system.
The "unfiltered" site gains whenever MT crashes.
I would imagine the frustration of those outages as well as many other factors may drive people away until the bugs are worked out.
Of course there could be an unofficial campaign going on to boycott MT until the polar opposites are removed.
Or it could be people have better things to do.
There does seem to be rhythm to the participation.
Guess it depends upon the news of the day....which lately seems to be teasers from the MEN.
-

I did mean technical. It was taking a very long time to load pages, and I lost a post. Last I tried before I made that comment I couldn't even load the entire home page. Seems to be better now.
-
Well a few people leaving doesn't stop me from posting. I will continue to enjoy my time here even though it is a busier time for me. I hope others do as well. I know that others have also mentioned that it is much more peaceful here. I personally don't get why people enjoy sitting back watching others attack but it's not my cup of tea.
-
I have been way to busy lately to be on here much . . . but I like the quiet days and quiet nights. I love reading what thoughts others have and I love to talk about my
retirement. I mean what is going on with my day. ;)
-

Good because you would be one missed duck, by me. ;)
-
Fuzz makes a good point. Not too many new, and former poster's dropping. However, I think that is misleading to a degree. Look at "guests" and how many reads a topic gets. Non participants are still very high. Page hits really haven't changed much.
-
Good because you would be one missed duck, by me. ;)
Sometimes I get a bit disgusted at the attacking. Lately has been more of personal than at others. Some topics I just like to read and not post on. I guess some others do that too.
I usually read "what are you thinking... " and "where is it" (or whatever it is called) and BRD's wildlife pics. I rarely post in them though.
My favorite category is "Hobbies" I have even read a lot of the very old posts in that topic. I didn't think it would be right to post in those old ones though. I think TOS doesn't like that.
-
Choff....I am not trying to agitate you, and am not referring to the recent people who you enjoy not being here anymore. Not my point, not sure why you are trying to make it one! I'm going back two years, even a year ago when there were many more posters and new topics. My guess is that we now have maybe 20 to 25 regular active posters....used to be way more than that. Fry is right about there being a rhythm, and it seems to be dependent on current news items.
-

Not trying to make it a point. Just voicing MHO.
-
I see Normal Joe is still the top topic starter and he's been quiet for some time now.
He used to make every utterance into a fresh topic.
I try to find existing topics to add to.
Don't let the membership numbers fool you.....people created lots of spare identities back in the day.....many that haven't been used at all.
Saw a MRS Kopke and a FRY....for the record, FrenchFry is my only identity on here.
The top topic in participation seems to be the games.....I think a minority built those numbers up....not something I care to waste my time on.

No comment......to either of you! ;)
-
I noticed that too. And I am not anywhere. Not that I want it, but I am a loudmouth making a lot of posts.
-
Activity seems down a little, but people are out bustling about getting things ready for Thanksgiving, the weather has been good for outdoor projects and all sorts of stuff. It'll pick back up with the first snow and people being inside. I feel like people are just "feathering the nest" for winter.
I am never happy when traffic is up because of a tragedy.

So true on all accounts. I have been busy working on finishing my Christmas shopping. Also hubby works a different shift now which is giving us so much more time to spend together so we have been going out more and staying at home less. I have been cooking much less also which has been nice actually.
-
I really don't feel the forum is dying. And, if slow . . . then so be it.
It's like meeting for dinner with extended family members every night. WHAT on earth is new to discuss that often?
AND, not to mention those "family members" who don't like each other. 8* Not much fodder for quality discussions when insults and tempers flare.
I think it's the "everyday" part of this forum that may a culprit if things appear to be slowing.
Some posters just, as was suggested, read along and not necessarily have to voice every breath and thought that passes through their heads. No big deal.
No, I don't think it's dying. It's most definitely changing . . . . and sometimes change is good. I think it's changed a couple/few different times already over the years.
I'm like eriemermaid. My time is very limited right now to be on MT throughout the day. I might check in on weekends or evenings. And, as for the # of posts, I don't come close to the #s that others post here. That's OK too. Not insinuating anything. Just saying my participation is not as much as others, but just as valid.
I understand how many people consider MT to be a major outlet for "friendships" in their lives and that's fine. But it is really just a public forum. Ideas come and go.
I think the forum is doing exactly what it was designed to do; give a place to voice opinions & conversation for locals and anyone else who chooses to participate.
Is it different now? Yes, in some ways. Is that a bad thing? Not to me. :)
-
OK, maybe dying was a poor word to use. Different, most certainly. I just happened to enjoy it more when there was more than the 20 to 25 active posters than there is nowadays. Great conversations that exceeded 4 to 5 word responses to another 4 to 5 word statement. I still find the forum entertaining, just not as enlightening as the first year or so that I was on here. IMO.
-
Thought maybe it was just my connection, but it is not. Site seems slower than normal today.
-
180 guests tonight and very slow. What's up?
180 is really high.

Noticed MT was down around primetime yesterday....viewed as a guest this morning and a pop-up ad appeared.....the site has been slow lately.....like a built-in delay.
-
OMG!! It's so slow that I had time to raid the fridge for a drink and the page still didn't change to whatever I clicked when I left.
I opened another browser and saw MT doesn't even appear on the main news page.
Yesterday the whole site was down for a time around noon or so.
And I sent emails to the two people listed as web admins.
Oh well...you guys must know what you're doing. 8* :D
-
The site seems to be running slow today...
and when it's running slow it seems like it quite often crashes soon thereafter :-\ :-\ :-\
I wonder if it has something to do with the 31 Baidu spiders that are crawling around ??? ??? ???
And just why does one search engine need 31 spiders anyway?
-
OMG! IS IT JUST MY COMPUTER, OR IS THIS SITE MOVING LIKE A SLUG THIS WEEK?!?!?!?
A few days ago, I got the message that the "Page had crashed", and has been slower than slow ever since.
Does anyone know what the problem is?
-
Local interference created by that GD tackyass Appalachian wine bottle tree.
-
I have had to do an end around and come in through the monroenews.com site. Even then I have to click on a specific thread to get in, then back out to the category menu.
If I try to come in the front door I get a "404"! Nifty slogan... really I just made it up.
-
It has been loading slower that in the past...
I've also noticed an increasing number of failed page loads...
The sites falling apart...:P
-
I use Buckeye cable and have no problems loading. Although I have to load it twice because and ad pops up first and I have to hit it again.
-
I use Charter for my desktop and my tablet and part of the time on the wifi for my phone... all slow.... and I use Verizon 4G on my phone if I'm away from home... still slow... although not as slow as it was last week before it crashed a couple of times ??? ??? ???
-
Hum..i have verizon but hardly ever see 4G or even 3G in Temprrance but access is not bad on the phone. Haven't noticed any change.
-
Still slow to refresh......just like it usually does before another crash.
-
We have had some database issues the last couple of days. Keep us posted if you continue experiencing slowness. We'll get it resolved!
-
As long as CollegeKid continues to post, we will experience slowness.
-
Most of the time the response seems to be okay, normal. This morning at times it was very unresponsive hooked up on high speed cable.
-
The site is very, very slow today
-
Is anyone else having problems with the site today? page won't load or taking forever?
-
Yes I did, Maverick. Could not connect at all, so I sent an email to Rob at MEN. Immediately got a "thanks for the heads up, is being fixed now" and here we are back up and hopefully running smoothly again.
-
Hopefully it's faster now! We'll keep an eye on it. Thanks everyone.
-

Big thanks to you!
-
Seems to be working a lot faster this morning...
I finally just gave up on it yesterday 8* 8* 8*
-
Seemed to be running real slow about 4:30 am... maybe it was just a little groggy yet ??? ??? ???
-
The board is running r-e-a-l-l-y s--l--o--w for me today. Sometimes it won't even load, just keeps a spinnin' round and round. :o
-
Same here.....I just thought the spinning was from too much Scotch last night.
-
Same here.....I just thought the spinning was from too much Scotch last night.
Well if it's the Scotch, then I must have had a LOT since I don't even remember it. :)
-
Seems to be taking an extra long time to load a page, especially after I post something. I'm the only member online but there are 30 'lurkers' and 2 spiders so certainly not an extra high number of users.

Same here, BRD. It has been happening off-and-on here since on posted above on the 1st. Seemed OK when I switched to post reply this time---now to try "send"

It's been fine a few times this morning but it's generally slow...
I feel the same way myself sometimes though 8* 8* 8*
-
Hopefully the update we did will resolve some of the slowness problems. We're keeping a close eye on it. Post if you notice more slowness, or anything else goofy, like this quick reply box that seems to extend off the right of the page for miles and miles! :)
-
Seems better than it was this morning although not as fast as it has been in earlier days!
Anything really new on the update or all behind the scenes improvements?
-
The update was more or less security updates. We wanted to get the site updated to rule it out. The site just loaded pretty slow for me, so I'm not sure the update did anything. We'll get back to our tests Thursday morning.

While it's been terrible of late...the site is flying right now. :)

I agree... flying ;) ;) ;)
-
Still at a standstill.
I just did a post, and after I hit post, it never did anything. Waited 10 minutes.
I finally just deleted my raw working post, and went back to subject page and there it was.
-
There is something going on with the site. Usually it's ok but there are times i get "waiting for site to respond. And I usually get a popup the first time in that I have to kill off then reload or it never opens.
-
Slower than cold molasses here today >:( :-X
-
To add, I usually get right into Monroenews.com but the forum is another situation as well as bedfordnow forum

IMO the admins do a fair job of running this site. I think the problem is with the host server. If they can't provide the service they promise, then it is time to find one that will. Most of the issues over the last several months are server related. Admin, spell check is not working.
