Title: Harbaugh has his coaching staff in place... what do you think so far?
Post by: BigRedDog on January 20, 2015, 05:25:03 PM
I'm hearing pretty positive responses in the press...

http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/2015/01/20/drevno-players-predict-pretty-quick-turnaround-um/22054033/ (http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/2015/01/20/drevno-players-predict-pretty-quick-turnaround-um/22054033/)

I have to admit I even did a bit of a double take when I saw he had hired his son...

but I guess it's safe to say that young man is 'surrounded with talent' so he should be able to get the job done...   and the idea of how he will be able to 'relate' to the young players sounds logical.

Hiring his son makes total sense - if you realize that family is a big part of the reason that Harbaugh came back to Ann Arbor.

He wants to do this with his family - and having his son there is a big part of that.

Another thing - his brother was sorry to see Jay go - and coming from that family I don't doubt the kid has talent.

I think this staff is incredibly impressive - better than we have ever had in Ann Arbor perhaps.  It is clear that Harbaugh is not threatened by having talent on his staff - and talent wants to work for him.

I can't wait for the spring game!

I'm getting pretty excited.  Harbaugh has put together some pretty impressive coaches.  I agree that he isn't intiminatef by anyone.  Other than Mattsion Hoke had a bunch of no names.

Sounds like the entire staff is working pretty hard at trying to 'flip' a few commits before signing day...

and of course trying to find the miraculously overlooked possible recruits still out there!!!

I wonder if Harbaugh was referring to the Smith case, and not the Weber case, or perhaps both.

He sure didn't call out Ohio State, and his reference sure could apply to UCLA or Ohio State.

The funny thing is OSU too the bait.

I guess they figure lying to kids is okay as long as you are winning.

Oh well, if you don't get it, you don't get it.

That will be the other side of this story to watch next year...

The probable decline of the NFL's SF team - because the ownership wanted a yes man in place - as they think they know more about football than Harbaugh  8*

The CEO is the guy who lost his President of operations job but did bring in Harbaugh to resurrect the team in 2011...  Jed York
He was replaced by Gideon Yu - a facebook/youtube/yahoo exec  who bought into the team

Rich people don't like to be shown up apparently - so they got a yes man

LOL   just look at the basic Wiki resume's and judge for yourself.

Quote
When Harbaugh, Dantonio, Meyer and others gather Friday at the "Sound Mind, Sound Body" camp at Dakota High in Macomb, I imagine they'll be cordial. They might even share a chuckle about the SEC's hilarious outrage over Harbaugh's satellite-camp tour. If Big Ten coaches can look past their inherent aggravation with Michigan, they'll recognize Harbaugh's motive reflects their own, just more flamboyantly.

Ohio State and Michigan State are legitimate national title contenders again, and Michigan fighting back doesn't diminish what they've done. That's the whiny fan reaction, that all the Harbaugh publicity is producing meaningless "victories." He hasn't rocketed up the recruiting rankings yet, but rather than wait for players to bow to the winged helmet, he's actively chasing.

Quote
Now the SEC is pushing the NCAA to ban satellite camps because they create an unfair advantage, the most-amusing statement ever. Maybe if the Big Ten took a few more elite Southern kids off their hands, those schools wouldn't have to grossly over-sign, like gluttons at a Cracker Barrel.

Ah, Cracker Barrel, Harbaugh's favorite restaurant. Why does he like it so much? What does it all mean?!

Clues are sprinkled on Harbaugh's Twitter page, and they're probably not as deep as they seem. (Or are they?) A few days ago, he posted these lyrics from a John Lennon song: "People say I'm crazy doing what I'm doing, give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin. When I say I'm OK, they look at me kind of strange."

That's the look all right, and by nature and calculation, Harbaugh is embracing it.

ANN ARBOR -- Don Brown guided the No. 1-ranked defense in America last season.

Apparently, that was good enough for Jim Harbaugh.

Sports Illustrated reported Sunday that Brown -- who spent the past three seasons running Boston College's defense -- will be Michigan's new defensive coordinator.

Brown, 60, led a Boston College defense that ranked No. 1 nationally with 254.3 yards per game allowed in 2015. BC's rush defense allowed 83.2 yards per game (No. 2) and its pass defense was ranked No. 8 (171.2).

Michigan finished # 12 in the final AP Poll...

is that good enough for Harbaugh's first year?

Where does he go from here?

I didn't watch the game last night.  i have read the paper and been on the computer for 2 hrs and still don't know who won.  Must have been a really important game.  I guess i could have gone to ESPN.com and found out but i'd a though it would have been mentioned somewhere.

The Brilliance of Harbaugh is amazing...

He's done it with the Satellite Camps -
Now he's bringing HS football back to the Big House - (first since Bo was around)
and it doesn't hurt that these schools turn out some top talent :)
==============================================
Paramus (N.J.) Catholic High School will open its season with a game inside the Big House at the University of Michigan the day before the Wolverines' opener against Hawaii. The Paladins will play St. Frances Academy of Baltimore at 7 p.m. ET on Sept. 2.

It was announced earlier that there will be 14 other high school teams set to square off in Michigan Stadium Aug. 25-27. Those teams are all in-state programs and include Detroit Catholic Central, Ann Arbor Pioneer, Farmington Hills Harrison, Brighton, Detroit East English Village and others.

What JH is doing for recruiting is third fiddle!

JH is showing young men how to be MEN!!!!!  JH couldn't care less if they don the Maize and Blue or the storied winged helmet!!!

JH care about KIDS, helping KIDS, developing KIDS, making MEN OUT OF BOYS!!!!!  That is what JH is doing, and he is doing it anywhere he can.  Anywhere is second to AA...... but anywhere will be well served to receive the message!

I seriously hope Sparty continues to isolate itself... kids are starting to turn into thugs and just waiting for draft day!  One teaches tradition, the other promises a paycheck!

Congrats Sparty on your most recent 8 year run of "quality athletes"!!!!!  LOL!!!!!!

I think Sparty is doing the same old, same old.

No need to go above and beyond.

After all - they got their azz kicked in a playoff game.

I guess that is "good enough" for Sparty.

Did anyone notice that you can't buy a new Spartan Season football ticket this year?

You can only buy a "Mini Game Pack" with every game - except the Michigan Game.

Way to go Spartans.

What are you going to do?  Put them all on Stub Hub?

You are absolutely correct.

For an MSU game to go high on Stub Hub the away crowd is required to drive the price up.

Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame.

Outside of those 3 games - forget it.  No one cares.  You can buy tickets on Stub Hub at or below face value.

It cracks me up that MSU is keeping one of the key games out of the package this year.  Frankly - they should have kept OSU out of it too.  Then they wouldn't have sold ANY "ticket packs" because you could have bought them all on Stub Hub for $10 bucks each.

That's all you got?  You have been irrelevant for the last 20 years other than half a National Championship 20 years ago and still manage to fill a stadium with WalMart Wolverines every Saturday.  Did you forget that you had to give away free tickets with a six pack of Coke two years ago?  You have won 1 out of the last 10 against OSU and 1 out of the last 8 against the Spartans. You win on attendance.  I'll take the scoreboard kind of wins.  I predict 3 losses again for Michigan, including one in East Lansing this fall.

From a former UM student- as if that means anything to bandwagon sparty

LOL  "Other than a National Championship"...

So when was the last time Sparty won one of those?
1966 in case you can't remember that far back :)

Sparty had losing records in the 80's 90's 2000's    and unlike Michigan's two bad coaches - they had  a string of them -

Heck even the Great St. Nick was barely over .500

5 good years out of last 6 for Dantonio - I'll give that but it coincided with Michigan's bumbling with Rodriquez and Hoke -

Frank "Muddy" Waters   .303
George J. Perles           .504
Nick L. Saban                   .592
Bobby Williams                   .469
Morris Watts                    .333
John L. Smith                  .458

Attendance - it's not even close!

265 consecutive games with over 100k in attendance -    Wait list for season tickets...
Sparty has only sold 60K season tickets 7 times in their history
(http://www.msuspartans.com/facilities/spartan-stadium.html (http://www.msuspartans.com/facilities/spartan-stadium.html))   and their single game record was back in 1990 of 80,401...   whoo hoo!    so when they are playing their best no one comes to watch?  ;D

So desparate for respect - yet  fans won't give it - wonder why?
bandwagon not big enough?

So 60k  a few times willing to support MSU,
and a stretch of 6 years is all it takes to make a Spartan happy ...
Will be interesting to see how the next 6 turn out.

For the Record  108 games played in the series
Michigan won   68   MSU won  35   5 ties   .653

and to be fair I guess we should compare that 80's-90's 2000's era coaching

Bo Schembechler   1969-89   21   194-48-5   .796   143-24-3   .850
Gary Moeller   1990-94     5   44-13-3   .758   30-8-2   .775
Lloyd Carr        1995-2007     13   122-40   .753   81-23   .779

I'd rather have a 100 + years of winning (in fact the team with the most wins in NCAA history)  - rather than strut around like its an accomplishment to beat Rich Rod or Hoke's teams...

As far as Nike/Jordan - it's probably a stretch to teach you about business and synergy -

Prof and MN, you guys need to just ignore the Sparty troll.  Don’t take the bait.

I’m looking forward to the season.  Stopped at the M Den last week and got all geared up with Nike/Jordan stuff (Even though I AM a liberal, Prof, so I donated two bags of adidas stuff to Goodwill :)).  It all looks great, especially the player uniforms and shoes.

I only wish the home season offered better games.  Pretty sad when a so-so Penn State team is the marquee game.  The first game should be fun for a few minutes with all the hoopla, but a lot of fans will be gone not long after halftime.  I do have tickets for Ohio State down there, so it should be fun seeing how meaningful that game is.  Would love for it to be for all the marbles.

I hope O’Korn can return to the effective gunslinger he was his freshman year at Houston.  If so, it will be a fun season.

Speaking of sky miles - the big question last year was QB, and it seems to be again this year...   here's hoping to a better start than last year - and a better "luck" against sparty - and a better performance against OSU

I'm going to proudly wear my Adidas stuff until the wife brings me home the Nike haul from the end of the season Athletic Department purge sale at the hospital.   The sale last year was pretty epic, so I will be wearing last year's stuff this year.  I am looking forward to saying goodbye to idiocracy yellow.  I may buy a new Hockey Jersey if they didn't radically go up in price.

I can't wait for the season.   I also have OSU away tickets.   Hopefully it is for all the marbles, but maybe MSU will already have knocked the Buckeyes out.  Time will tell.  I hate going to Columbus.   Beer sales won't help.  I may do a road trip to Iowa too.  Great place for a game, and great fans.

I had to let me next door neighbor in the stadium have my tickets for Central Florida so he could bring his kids to the game for the first time.  If anyone has an extra let me know?

Can't wait for Hawaii!

As for Spartans,  I have a lot of friends who are MSU grads.  They are being very quiet, as am I.  I will let the recruiting and the games do the talking.

Trouble?   I'd say discipline now leads to leadership and continuity for the players who follow the rules.

Internal discipline  - so that means they didn't do like the SEC and have players beating women, stealing, get caught with stolen guns... and get a free pass because they play football :)

.... oh wait didn't Michigan State have a gun wielding player that Dantonio  looked the other way - because he was a good player  ;)

I've been by the airport a couple times this week.  You can't miss the huge billboard pimping MSU football tickets.  Must be a great team :P

The Spartans decided to not sell new Season Tickets this year.

Instead they decided to sell a "Mini Season Pack" with every game included except Michigan.

I am guessing that they didn't get alot of takers on that offer.

Well we know the expectations aren't too high when their single game attendance record was back in the 90's -

you'd have thought with the success of the past 6 years Sparty's would come out and support them...

However they are like politicians after the fund raiser is over,   gone!

Three recruits decommitt this week and now a four star freshman quits the team today.  Things look like there going great in Ann Arbor! How many more OSU and MSU losses will M fans tolerate?

It sounds to me like he wasn't prepared to contribute anyway.

You either get with the program, or you get out.

As for the de-commits, look at your own recruiting class Sparty before you worry about ours.

You are dealing with 16 and 17 year old kids.  I am not going to lose sleep when they change their mind.  We will get our kids.

The odds makers aren't impressed with the Wisconsin win over Sparty...

Wisconson is a 9 point underdog?

I heard ten this morning.  I had guessed it would be about a touchdown. Weather says 70% chance of rain.  That would suck, because this is the only home game this season that looks like it might be competitive.

Tickets for Penn State were going for $25 the day before the game.  Face value was $99.  Two legendary programs and a perfect weather forecast.  People in my section were talking about it.  Is it not worth the hassle now that you can get great coverage on a nice big Ultra HD TV that you can buy for well under $1,000?

that can never be usurped by any Ultra HD TV

+9 seems about right. Wisconsin has a redshirt freshman at QB playing another road game....anything can happen.I do give Wisconsin credit as they have already beat two ranked teams. This game will be the 1st test for M as their competition has been less then competitive. M needs to make some hay this year as MSU is down and OSU is very young.

I think that's why the oddsmakers in Vegas had State picked too.....that and there were some injuries.  Regardless, the Spartans looked bad.

Agree on this being Michigan's first test too......should be a good game.

I took Wisconsin and the points.......and Under on total points of 45.

I'm expecting a low scoring, close game......and would have took Michigan straight up.

From what I've seen Sparty was kind of lucky to beat ND who it looks like a really bad team.  Wiscy beat LSU who doesn't appear to be a very good team.  Michigan slugged it out with Colorado and put them away. Then Colorado goes into Oregon and wins there.
I'm guessing Michigan wins by more than 20

Interesting stats -

Games where defense kept opponents to 7 points or less

2008-14  (Rodriquez/Hoke)   7
2015-16  Harbaugh               9  (so far this year)

I was just thinking on how the Spartans season reminds me of Rich Rods first year - only I'm not sure it's a slam dunk they get to his win total that year.

The walls of criticism are certainly going to start falling on JH and the Wolverines.  Going to be interesting to see how that is handled by JH.

Big10 is tough this year, especially the East.  Looks like a 4 loss season to me, but will get a bowl bid but bottom line they are a slightly above average team this year.

All i see is an underperforming offensive line.  There should be talent there but maybe it's the way the OL coach has them playing.  it hasn't worked in the last 6 years.
The QB's haven't been very good and a bad Oline makes it worse.
I think the defense overplays trying to compensate for a very poor offense.
I have mixed feelings over starting the other QB's.  OKorn done after this year and Speight might be done too.  Sounds good to get the new guys some experience but that could backfire as they might get beat up.

Makes sense.  Won't be a title this year so see if any of that young talent get some experience provided they don't lose red shirt status.

Given that this year isn't a B1G or National Championship.....

Is it time to put more of the future youngsters on that line?

Get them some coaching and perhaps pave the way for next year?

They are going to be bowl eligible no matter what.

I guess the same question would go for QB.

To me the marked decline in QB is worrysome.   This guy couldn't beat Speith, and the only other thing I can think of is they don't want to waste a years eligibility on the Freshman.

I am guessing they don't want to destroy a freshman behind this O Line.

Perhaps they are more realistic about what they had then we were.

I'm totally happy with Harbaugh!  Hes like Hoke with a hat and a headset. 1-13 vs OSU. 2-12 vs MSU.  The streaks continue!  I see Hillary was on campus last night. I wonder if Harbaugh went to see her.  They are probably pals since they are both so good at making excuses for losing. I saw the latest bowl projections have Michigan in the Holiday Bowl. I'm projecting Motor City or Weed Eater Bowl. Looking 7-5 in the face while MSU is playing for a championship has to sting a little doesn't it Wal Mart Wolverine fans? lololololololol

Kind of funny making fun of your rivals recruiting class - when your class is even worse.
