Title: What are you reading right now?
Post by: ducksoup on November 23, 2010, 09:02:32 PM
I thought it might be nice to share what everyone is reading.

I just read "The Way of Kings" by Brandon Sanderson.  He wrote the final "Wheel of Time" book (I didn't read that)  I have read other books by him and he is good.

Also read "Lord of the Changing Winds" by Rachel Neumeier.  Not so good.

Also read 5 of the books in the series of "Repairman Jack" by F. Paul Wilson.  Fantastic stories.

Reading the "Wizard in Rhyme" series by Christopher Stasheff.  I really like them.  Very interesting idea, but some don't like the religious aspects in them.  But, to me it is some fun light reading.

That's it for about the last ten days.  Going to the library tomorrow though.

If you go to the Google home page, it will have a choice of "more" on the top line.  Click on that and then books.  There are bunches of books on line.  Some are only previews, but there are hundreds of books that are complete editions.   :D

Right now I'm reading The Centurion's Wife, by Davis Bunn.

I'm between novels at the moment. Not sure what I'm gonna pick up next. I've been working my way down the 100 greatest novels of the century list. But I'm thinking I might pick up something more current next. Maybe The Atlantis Code, I here it's pretty good.

"A Dawn like Thunder, The True Story of Torpedo Squadron Eight"

Torpedo Squadron 8 was the TBD Devastator squadron that made the initial attack on the Japanese carriers at Midway. All of them were shot down, only one pilot survived. One interesting tidbit is that one of them, Ozzie Gaynier, was born and raised here in Monroe.

I must read more than most...

Right now it's "Bloodlands: Europe between Hitler and Stalin". It's an excellent book, though not for the faint of heart, since it discusses in detail the mass killings, the famines, and deportations that affected millions of people in Eastern Europe and Ukraine in the 1930's and during WW2.

For anyone who has seen the movie about the young Hannibal Lecter and how he came to be the character portrayed in "Silence of the Lambs" and the movies that spun off from it, this book is proof that such things really did happen.

Harvest of Sorrow, an out of print (gotta love used book sellers on Amazon) book about the forced collectivization of peasant farmers in Ukraine in 1932-33 that resulted in a massive famine that killed upwards of 9 million people. A good read about the evils of Stalinist socialism.

In Ukrainian the term for this event is Holodnor. It's no less of a holocaust than what the nazis perpetrated a decade later, yet hardly anyone knows it happened.

I'm reading Guillermo Del Toro / Chuck Hogan's vampire zombie book The Strain.  I'm kind of disappointed.

I need to find a good apocalyptic thriller.  After reading Swan Song by my new favorite author Robert McCammon, I'm having a hard time finding something that even comes close.

Sounds like a good read.   Right now I am reading life insurance policies and trying to figure out how to collect some money.  It is amazing to me how much information they want.  I have to find out how to get my mother in laws death certificate . .  .she died over 10 years ago.  The policy payments my husband had been paying say right on the address line:  mother's name (deceased)
                                                                                               husband's name
                                                                                               our address

I wonder why they don't know she is deceased???    :-\

A couple of options erie...

you need to contact the county clerk where she died or in some cases the state health department.

Lots of the state health department documents are available online and you can locate and order them fairly easy.  It can be a little harder dealing with the county clerks in some cases...

When you order the copy make sure you get a certified one (the embossed seal) for the life insurance company.

I recently read two series of novels by Jim Butcher.  Codex Alera, and the Dresden files.  I really liked the Codex Alera ones but there was only 4, and the Dresden Files were available when I was empty of reads, so I picked up the first.  Then quickly gobbled up the other 12 or so.  They are surprisingly very good.

Currently reading one by R.A. Salvatore -  the second of the Highwayman.  Awesome character.

Also reading Diane Duane "So you want to be a Wizard" series which is young reader but fun.  Also read the first of the Charlie Bone series for kids that was fun if not a bit lacking in writing skill.

I'm reading The Lion's Game by Nelson DeMille,

Paperback...    still my preferred method although I've debated on getting a Kindle or e-reader.   Had a textbook on my mini-laptop and didn't really like it as I couldn't flip back and forth to research the various subjects like I would in a traditional one.

The Stand is close but I doubt you find one as good as Swan Song. Outstanding book.
They Live by the same author is excellent too.

If you want creepy read Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons.

I enjoy reading stories from and and about the Civil War - very interesting time in our history.

I just finished The Mothman Profphecies.
Now I'm reading House of Evil. Originally titled when it was first published, "The Indiana Torture Slaying". Based on a true crime.

I am reading the Anita Blake series. Written by Laurell K Hamilton. If you are a fan of the supernatural being series they are a good read. A little graphic nothing that you would want your kids to read. Definitely for MA.

It's "What are you READING," not "what did you WRITE?"

If Fuzz ever had a pseudonym, Dick Craze would be a good choice. ;)

I could never get into The Hobbit.  Tolken's style isn't really my thing.  I did read the first book of the Wheel of Time series, but that has a Tolken-esque style so I didn't go beyond the first book.

I just finished up Snuff by Chuck Palanhiuk.  It's a good quick read and really demented.  Then again, all of his stuff is.  I'm debating on whether or not I want to start Oryx and Crake by Atwood.  I may need another easy read before I get into that.

my son made me read the Wheel of Time series...finding it much easier on audio.... also, my son really likes Palanahiuk as well...he keeps trying to get me to read those....Forsythia, you and my son seem to share a taste in books...he just started a new trilogy that he really seems to like....I'll try to remember to ask him about them.... and I do agree Baggins....could read Tolkien...over and over and over and over.....well, actually, I do..... :) ....I read from an entertainment point of view as well as a teacher's point of view... can't get enough of some books

some books to try..... Confederacy of Dunces; Out of the Night that Covers Me; God's Little Acre(kind of graphic); anything by William Gay; always willing to read the Iliad or the Odyssey; these are just some books that I have enjoyed over the years....taking into account not everyone's taste is the same .....most of these are southern literature of one sort or another...... but good books in my opinion

I'm a big fan of historical novels, and Ken Follett has been my favorite author in that genre since The Pillars of the Earth (http://www.ken-follett.com/bibliography/the_pillars_of_the_earth.html)<- link in 1989.
Quote
In a time of civil war, famine, religious strife and war, there rises a magnificent Cathedral in Kingsbridge. Against this backdrop, lives entwine: Tom, the master builder, Aliena, the noblewoman, Philip, the prior of Kingsbridge, Jack, the artist in stone and Ellen, the woman from the forest who casts a curse. At once, this is a sensuous and enduring love story and an epic that shines with the fierce spirit of a passionate age...

That book, and it's 2008 sequel, World Without End (http://www.ken-follett.com/bibliography/world_without_end.html) have since been made into mini-series but I've seen neither as of yet.

Yeah, but that rebate is for store credit only, not actual cash. It's fine if you shop there a lot, bit of a gimmick if you don't.
