My wife and I walked and half crawled probably the best part of a half mile today through what has always been great mushroom spots and not a thing.  I'm thinking we just haven't had enough heat when we had enough water this year.  Maybe we're just too anxious :o :o :o

I have had no luck at all this year, none last year and barely nothing the year before that.  I really am not brave enough to go on property if I don't know who it belongs to.  I know this is a stretch but does anyone know of any public areas that people have found any?  I have tried numerous times at Munson and got nothing.

We were busy out working in our garden, yard and even the woods yesterday.  I was mowing some of the walking trails that had been 'too wet' before now and decided to take a look to see if I could stumble onto a morel or two...   I darned near tripped over one of them.  I believe these are by far the biggest morels we've ever found here on our own place.  They were deeeeeelicious too :P :P :P

I found these 3 first...   they're bigger than they look in the picture.  My wife took the picture while I was outside and she was getting them ready for the fry pan.

(http://i905.photobucket.com/albums/ac260/bigreddog1/P5190641_zpsd447a07c.jpg) (http://s905.photobucket.com/user/bigreddog1/media/P5190641_zpsd447a07c.jpg.html)

Once she had those soaking she wanted to go back out and look for some too.  We walked a good hour and then finally went back to our 'old faithful' morel patch and I found this one within 3 feet of where I found the very first one:

(http://i905.photobucket.com/albums/ac260/bigreddog1/P5190643_zpsaa28e3d2.jpg) (http://s905.photobucket.com/user/bigreddog1/media/P5190643_zpsaa28e3d2.jpg.html)

I wish there was a way to bottle that aroma and sell it...

Just think...

'Morels in butter' air freshener 8) 8) 8)

Now you can idea of how big the small ones were ;) ;) ;)

My nephew has been finding them for the last two weeks. First they were the small white and grays but now he's finding the orange ones. Some are the size of tennis balls. He says look under old dead elm trees or apple orchards. He found 40 one time but lately it's been 6 or 7 at a time. Today was a good humid day they should be up tomorrow with the rain tonight.

We found these four under....

drum roll please.....

one of our old apple trees :) :) :)

It's really old and the trunk is hollow and starting to split open the whole length.  Over the winter the top fell out of it so not sure how much longer it will last.  I hope there will be enough of whatever is in the ground for it to keep producing morels as long as I want to keep looking for them.

Nice, all I find in my yard is grass, grass, and grass! :(

But on the other hand we've found them literally out in the middle of our lawn....  on a sand ridge.  I've always wondered if maybe there had been an old apple tree there since we do have several in our yard near there.

I've been out a few times checking our 'prime' spot...

the apple tree that's been there since we moved here finally blew over this winter...

it was all hollow and I'm surprised it has lasted as long as it has anyway.

I'm not sure if maybe I should plant another apple tree there or just let it go...

I've seen a few vehicles parked along the roads in presumed good areas so I think people are out and 'on the hunt'...

Looks like things are better on the west side of the state:

Just eat them....  I like 'em sauteed in butter in a fry pan until slightly brown.

I made a big mistake picking all of them 2 years ago under our pine trees.  I should have left a couple for more...

With 'most phones' I've dealt with (I don't do Iphones though) you've got two options...

1.  a cable connection and then you open your windows explorer (on a PC, no idea on a Mac...)

once you find your phone look for a file that says 'camera' or DCIM (digital camera image something)...

find your photo and cut and paste it to your computer....

2.  bluetooth...   All recent phones have it and even most desktop computers...  I would say all laptops today...

pair the two devices and transfer the selected photos...  the rough part is sometimes figuring out where the picture ended up on the computer!!!  Search and you'll find it!!!

And the work around!!!

Email the photo to someone...  even yourself...  from your phone!!!   Then open your email on your computer and if you sent it to yourself it's right there...  if you sent it to someone else just open your 'sent email' folder and it will be right there...  download it to your computer!

Good to know since my first smart phone should arrive today.

The Virgin Mobile prepaid $20 every 3 months flip phone was a great deal but didn't have all the options available to a $10 a month Republic smart phone.

I could have used it the other day when a small imported SUV with a passenger that looked like a gnome stopped in front of my drive for a stare-down.

Can you download the picture direct to the phones memory (save file as) and then cable or bluetooth it to your computer?

Usually in areas near trees and rotting wood but with some sunlight but dampness.  It pays to know your 'shrooms.  The wrong ones will kill you.

Best place to look is along a tree line in a remote area (not walked in or on).

I want to try some "Hen of the Woods" mushrooms.

I watched a video about some mushroom hunters that go out and pick all kinds of them and sell them to restaurants for $20 a pound. They were in Michigan hunting in one episode.

These Hen of the Woods are picked in the Fall of the year and can weigh up to 40 lbs. Supposed to taste like chicken.

Different people have different 'theories' on where to hunt.  Around here we have lots of old apple trees and I've always had good luck within 30-40 feet of them.  We'll find them there year after year after year and then some years...    nothing!!!!

The ones in the above picture in our son's hand are ones he found over in Branch County.  He'd never searched in that area but had time on his hands so he decided to go looking for an area with dead ash trees...   BINGO!!!  We have lots of dead Ash trees (actually stumps, we've harvested the dead trees for firewood) and I didn't find a single one.

A note about something I said about our son in that picture...   he's our 'only' son...   so I guess that does make him the oldest (and the youngest)...   I'd been mentioning both of our daughters in other threads so I was just thinking 'oldest - youngest' I guess!

But the strangest spot I've ever found a Morel is right out in the middle of our lawn...   high and dry in the sand and wide open sun.  I was mowing with the big mower and I almost didn't even get off the tractor to go look because I was so sure it couldn't be a Morel...   I finally stopped before I 'sliced' it on the go and sure enough it was a Morel...   that was probably 10 years ago...   this time of year I always mow that area with the trim mower but I haven't seen another one there since!!!

I've asked many times if there are dogs that can sniff them out and never heard of one...   a Google search always goes to police drug dogs and 'magic' mushrooms...

Looks like maybe a pig would be the way to go...

here's a pig hunting a truffle (mushroom cousin)...

but you'd have to get a lot of mushrooms to feed this big boy:

I've been back in the woods a few times and haven't noticed any but haven't really been off the beaten (mowed actually) trails to look...   it's still very, very wet in the low spots.  Guess I'll put on my knee high boots and go take a walk.  Just listening to the weather report on 24NBC Toledo and KN says highs in the 50s today but they will be warmer as May gets here.

White's or blacks?  2 weeks on my N. Michigan property.  I'll be up there with a shopping bag (paper variety).  Mav' if you want more to cultivate. when and if you pick them, carefully shake the little black spores off from under the domes, on to the ground.  That propagates more.  It's a little chilly at night for them yet.  We need some more rain actually and warm nights to make them 'pop'.

Yesterday was a good day for Morels. My sister-in-law found 15 in her yard, my brother found 14 and my nephews found 100 during their lunch break from work. They look like the big yellow ones that come up near the end of the season.

My wife and I went looking today and all we found was a coiled up Garter snake trying to stay warm and out of the wind.

We saw a lot of Pheasant Back or Dryad's Saddle but they were too big already. they get tough if they're bigger than 3 inches.
