If you'd like to see the old Eyes & Ears at monroenews.com, you can view the archive by clicking the following link. We'd ask that you continue any of those old threads here, at the new forums.

Navigation Suggestion: The front page should have a list of all topics like the old forum, so a user can go directly to the thread that interests them. Off to the side, perhaps, should be the most current posts from different threads.

Hi, MonroeMom:

I believe the page you're referring to is the main page of MonroeTalks.com, which pulls content from all the areas of the site (pictures, calendar, forums). If you're looking for a listing of all forum topics, you can get that by clicking Your Talk at the top of any MonroeTalks page or by going directly to this URL (feel free to bookmark it if you aren't interested in the other content):

Are there only two topics or I am just unable to find them?
The "Key Stats" say there are 91 posts in 23 topics but I can not get to them
Navigation nightmare!

When will the old threads be transferred so we can continue our discussions?

Same here.... I see there are supposedly 93 posts, but I have no idea how to get to them!!

supermom and and MonroeMom,

I understand what you mean.

As for the Key Stats, we had a testing platform where people could post about features and problems with MonroeTalks.com--that's where the invisible posts are coming from--they've been moved to a different board so we could start fresh here.

As for transferring old posts, we'd thought to just encourage people to continue the posts they were interested in continuing here. (You can start a new thread from the topic listing by clicking 'Start new topic'.) Having said that, it's a reasonable request that we would move the most recent topics. I'll start that process now. Thanks for your patience as we make the necessary adjustments to this new system--it is much more flexible than the previous system.

Post by: jcastellese on June 18, 2007, 02:05:36 PM
I've transferred a solid number of recently modified posts from the Eyes & Ears archives to this forum. If there are any older threads anyone would like to continue, simply repost the subject in a new topics, and, if you'd like, provide a link to the archive by copying and pasting the address from the address bar when viewing the thread.

Thanks for your patience and your input!

jcastellese, I noticed that you transferred some of the posts from the older forum and I noticed that you attached your name to them. Why is your name there instead of the person who started the thread?
Title: Re: Welcome to Your Talk! Read this to get started.
Post by: nerd on June 20, 2007, 12:40:09 PM
I'm not sure on the forum engine being used here but user accounts in most forums are tied to an ID of some sort and this ID is not going to match between two separate forum pages.  When the old forum posts were moved over my guess is that there was no easy way to attribute them properly.
Title: Re: Welcome to Your Talk! Read this to get started.
Post by: jcastellese on June 20, 2007, 01:22:21 PM
Mayonnaise:

There were a number of factors involved. The forum system we were using before didn't conform to the most recent software conventions, so user / post data was nearly impossible to export. Also, there were many registrants in the old system that were, quite frankly, inactive, and to spend time and resources transferring them to this system seemed wasteful.

In addition, this forum is only one part of MonroeTalks.com, the core of which is designed to synchronize to each of its parts.

All of these factors contributed to the need for a fresh registration process--I think the community as a whole will benefit from this decision.

Of course, there were a number of ongoing conversations at the old Eyes & Ears forums, and a great deal of demand for their continuation, so I recreated the first page or two of recent threads here with links to the old posts, under my account since, as nerd said, the original posters had not yet registered here. You'll notice that I include the name of the last comment on the old forum in each transferred thread.  I realize this creates inconvenient navigation, but I don't expect that to last. Already, we have many new topics.

So far the transition has been a smooth one, but we'll continue to work out the bugs and  improve what I hope is an already superior community site.

Thanks for posting!

Thanks, jcastellese, this new site is wonderful and you guys are doing a great job!

One question... On the main Your Talk page, what is the significance of the second column from the left? A few topics have emoticons, and I don't see a legend to explain the icons there. Enlighten me, please?

Thanks!

What is the signifigance of showing whether a person is online or not?  Is there a chat room feature I'm not seeing?  I also think the column of emoticons (re: MonroeMom's comment) should go.  For a lot of people, the fewer the columns, the less overwhelming.

MonroeMom:

The column you're referring to is intended (I believe) to imply the tone of the message. When you post a topic, or even a reply, there's a drop-down menu labeled 'Message icon:'. For example, on this reply, I've chosen the emoticon named 'Sad'.

Not many people (including myself) have used this feature, so the message index doesn't have much variety. Maybe this isn't a necessary feature (like MomEm said)--something to think about.

MomEm, daniels11435:

It's true; we don't have a chat room. It was brought up during development, but (and this is just my opinion) it would seem to disrupt the forum conversation, as those in the chat room might discuss topics and anyone not present (especially those who wouldn't be able to use chat rooms at work  :'() might miss something. For example, if there was a heated topic, and the protagonist and antagonist were both online, they might get all their discussion out in a chat room and the forum topic would sit idle.

Then again, it's something to consider again, and I'll make sure to mention that people were calling for it.

Another benefit of knowing if someone is online? You can send private messages and know that the person should get it right away.

I've removed the Message Icon column from the main listing. You can still choose an icon for your messages that will appear before the subject when viewing the interior of the message.

Thanks for your input!

Another quick update and explanation:

When you view your own forum profile (by clicking the Profile link at the top of the forum), you see your own email address. However, anyone else who views your profile will see hidden in place of your email address.

Because this has caused some confusion, I've added a note that explains it on the profile.

Only the profile owner (when logged in) and administrators can view email addresses.

Hello,
I was checking the old forum and I noticed on the Ever-Changing Monroe topic that there are still posts being made in the old forum. The last dated entry was for 25 June, 2007 and going back to when the new forum started. (unsure of date) I Just thought that I would let you know.
Also, after reading some of the entries, maybe you could consider adding a spell checker.
Thank you.

Edit: The problem of posts on the old forum has been solved. Registration was still being allowed, so people who registered since the forum was made read-only were able to post. This has been corrected. Thanks for the heads up.

Jack Kelly or administrator, you might want to cut and paste those comments in the corresponding topic.

Also, I think removing the message icon from the main listing was a good idea.

Another question for the administrator-
Do you have a quick primer on how to participate?  Some people who might want to participate but are newer to using computers for this purpose could use an easy explanation of 'how-to' tips.

And as far as streamlining, what about removing some of the options when you are posting messages?  For example, subscript and superscpript?  Inserting images?  Insert code?  Teletype?

I would love to see a spell checker and grammer checker.  Some posts without any punctuation or capitals are very difficult to make it through.

Keep up the good work!

Title: Re: Welcome to Your Talk! Get started here.
Post by: jcastellese on June 29, 2007, 03:02:54 PM
I did some testing and found that users are able to remove a topic if they started it, even if it has replies. This would appear to be the explanation.

I've disabled this feature. You may still delete your responses or topics with no replies, but once someone else has commented, you may not remove the entire thread (though you could still edit the content of your comments).

Thanks for the help ironing this out.

Why indicate whether a person is a “New Talker” or an “Active Talker”?

I would think someone could figure that out just by looking at the number of posts tabulated near the authors’ name.

Perhaps you could provide reporter tags to your employees when they’re fishing for contributions to a story (much like your “administrator” tags)

While reading the New Restaurants thread I saw an advertisement at the bottom of the thread that took me aback.

If this is supposed to be a family oriented/ PG rated site, then how come you have this as one of your advertisers?

No, this is NOT a website for cheap automotive or mechanical lubrication.  This link takes you to a product - the "Tantus Silicone".

I think the only answer to your question is, 'for fun.' Custom titles based on post count is a feature offered by this software. I guess the only other advantage is that it gives visitors a quick idea of who the regulars are. Suggestions for the theme of our titles are welcome.

AttilatheHoney:

We have some control over the national advertising like that you see at the bottom of each of the forum pages, but once in a while, an inappropriate one slips through and we have to go specifically select it in our preferences at the ad service. I assure you that this advertiser is not a direct client, but a third-party ad served by an unpredictable process. We'll continue to try to minimize this kind of content--thanks for bringing it to our attention.

You can change / upload your avatar by clicking the Profile (http://www.monroetalks.com/forum/index.php?action=profile) link toward the top of any forum page, then click Forum Profile Information on the left menu. I have a suggestion for the Web site. The sides are blank so I thought if the Subject Titles were listed on a side, viewer can see is a subject was already addressed and not have a double posting. Also, the listing could be used as quick links to the page the Subject is on. As the pages continue to get bigger. Also, Is a Spell Checker in the works? Keep up the great work.

Hi John!

I've been having a non-public conversation using the email function on this site.  It works great, except...  When I click on the "outbox" button, a screen pops up that says I have no sent messages.  I suppose that it is possible that I'm doing something wrong, but I have a Chertoff-esque "gut feeling" that the message is just not there.

One more thing.  When you click onto a blog post from the "Latest Five," you can't see the name of the person who posted the message.  This is a problem for the blogs that have more than one author.

Thanks!

When you try to edit a post on monroetalks, the bold/italics/etc. buttons do not reappear.  So, I have not been able to italicize in the edit function.

Hi Mike,

Saving Sent Messages: At the moment, the system is set to only save sent messages when they are marked to be saved. At the bottom of the page where you write your message, you'll see a checkbox labeled 'Save a copy in my outbox.' If that's checked, the message will be saved. I'll look in to the possibility of having this checked by default.

edit: Followup! I've made a change that should have the 'Save a copy in my outbox' checkbox checked by default, so unless you uncheck it, your sent messages will now be saved.

Blog Latest Five: Work on all of the blog and forum feeds is under consideration. I'll add the author name to the list of possible display fields, but in all but a couple cases, the blogs are single-author affairs.

BBcode in Post Editing: I'll see what I can do about getting the RTF (Rich Text Formating) interface on the Edit Post form. In the meantime, I believe long-hand BBcode and simple HTML will still work. Here's a couple quick tips for how to do that.

Code: [Select]

For bold text:
[b]bold text[/b] (BBcode) or <b>bold text</b> (HTML)

For italic text:
[i]italic text[/i] (BBcode) or <i>italic text</i> (HTML)

Hope that helps! I'll see about the changes as soon as I can.

-John

I have noticed that when I return to a page that I left a message at to read new replies, I need to refresh the page once again after it loads. This is on MS IE V6.0.

Don't know if there is a refresh you can add, but it would help. This happens even when I return to the "Your Talk" page using the link above. I always have to refresh after it loads.

UPDATE Just for giggles I clicked the link to this thread and went to view my comment, it wasn't there - so I refreshed and it showed up.

www.BarackObama.com:

I might be mistaken, but I think this has to do with your browser settings. IE 6.0, I believe, is not quite as sophisticated as the current version (7.0), but if you want to check for new content whenever loading a page, you can do so in IE 6.0 like this:

Tools menu >> Internet Options >> General tab, click Settings under Temporary Internet Files

You'll see a number of options for caching pages. If you don't have space/speed issues with your machine, I would recommend setting it to always check for updates to a page.

If this doesn't solve it or causes other problems, let me know. Adding a forced recache of the page could cause performance issues for other users, but I'll look into it if necessary.

Hi, Administrators. I'm pretty sure I've seen this request somewhere else, so, sorry for a repeat--but is there any way you can divide General Discussion into sub-groups, please? MonroeTalks.com is so successful (well done you!!) and so many new posts come in that it's getting unwieldy having all of the topics lumped together.

We definitely need a Religion category, one for US Government, Local Government, Nostalgia, Local Business, and so on. Any plans for this?

Thanks.

I don't think anyone from MEN responded to this, at least I'm not seeing it on this forum.  I believe the 24-hour registration references the fact that you must go to your email within 24 hours and follow the link in the MEN message to activate your request to join the forum.  Once you've done that, you're officially part of Monroe Talks.

Hello,

I tried posting a picture on one of the threads and was unable to do so.  I clicked on the Insert Image Icon, the brackets came up but I was unable to insert the picture from my file. (http://)

Did I miss a step? Did I do something wrong? Or is it just a glitch?. Is there a “How To” page that I can look at? If not, maybe that could be considered?
Thank you. Keep up the great job your doing.

The M.E.N. filter has gone crazy.

Any word that contains the three letters that are a synonym for buttocks/ derriere/ donkey/ a stupid, foolish, or stubborn person has been affected.

I don’t find the word objectionable and doubt the average person would either but if you must impose your morality then at least allow the those three letters to remain in other unrelated words.

Associate and classroom come to mind right now but I’m sure there are more.

How ignorant that your software cannot differentiate or perhaps a prude is in control.

Other than the filter I think the forum is fantastic!

The core software for both the MonroeTalks forums and ProBoards (http://www.proboards.com) is what's called "open source", and anyone who wants to can contribute. Sooo ... quite honestly, if you, FrenchFry, think you can help, you're more than welcome to. I'm sure the gang over at ProBoards could point you to where the core project is available. 8)

I’ll leave the software design to someone that knows what they are doing but why use it at all?
Perhaps you are the responsible party since you seem to know a lot about which software they use but my intention was not to offend, my intention was to point out what was happening in case someone was sleeping at the controls. (My first inclination was to say in case someone had their head up their ***)
A/s/sistance, a/s/sume, cla/ss, as/sociate and many others have been chopped by the filter (I’m trying to sneak past the filter)
My analogy is that if I had a mechanic that couldn’t fix my car then I wouldn’t use that mechanic.
If the software cannot do what is intended then they should not use that software.
Chopping off all words containing those offensive three letters is akin to having something stolen at a party and since the perpetrator is unknown…everybody gets locked up to ensure the guilty party doesn’t get away.
The policy is asinine.
You know what…this subject is too trivial to pursue.
You’ve been notified, you’ve heard my objection…..we’ll leave it at that.

My goodness, which way to the coffeepot, eh? ;)

I know a lot about this software simply because I've administrated a forum over on ProBoards for a few years now.

I doubt it's a "policy" of the admins here, but you're right, it is trivial. And as a programmer of other projects, I can honestly say it's impossible to please everyone. And it's certainly nothing to become angry or abusive about.

Sure hope your day gets better ...

Oops! You're right. Recently, I changed the filter and didn't anticipate how severe it would be. I'll fix that immediately. We're not 'sleeping at the controls,' but we do have a great deal to work on lately. We appreciate your input and your continued patience.

Edit: This has been changed. Please let me know if you see any other undesirable effect. Finding the balance between pleasing those who want certain words made invisible without mutilating valid words has been difficult.

FrenchFry, I've been practicing that accent for years, just-in-case. ;)

My "let's see if you can do better" was a bonafide suggestion, and I apologize if it came across as sarcasm. This stuff is difficult to create, and more eyes can be so much better for the development of it. Me, I'm headed into the development of recipe software as I've yet to find any I really like.

I hope your headache gets better! What's that? It has a name?? "LunaPierCo ..." Oh ... gotcha ... 8)

Does it mean a member has a new identity and has abandoned the old one when all the information next to their name is replaced with “guest”?
Title: Re: Welcome to Your Talk! Get started here.
Post by: Administration on August 07, 2007, 07:48:58 AM
I'm going to correct it, but right now, 'guest' replaces the name on posts of a user whose account has been deleted. In the future, the name of a deleted account should be retained on posts.
Title: Re: Welcome to Your Talk! Get started here.
Post by: Frenchfry on August 07, 2007, 11:05:17 AM
I would imagine that the only reason an account would be deleted is if a person had their user name changed because why else bother? (I’d just let the name languish into obscurity.) I like that the old posts are no longer changed to the new name. So now the mystery begins as to which user Crysti has become. It kind of adds a new dimension.
Thank you.

I would like for Monroe Evening News to continue to moderate this forum as necessary to be a COMMUNITY forum (which does allow 13 year olds to register).   As stated in the terms of service, you agree not to post content that is offensive to the Monroe community.

Yes we have free speech, so go yell "fire" in a cornfield not in a theater.  Put your dirty jokes and inappropriate pictures on Craiglist and spare this COMMUNITY forum.

I think some would like the forums turned into an extension of their church to reflect their values and desires but my poll has indicated a clear majority does not find my jokes to be offensive.
Perhaps those offended should see if their church offers a site more in line with their views because I see this forum as the real world and there are many things that could easily be deemed inappropriate for children.

Also from the terms of service "If you cannot agree with these rules, please do not use the Website. "

23 votes when there are 900+ members isn't exactly a major victory.  More people bothered to vote in the BMX poll!

As long as MEN keeps moderating, all is good.  Obviously what they are removing is in violation of the terms of service.  Continually posting items with anticipation of their removal is just attention seeking behavior.

Yes lets move on.

Hi you all:

I live 2100 miles North West of you, so when I log on each day there are a lot of new posts for that day, to read. So I have some thing to entertain me while I have my coffee. I found your posts one day, when I was checking the MEM to see if there was any thing that would be of interest when I come back in the summer. Now I read your post each day to see who will get mad at some one that day. But most times find some posts that are fun, informative and entertaining.

I spent June and July in Lambertville this year and could not find a good hot dog in the Toledo area, should have gone to Monroe. 50 years ago Rudy’s was the only good hot dog. My taste has changed or there hot dogs have.

Posters keep up the good work, because I need some thing to do, while I drank my coffee each day.

Also if you English Teachers out there find mistakes in this post blame it on Microsoft Word. I was a Bedford High drop out. But Word should be able to fix that lack of schooling.
A PS
One of the things that I can remember about Monroe is I got married there 49 years ago.

Is there anywhere we (the public) can find some stats....   I see we are just about to break our fist thousand on numer of members...

and I have noticed we are passing by about 1000 posts every 3 or 4 days....   how long did it take for the first thousand????

I just think some of this would be interesting.

You can find public stats here ([url]http://www.monroetalks.com/forum/index.php?action=stats[/url]).

Thanks, I had actually viewed them last night after seeing the link on another thread...   I was amazed at some of the stats...   also disappointed that several seem to be skewed because they appear to be tied to the overall run of the beta testing, not just the public use time....

The one that floored me was that you keep of "logged on time" of something like that....   I have a cable connection, so I log on in the am, open other windows and do my work....   apparently, the system senses that I am online all that time....   how about a timeout after maybe 10 or 20 minutes of no activity....    most any of my work sites kick me off if I just leave the window open and leave for over 30 minutes...

Just suggestions.  I am enjoying this.  I was really most curious about how long to get the first 100, then 200, etc. member...   same for posts....  they are rolling in now.

A great job overall to the MEN on this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't keep those kinds of milestone numbers specifically. The 10,000th post and 1,000th member both happened roughly 2 months after our public launch. I also remember the excitement surrounding our 500th post, which happened probably a week into the launch.

As for those stats including the beta testing numbers, that development phase only accounted for about 81 posts and 21 topics, so it's not skewing the numbers much.

Barring unforeseen events, the only restrictions placed on Personal Messages at this time are:

Maximum number of recipients allowed in a personal message. (10) and

Number of personal messages a user may send in an hour. (20)

If you're looking at hundreds of personal messages in your box, it might be a good idea to delete those you don't need, just in case, but, at least for now, it's not required.

Sorry for not answering before. Truth is, we've been crazy-busy! But I've done some investigation...

Here's how it works right now:

New Talker (0 posts required) - 1 star (no color change)
Active Talker (30 posts required) - 2 stars (no color change)
Elite Talker (75 posts required) - 3 stars (no color change)
Veteran Talker (100 posts required) - 4 stars
Super Talker (150 posts required) - 5 stars
Hero Talker (250 posts required) - 6 stars (Before today, Hero Talkers reverted back to the default text color--but now they will be Monroe Talks Green!)

Now, I see  that these might be out of date--we haven't reviewed them since launch. Any suggestions for colors, group names, and required posts to achieve a given role are welcome. I hope this clears it up.

I have the same problem. I put x's there and they stay, and I don't know why.

I already have a subscription so I don't appreciate having to opt out of the solicitation ad that blocks this site when I log in. If I'm already a subscriber----leave me alone !!!

I haven't had that happen but I use an ad blocker which may be enough to block it.

My ad blocker must not be good enough. I'll have to look into that.

Maybe it's not an ad blocker issue.  I tried logging in from my phone (which I've never bothered putting an ad blocker on) and I didn't get any issues.

Have you done something to block your cookies recently.  If so you may have to change your settings to allow cookies from this site...   that's how they know you've been here before and signed in as a member.
