Title: Anytime you think you're having a bad day, someone is having it worse than you!
Post by: BigRedDog on April 08, 2014, 11:26:43 AM
This place needs a little bit of humor injected again...

Here's one for side car 'flip'...

heck, maybe it's even one of his company trucks...

or better yet 'him' (the tweet did say no injuries or I wouldn't have even hinted at that) ;) ;) ;)

How many wheels on an 18 wheeler?

I wonder what the last 2 words were as this was starting to 'go over' ??? ??? ???

I'll bet we can't print them here whatever they were ;) ;) ;)

The guy who got burnt up on Telegraph is DEFINITELY having a worse day than I am!

Or maybe not!

Two days in a row our 'bad day' award is going to a trucker in Toledo...

These must be truckers not clear on the concept of keeping the wheels on the pavement and not in the air...

I hope this one has some help cleaning up his mess...

if not they're going to be there all day :o :o :o

There weren't any reports of injuries on the tweet I saw about the crash this morning so hopefully no one was hurt.  Maybe both drivers will get teeshirts with this on them:

Maybe putting a pond at the end of the runway wasn't the smartest idea in the first place ;D ;D ;D

This is near Daytona Beach...

this might have been more fun than watching a few stock cars crash :o :o :o

It happened yesterday and I'm sure it ruined someone's day although the tow truck operator looks like he's smiling all the way to the bank :P :P :P

I hope they fed the alligator before they got in the water ;) ;) ;)

Here's the Google aerial view of the site.  It's a very large and popular 'fly in' community.  After you land your plane you can then taxi it right up to your house and put it in your private hangar.  Keeping up with the neighbors must be a ***** in that neighborhood ;) ;) ;)  We've driven around it a couple of times but way too many people in the area for me :( :( :(

So if you have to swim away from your landing is it still a good landing?

Apparently it's easier to have a bad day if you're a young gal in something skimpy:

My Mom, for such a simple woman is a power of strength through adversity, taught me not only by her difficult life but also in occasional words and examples that always put things in perspective for me that there are many who have more difficult lives than what we saw.  I will always appreciate her for those subtle teachings.

None of the accidents were ours btw.  The one on the Central exit and the one at the BE's exit are both high center of gravity rollovers and both drivers should be cited for execessive speed and failure to control.  You can't negotiate an off ramp with a high center of gravity load at the posted speed limit and not expect it roll.

In the case of the Central Avenue Flat bed roll, thats a Utility Trailer, steel framed, aluminum deck, ours are all aluminum/aluminum.  If the load stayed on the trailer, it's considered securely chained (under ICC/DOT regulations).  If the load came off, the driver will also be cited for an improperly secured load in addition to Failure to control and excessive speed for conditions.

Failure to control resulting in a damage accident is 4 points plus CSA points to the carrier and the police/DOT will look at his log book which may or may not result in more CSA points.

The I75 accident, because the driver is deceased, any infractions will be levied against his employer, like log book violations or equipment viloations.

It's tough driving a commercial vehicle today.  Every corner has a barney fife with a ticket book and every carrier has their own enforcement personnnel.  Thats what I do.  I give drivers bad hair days..... ;D

The accident on 75 involving the two van trucks, I believe we will find out that the one driver had either a heart attack or an acute mechanical failure (the one that pasted the bridge abutment) and was dead on the scene.  The second vehicle wasn't able to avoid getting into the fray.  That driver probably won't be charged with anything but is out his truck and someone will have to stand good for the cargo...  a bad day for sure.

this is on N-bound 75 at the very south edge of Toledo this morning.

Ya know, I look at some of those pictures, and I wonder... how in the hell did they get in that predicament?  Who drives a huge tractor through a mud bog?  LOL

And once they get stuck, who keeps on trying to get it out, while burying it deeper and deeper?  Amazing.

Don't get me wrong - I've been stuck a few times before.  But I knew once I was stuck, to STOP trying to get out without a little help.  All it does is bury you deeper.

When I was still very young my Dad taught me that as soon as you feel one wheel spinning you better be hitting the brake to that wheel and if the other one starts spinning then you'd better stop and unhook whatever it is you're pulling.  At that point you could just drive out probably 80-90% of the time.  We always had several long chains and I learned how to rig a hitch to pull from the opposite end of where most machinery was designed to be pulled from.

And sometimes you're just stuck too :o :o :o

A city down in the land of cotton had an old smokestack that needed to be taken down.  Sounds like their two options were to hire a contractor or use a city crew and equipment to do it themselves...   no idea who made the final decision but I'm sure part of the discussion included something along the line of "Oh c'mon...  What could go wrong" ??? ??? ???

Looks like they checked through the credentials of city staff and found that old Billie Bob John had lots of experience blowing stumps out of the back 40 so a 'plan' was hatched!!!

After all...   "What could go wrong" ;D ;D ;D

First they tried putting 30 pounds of DY NO MITE around the base but it didn't all go off so the stack was only 'crippled' but not dead!

So, they went back in and hooked up some more DY NO MITE...

I'm sure there are still plenty of the onlookers that are still mumbling "Oh C'mon...  What could go wrong" ??? ??? ???

Not sure why it still didn't fall after the 2nd round of DY NO MITE but I'm sure at that point one of the 'big shots' decided that the DY NO MITE wasn't the way to go...   or maybe they were just plain out of DY NO MITE!!!

Anyway, the next plan was to send that nice new city owned track hoe in to finish it off...

after all...   "What could go wrong"?

I will give a spoiler alert for the squeamish...

the operator only had a few scrapes (and maybe some messy drawers) ;) ;) ;)

I was surprised how long it took for their EMS to respond...  you can see their vehicles in the background in the beginning of the video.

I wonder who had to make the call to Komatsu to see if this would be covered under warranty ;D ;D ;D

In small towns of the Midwest and South you will see groups of city leaders get out and try and tackle something like this....and 9 times out of 10, a bottle of Jack Daniels can be found close around.   ;D

Talk about a bad day....how bout that Russian pilot whose plane was shot down, and then fired at while parachuting to the ground.  THAT is a bad day.

Agreed Fuzz, agreed.

Earlier this summer when I had a pretty major surgery at the VA Hospital in Little Rock (very good, contrary to rumors) I had a tuff recovery. Was easy to be frustrated in my body's response and easy to feel sorry for myself. But then I'd go out to the smoke area and hang out for awhile. Saw the condition of some of the other Vets there.

I didn't feel sorry for myself anymore.  :-[

Like I always instilled in my daughters, everything is relative in terms of what life has to offer.

Until you see worse in life that others life under, don't be critical and be understanding of the definition of "life sucks for me"!

Same event but actually a different video.  This one is shot from a drone and gives a much different perspective.

I noticed this morning when I posted the link from NBC24 in Toledo that the video was from an ABC station in Alabama...  I wonder if that has anything to do with it being pulled down :-\ :-\ :-\

Billy Bob and Jimmy Joe probably thought it needed taken down because they remembered as kids that there was a Confederate Flag on top of it and was just trying to do the politically correct thing.

I got a couple of good laughs out of it.  The original article said the reason they wanted it down was because they thought it was getting 'unsafe' and might fall over on it's own...   I would say after the two rounds of dynamite and what it took to still get it to topple that it probably would have stood just fine for another 50 years anyway.

I saw another article today that said the damage to the excavator was over $100K!!!

It looks like that demolition was planned in the bar, and executed immediately after happy hour.

God I love the South - except for the bugs, and the humidity, and the heat.

But Southerners - man they are fun and they will try anything once, no matter how bad an idea it seems to be.

My Mom was born and grew up in south Georgia and Florida and we would travel through and visit the area regularly as we were growing up.  Spent a lot of time in Atlanta which was considered to be the 'enlightened' south!!!

When I was about 5 or 6 my uncle (my Mom's sister's husband) was a big shot at B. F. Goodrich Chemical Co. in Akron and he was sent out to Henry, Illinois (just north of Peoria) to open and manage a new agri-chemical plant.  Even though Henry is almost due west (may actually be a mile north) of Peoria it seemed like it was a thousand miles to the south!!!

Although my aunt enjoyed it I think it was a bit of a 'culture shock' to my cousins.  We enjoyed our frequent visits though.

What are all these truck 'drivers' doing when they should be reading the signs that indicate how high (or low) an overpass is?

Seems like this happens quite often.  This one should have been obviously 'very low' to anyone in a truck!!!

It's not a Wal-Mart company driver, that is a contractor, US Express. and it don't take a lot of speed to peel aluminum sheet, just a steel plate at a 10' height on a 13'6 trailer.

Obviously the clown cannot read the height sign.

How the hell are the 3 on the very far left still hanging on?  Bottoms must lock to the top of the one below it?

Containers actually lock together at all four corners with forged  half turn pins and lock to the deck of a container ship, the same way.  Someone didn't lock all 4 corners on the bottom set.

If you happen to get a chance to look at a container trailer with a container on it, you can see the lock pins.  The DOT and International DOT has very specific requirements as to tensile strength and shear.

What I find interesting is ro-ro ships that haul automobiles (like Honda's) from Japan to here.  All the cars are below decks secured with web straps, sitting on their wheels (and I presume in park with the e-brake on).  Everything is fine until the vessel encounters heavy seas and rolls a lot.  If the cars aren't securely lashed, they break loose and slide sideways sometimes causing the ship to capsize.

Some interesting You-Tube vids of capsized ro-ro's and what it takes to salvage one...

Look at the website I posted above on the tie downs...

https://www.aimu.org/aimupapers/OnDeck.pdf (https://www.aimu.org/aimupapers/OnDeck.pdf)

The top of page 12 shows how bad the corrosion is on some of the older containers and ships and also how the receiver on the deck can get damaged...

probably a crane operator with a shaky hand >:( >:( >:(

Hard to make things 'lock up' in either of those scenarios ;) ;) ;)

It does seem like a disproportionate number of these stores involve semi trucks.

This was south of Toledo this morning.

I hope no one here has any 'special orders' they were waiting on from Lowes :o :o :o

One of the other TV stations had an even better picture but I can't find it right now!

Glad it wasn't my furniture they were moving!!!

This happened up in Ann Arbor on Saturday.  Apparently this railroad overpass gets hit on a regular basis.  Interesting that the local tow guy doesn't think the city should do anything to reduce the number of crashes ;D ;D ;D

Here's another crash at the same intersection...

this truck was a little more solid and resulted in injuries!!!

I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out there may have been some alcohol involved ;) ;) ;)

Various neighbors around here have had a display every night since Friday...

our dog is ready to get a whole night of sleep :o :o :o

My dog about had a nervous breakdown Tuesday night.

I'm thinking about talking to Zorn how this fireworks law was cruel to animals - and the owners that live with them.

Even my Pyrs had to come in the house. They were never like that before but the last couple of years they can't wait for me to let them in.

Our pup paces and pants.  Not too bad around here actually.  People are supporting the Chinese, maybe N. Koreans too.

Interestingly, my high powered rifles don't bother her as much.

We have some butthead south of here with a fixation for Tannerite.  (I presume a he).  They are always making huge booms.

Whatever blows your dress up I guess.

It's funny, if we hear someone shooting guns in the neighborhood, it doesn't bother the dog at all. If it's a full automatic, she will run in the direction of the shots and bark. No problem.

But . . if she hears the slightest rumble of thunder in the distance, or a fireworks boom from miles away, she goes into a nervous panic.

We have to give her a substantial dose of Xanax, but it takes about 2 hours to really kick in.

Dogs must hear those much differently than us

I'm thinking it's what they 'feel' as much as it is what they actually hear.

Dogs have better hearing than we do (in most cases) so I'd guess they sense vibrations better than we do too.  Plus they're so typically laying around completely spread out on the ground so they have a large sensory area to feel that sort of thing.  An active dog and especially a good hunting dog that is working a field does not get upset by a gunshot and I'd guess part of that is that they're on their feet and running so their feet don't get a chance to feel the shock waves as much as a dog just laying around 'on guard'!

A dog in the 'on guard' status is certainly listening and looking (if they're awake) and feeling for anything out of the ordinary.

The Big Red Dog and an English Setter we had both had a magic disdain for a UPS truck as they rumbled down the road.  The setter was a few years older than the BRD so he very well may have 'taught' her that.  Whatever, they both acted the same way.  Even when the setter was old and deaf though he could still 'feel' a UPS truck going by and would still bark.

Another man decided to burn a bee's nest out of the ground...

sounds like he may have decided that if a little accelerant will do a little good then a 'lot' will do a lot of good!!!

Unfortunately it doesn't always work out that way  :o :o :o

I disturbed a bees nest in the ground a couple of years ago with my mower.  I must have gotten hit 50 times before i got away.
I bought a spray can at the hardware that foams up as you spray it in the hole so they can't get out.  And i waited until dark..
