Post by: Aunt Lisa on June 27, 2010, 11:14:54 AM

Does anyone know if there is a u-pick strawberry field around Monroe? I miss the real favor of strawberries :)

Ooooo, this would be a fun thing to do with the kids. (Always on the lookout for ways to wear them out! lol) And then I could make some freezer jam!

Thanks honey, I haven't picked in years, but now my kids are old enough to do the bending. LOL I wonder if they are open yet.

I'm not sure, Lisa.....I know down in the St. Louis area that they are done shortly after Memorial Day.  I'm sure we are at least 3 weeks behind them, so it should be close.

You're almost too late for strawberries Aunt Lisa...

Also in Ida...

Whittaker's Berry Farm...   6724 Todd Road...   phone first to check on picking conditions...

734-269-6612

The summer edition of the Monroe Magazine has a very nice photo article on their operation.

Marilyn is the daughter of the owners of the former Rauch's Berry Farm in LaSalle so she kind of grew up in the business...   both her and hubby are great people!!!

since Flanders isn't around I'll even do a map 8* 8* 8*

UGH!!!! Thanks BRD and Fuzz. One day I'm going to get my $h!# together and try doing some planting myself. First I'll need to read a book about it, because I'd be planting way to late. LOL

Well Aunt Lisa you gave me an idea to go pick some berries today. So I called Whittaker's and they are done with berries but Parran's isn't You can still pick till 5 today and they are open during the week from 9-7. Lady I spoke to  said berries are getting small though.

LOL Sorry,
I cheated I bought my berries at Meijers. I usually pick mine every year though. I didn't this year yet. Hubby wants us to to go to the movies today so I am not sure I will pick them today either.

Well someone is on the ball today, good job :) maybe I should wait until Monday. If they are small, wouldn't they grow more with 2 days of rain we are excepting? I should know more about this stuff, my grandfather was a farmer, but I was too little then.

The drive in opens later.....you still have time to bend over and pick some berries.  Could loosen you up a bit for the drive in.   ;)

Just spent a couple days going back & forth to Tecumseh & saw a few roadside stands & a few houses between Dundee & Tecumseh that had veggies or berries out front for sale.

I bought some cherries at the Tecumseh farmers market on Saturday. they were pretty good.  :)

Its kind of a far drive for some fruit or veggies but sometimes its worth it.  :)

My wife is off on vacation this week so we went strawberry picking at Whittaker's in Ida yesterday!  The berries were plentiful and deelicious (I'm having some on my cereal while I type...  may post that picture later) ;) ;) ;)

There were lots of people there but the one downside with all the rain from Monday was there was plenty of mud too.  Probably best to call ahead before you drive out there...

The two of us picked these in less than a half hour 8) 8) 8)

We were going to go pick some more at Whittaker's yesterday but they were closed due to the high demand.
They said they should be open Monday if they don't get too much mud from the rain this weekend!

We went out and picked several quarts yesterday morning.  I believe they're even better this year than last.  Whittakers had a real muddy mess out there last year with the long stretch of rain we were having at the time but they have upgraded their driveway and the drainage in the fields and it all looked as dry as you'd expect in the middle of a strawberry field.  We even saw the photographer from the Monroe News out there taking pictures and they're on the front page of the paper this morning!

Ours are 'motoring' along just fine.  Gonna be a big crop this year.  Easy to grow, spread like the weeds they are...

I've heard some discussion before about strawberries being a weed.

We have a few patches of wild strawberries back in the woods.  Some years they have heavy berries and some years hardly any.  I don't do anything to maintain them except mow the taller brush back away from them in the spring.

We went to Whittaker's and picked this morning.  They sent us to pick in the 'Honeyeye' patch...  the berries were absolutely perfect.
