So...

if I want to put Fuzz on ignore and I go by his IP address and next week he moves to a new hotel do I have to do it all over again?

What if he's posting from his phone at work and then from his tablet or laptop back in his room?

What happens when he's back in Monroe...

do I have to look at all his posts again ??? ??? ???

Ok, you are right.   Logic should be name or any IP addresses used by that user.

2 reasons...

Update the Ignore feature use IP address and not user name.

I'm not 'techie' enough to know all the details on IP addresses although I understand the basic concept that every individual device connected to the internet has it's own address.

Another 'what if' question (and I won't be surprised if you don't know the answer either)...

I know there may be a few members that are using the wifi service at one of the library branches for their access.  Way back in the very early days of MT they had the settings so only one 'user' could come from a given IP address so whoever was the first user to sign up from the library system completely blocked any new member from being able to sign in using the library.  Ultimately they had to back off on that restriction so that any member could be using the library system...   I guess in theory everyone could have been able to use it.

So, with the above background in mind...

If I block 'the fuzz' (see above photo Fuzz) and he's been logging on at the main library then will I end up blocking everyone that tries to log on from the library?

Will I be blocking everyone that is using the library wifi system wide?

Not sure if I explained that well enough for you to see where I'm going with it!?!?!?

I'm sorry that my republican bro Excelsior seems to be having these technical issues.  I would be more than happy to donate some of my time to provide technical assistance in helping him figure out how to not to read posts by people he wants to ignore.

Yes, it would capture those IP addresses and ignore any posters using a common IP.

Ok, so as long as a poster(s) I want to ignore is using only one device and staying somewhat stationary then it sounds like this may be an 'enhancement'.

I think I'm going to leave it alone for a bit and let you give us a review in maybe 30-60-90 days.

But....

The only IP addresses that are visible to a particular poster are his own.  No others are accessable except to the moderators and the forum IT.

The way I understand it, one IP address per Modem, hook a WiFi router to it and 6 people use it they all use the same IP address.

Actually, on the cable side of the modem there is 1 IP address, but on the router side there are different network IP addresses for each device connected so that everything doesn't get mixed up.

BTW the internet has run out of IPv4 addresses and is in the process of switching to IPv6 which means eventually we will have to have new routers and servers that support it.

Back when we had dial up you ended up with a different IP address every time you logged on.  Now it remains constant until for whatever reason you have to reboot your modem-router and then you end up with a different address.

If you're really interested in digging into your network you can download a free app (at least on Android) that will give you all sorts of neat info on every device connected to your network.  You can easily assign names for devices and it will tell you when the last time they were active.  If someone were to get past your security it will let you 'evict' them.

Not exactly....

For years I had a static IP through my provider (D&P Communications) and paid extra per month for it, reason was for security at the rackspace end in Atlanta, Georgia.  When my IT switched from Atlanta for Toronto and changed the front end software, I was able to go back to a floating IP and loose the charges.

All my service provider does is provide the electronic conduit for the transmission of my input to Toronto, Canada, where my electronic image is handled on the server there.  It could very well be routed through Australia to Toronto via undersea cables...

Typically a service provider will change IP address assignments on a random schedule as predicated by their software, sometimes, every month or every couple months.  Thats called floating.  Static is, it remains constanr.  Mine was constant again, for security reasons in the Atlanta hub.

There are buildings in major cities that hold nothing but floors and floors of servers that route data, 24/7.  All climate controlled and manned by small staff of techinicians that monitor the health of the servers, why my IT switched.  He found out his servers weren't being monitored correctly.

There is such a building in Southfield, Michigan, on the north end of M39.  Nothing in there but electronics.  It even has armed guards.

My IT refers to it as the 'information highway'.

I'm in a little different scenario that most posters on here because I lease a .com site and have for years.

You own nothing but your intellectual property on the net, you lease everything and anyone can read anything you post on a publically viewed forum such as this one which why I maintain be careful what you post as anyone anywhere can read it.  Thats why everyone worldwide knows Frenchfry, and TPP are idiots. ;D

We used to have a regular poster here that in his signature line was a picture of Obama holding a poster.....and on the poster was your IP address.  I remember the accuracy of that thing after seeing it change from if I was at home and not on the company network, versus when I was on the company network.

Appears my guess about you being behind the scenes at the forum was correct.
Wasn't sure since you seemed to know so much about the dead obese guy that owned that towing company (Jerry’s Newport Standard Towing)
Still trying to connect the dots about why you chose me to stalk.

You're not using enough tin foil...

The paranoia can get through until you apply much much more...
