Title: Johnny Rockets in monroe?
Post by: therethere76 on February 27, 2008, 06:05:12 PM
I just drove by the auto detailing place (near the tracks) on front st near the drive thru liquor store. There was a banner on the building that had the Johnny Rockets logo and the words "now hiring". Anyone know anything about this?

All I know is that place isn't all it's cracked up to be. There is one near work, just so so.

From their website:

Johnny Rockets is an international retro diner-style restaurant chain that provides the food and friendliness reminiscent of feel-good Americana. On June 6, 1986, the first Johnny Rockets opened on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, offering guests friendly service and great food in an atmosphere that is fun and nostalgic.

Every original Johnny Rockets restaurant boasts great-tasting food from a menu of all-American favorites including juicy hamburgers, hand-dipped shakes & malts and freshly-baked apple pie. Guests also enjoy an all-American diner look and feel, servers who know the secret behind getting ketchup out of the bottle, tabletop jukeboxes that belt out tunes for a nickel and authentic décor.

Johnny Rockets is the place where every Guest can enjoy all-American favorites served with a smile!

Just what we need another restaurant to compete with J's  :)

I have been to the one by Great Lakes Crossing's once. From what I remember, it was pretty standard 50s diner style setup. Food seemed good enough. I mean, I can't think of an 50s diner where I was blown away by the cuisine :)

They have the best milkshakes and fries, at least the ones in Atlanta do. However, as much as I love to eat there, the food *always* makes me have ... ummm... immediate and intense gastrointestinal distress!!!!  :-[

Actually Johnny Rockets are not bad.  I have ate at the one in Alantic City and the one in Nashville.  Both had good burgers, fries and shakes.   Just  have to look at their competition.  I think J's plac is safe.

I think they're overpriced for what you're getting.

I'd rather go to a Steak N Shake in all honesty.

Very cool!  I love that place!  Don't the servers sing and dance too?  We've been to 2 or 3 of them.  I really liked it!  And they make the little smiley face with the ketchup?  :D

I wasn't expecting fine dining, but it was equivilent (quality wise) to Red Robin or Applebees I think.

It's going in the old carpet center in Hampton Plaza on Telegraph.  Next to The pella store and Yaeger shoes.  It's been in the works for a long time.  Hopefully they continue to make progress and get it open soon!

I like Johnny Rockets.  It is a fun place to eat. They play lots of old music and on some cue, the wait staff comes out and sings a song and dances.  We went to the one at Cedar Point and the one in Perrysburg at Levis Commons.  The kids love it.  The peanut butter shakes are to die for...yum.

I didn't think so either b/c my daughter was at Dolce Vita and one of the owners approached her and told her to see his wife about a job there. So I'm thinking...... he's not the only owner. Because when she told me about it..... I knew immediately who the other owner was... knew him since I was a girl scout!

i normally dont drink shakes or stuff like that too often...im a pop kind of guy...but what actually constitutes a bad shake??

butt too big??

boobs moving way too fast from side to side and look silly?

belly jumpin up n down as she walks??

all of the above??

but really what does make a shake bad??
Title: Re: Johnny Rockets in monroe?

Seriously, a bad shake is one that is too runny (or milky) and not ice cold. I have gotten quite a few of those, and they are nasty. :P

That, or when you taste other flavors in your shake that are not to be there.  Example tasting strawberry in a chocaolate.

Johnny Rockets to open in June
by Dean Cousino , last modified May 16. 2008 11:13AM
Two large neon signs for a Johnny Rockets eatery in Hampton Plaza have been approved, with the restaurant expected to open around June 1, local officials say.

The Frenchtown Township Zoning Board of Appeals granted two variances to the business Wednesday night, paving the way for the old-fashioned diner to open soon, said Clarence King, township building official.

"They were cutting the sign issue pretty close," Mr. King said Thursday. "They're not that far off. ... A couple weeks will do it."

Scott Smith from Harmon Signs of Toledo sought permission to place two 6-foot-tall neon signs on the outside of the building at 1261 N. Telegraph Rd. One of the signs will face N. Telegraph and the other will face Holiday Blvd. In addition, seven smaller wall signs were okayed that will advertise hamburgers, fries, shakes, malts, pie, chili and soda. The township ordinance limits the number of outdoor signs and neon lettering and also restricts new restaurants to two wall signs outside, Mr. King said.

He said the electrical, mechanical and interior framing work is finished, but final inspections inside have not been made.

The restaurant will have 2,985 square feet for the dining area plus another 300 square feet for a corporate office, he said. There will be seating for 94 people inside and 24 people outside the building.

The restaurant has an oldies decorating theme from the 1950s and '60s and will have a juke box inside, he said. James Thompson of Monroe is the owner.

Supervisor James McDevitt said construction has progressed well and the business has attracted some interest from people with whom he has spoken.

"There's been some excitement about it," Mr. McDevitt said Thursday. "For the first few months, it will probably be a pretty busy place."

The restaurant is one of more than 200 outlets around the nation. The nearest Johnny Rockets to Monroe are in Detroit and Perrysburg, Ohio.

Yeah, like that RolyPoly sandwich place. I really liked some of their wraps. Very interesting combinations of foods!! But..... NOT very "Monroe-ish." I think it lasted maybe a year?

I liked RolyPoly too. There was one wrap with chicken and sliced avacado on it that I really liked alot!

I think Johnny Rockets will last longer, because it is "the all american theme".  It's something Monroeites can relate to.
I know some of the people who do the "classic car" things in town. I was talking to one of them yesteday at work, and he said that they will be moving the classic car thing from Nortel to Johnny Rockets this summer.

They were in Hampton Plaza, right across from La-Z-Boy, near Quiznos.

And I miss Papa John's, too!! Great 'za!!

They have the best milkshakes and fries, at least the ones in Atlanta do. However, as much as I love to eat there, the food *always* makes me have ... ummm... immediate and intense gastrointestinal distress!!!!  :-[

I'm very glad you see I am not the only one with the Johnny Rockets problem.

Welcome to the boards Sexyshoes, The cicis info is on another thread.

They may be coming back under new management but who knows for sure.

Also when you put your posts in all caps, it's like shouting at everyone and not good etiquette

JOHNNY ROCKETS OPENS JUNE 10th.
Cici's was gross as Bapa's Coney Island. Bad quality food. Always cold food. That's why it closed.
Went there once and it was enough. Everyone I talked to agreed. When you go to a place once and it is bad, you just don't go back. So everyone goes when it's new, but if it's bad, you don't go back and then you see the phony signs.
Look at Gina's Kitchen. About a six weeks ago they put a sign saying some kind of leak or something, be open soon. Bad food, bad service people don't go back.

Well Jim, or looker, or whoever you want to pose as today, (Yes I outted you in the coney island thread, you really should learn to spell the fonz's Correcto MUNDO if you are going to use it as a catch phrase), To tell you the truth I did like Zorba's, but I did get bad food from there a couple of times myself, and like you said in the other thread, the potatoes tasted sour. VERY sour. But I went back other times and it was good, thats why I went back.

Now onto this post I have quoted above. You state that Cicis' was as gross as Bapa's Coney Island. Now I haven't been to Bapa's YET, but I do plan on going so I can't compare the food, but I do agree that Cici's wasn't very apealling to me. But you go on to say that it was ALWAYS cold, and then go on to say that you were only there once. I think it would be more appropriate to say "I was only there once and found the food cold"

Now on to the comment about Gina's kitchen. I only ate there twice myself. The first time was a FIASCO. I would go on and tell you about it but really, it's just too sad to put into words. Maybe another day. Went a second time, and it was barely better than the first, but only because we didn't get coffee spilled all over us and have to be moved to another table in the middle of our meal.

Point is, whoever you want to pretend to be, you should be more accurate in your food reviews, maybe people might want to listen to what you say a little more.

Lethal weapon, it seems you have a lethal tongue and mislabeled yourself and possibly should have named yourself the latter name. I really see no relevance of your mention of Zorba's. I went there only a couple of times years and years ago. I'm not a downtown kind of person. Parking is atrocious and it doesn't have much to offer, so I generally avoid it. There are much more convenient places that are not run down. I don't want to argue with anyone about that. Just look at it. Not appealing at all.

I am trying to understand your posing as and pretend to be remarks. You outed me on what thread? Perhaps you should paste it here for me to see if that were really so. I am seeing some really small minds on here. Only thing I can figure, with all your talk of people posting as numerous alter ego's, is, some of you,. only have this excuse in your bag of tricks. it is a very weak defense to all the sinister things that you are doing. It's the old point the finger at someone else? But the reality is that this is what you do?  Actually, I checked some of your recent posts and you brag how good you are at doing multiple personalities and demonstrate it. I didn't cut and paste, but I think I recall you saying you can do it with like a 15 second interval? Nice work deceiving folks on here. Then you come on here and accuse new people, namely me, of doing what you do.  Nice try, but how many people are you? I wouldn't embarrass myself, like you do as to be so presumptuous and make myself look like a fool as you just did with nothing to back it up and any proof to what you say.

Mr picky lethal tongue, as for CiCi's, when I went, the one time, I was informed by the group I was with that cold food was the norm. I tended to believe them since it was cold and even you agreed above.
As for Gina's, I truly enjoyed it better when it was Monroe Diner.

Correcto Mondo Mundo, excuse my faux pas. It's been a while since Happy Days. Which I wish you to have in the future without me.

You were stating at the time as Jim Richards that you didn't believe that Peace Train and Kitt could be the same person, which I proved was possible as I then went and made the other character "Just to make a point". But you wouldn't even acknowledge that it was possible. I gave up on trying to teach you anything then, as I will give up on your new persona now. Just one more to add to iggy land as someone else put it on these boards.

I don't have the time to keep making up new people. I have been here a short time and people are already pretty sure what they can expect of me, as they can you. Whomever you claim to be today.

I was stating? Really interesting Lethal. But not even in the ball park about me and your erroneous fantasy perception of reality. You did relate one accurate thing and explained it better than I. That is what is highlighted above. As I said earlier, and that you now readily admit, you are the character making up characters at your convenience. Your negative fantasy is misplaced. I am not Jim and have not a clue why you are making this wild claim.
Let me help you here. Your answer and proof is that you had a conversation with a Jim and that proves it's me? Now that makes perfect sense to anyone that is caught up in and suffering an episode of phantasmagoria.
I can see why you would persist in this behavior. The guy right before was egging you on and wishing you luck. Most times people do that type of behavior because they are making fun of you because you are mentally challenged. I have question for you. Can actually see this illusion in your mind perceiving something that does not really exist? But more importantly, I already asked you and you neglected to answer, on what basis do you accuse me of this fantasy you are having with Jim? With your name, I assumed you were a male. I'm confused why the fascination with this guy and why you insist on claiming I am him. You proved that two people were the same and seems to be your mission in life. Do you have these same fantasies when you meet people in person or is this odd behavior reserved only for here?
It would really be great if you answer this time to clear up the why of all of this. Otherwise, please lay of me and you can go on your merry way and project your fantasy on someone else, unless you wake up from your dream.

Iggy land? Is that sort of like the Disney World you were attempting to put on me?

I think it was the bantering back and forth between me and looker. I had to agree, (yes I CAN admit when I'm wrong, unlike a lot of other people on here, the names will be withheld to protect the ignorant) so I tried to get the thread back on topic.

Again with that being said.

I know they are trying to go for a 50's look but putting up the siding over the brick on the outside seemed kind of strange to me, but I guess that's to go along with their theme. I will be really interested in seeing some reviews from Griff on this one. LOL

That's how the ones in Atlanta look, too. I guess that's their standard building theme.

I just Googled it, and from the pics I see, even downtown shops get the "whitewashed" exterior look: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=%22johnny+rockets%22&gbv=2

Nothing great, but it's kind of fun.  The kids like it.  It's kind of a 50's place.  Burgers, fries and shakes are decent (and greasy).  The waiters/waitresses make smiley faces on a paper plate with ketchup when they serve the fries.

I was in there the other day while the staff was being trained. I also know the owners. Everything was very clean, organized, and ready for business. The staff seemed very upbeat and happy. Judging by what I know of the owners, everything will stay well organized, clean, happy, and upbeat. I plan on checking it out shortly after they open. BTW, I am not sure if it has been mentioned in this thread or not, but the first day of business is June 10th.

Hey! That's today. When I ate at Delta Coney Island this morning, I saw people moving about, but I don't think it had opened up yet. Maybe it's more of a lunch and dinner type place. It looks like a cute place. I saw the waiters had these cute looking sailor looking hats. Can't wait to try it out.

I was glad there was a bit of a line...otherwise it would have sucked as an opening day ALL THE WAY around it. I think I would have been very disappointed to see 2 people in a brand new FUN restaurant!

Me and 4 others were there at 12:45 took us about 5 minutes in line...... and we were there had a great time........ young people teens.... were all over the place enjoying themselves. So the Monroe effect seemed to be good at least yesterday.

There was one problem...... the teen scene doesn't know how to act in our town..... and proudly enough they weren't MHS kids ...
The workers had to dance (which is very fun and part of the ambiance) there was a table of 7 people cracking on them and saying things. All I have to say is good thing my daughter wasn't working or there would have been 7 people with rootbeer float in their face. I was PO'd and it wasn't even my daughter dancing (yet). Some teens should just be caged until they are 30 or something. UGH!

Though I agree with you that most children need to be caged until they're at least 25, I don't agree with the dancing crap.  Now that I know this there is no way you will be able to drag me there.   I remember being at Joe's Crabshack for the first time and I was so appalled that our waitress had to dance every hour I left her a $30 tip on a $40 bill.  It was clear that she did not want to participate and I felt sorry for her.  Thanks for the warning Pleasantville...

I'm not surprised they had a good opening day.  But I WAS shocked to see the whole restaurant full and people lined up out into the parkinglot waiting to get in at 5:20pm yesterday.  It looked like a ride at Cedar Point.

Were they giving away free food or something?  It'll be a while before I try it.  WAY too crowded yesterday.

To each his own. There's always one in every crowd. What's wrong with a little joy and laughter? Whoever works there, had to practice and knew exactly what their job entails. The new place sounds like a lot of fun! As long as they don't make me dance. Hehe. If it's half as fun as the one on Melrose st. in California, it will be a smash hit. If they're lined up out the door, it sounds like it already is a big hit.

I don't know that I agree with the term "Monroe effect" inasmuch as anywhere USA, if there is a new place that is known for being fun and having quality food, their expectations are to expect people to be lined up. There have been many, many restaurants that have opened in this town that never had a line out the door like that. They could only wish. This place is truly NEW! Not just a new name on an OLD place that's trying to act new. Most of what I would call the "Monroe effect is the old slap a on a new name and make believe it's new. Shorten the menu or change the names of the menu items, jack up the prices, giving you less for more money and play make believe that it's new and improved when they are actually the same old thing using all the same old stuff.

Johnny Rockets staff were in there daily for quite some time doing training, etc. to make certain that the place is run properly, professionally and up to company standards. This is a REAL place, run professionally.

How many restaurants in Monroe have a REAL web site that gives you a FREE HAMBURGER just for signing up? They even have an ingredients list, allergen information, menu, gift cards, etc.
I cut and pasted some things.
If you go to  http://www.johnnyrockets.com/index2.php  you can sign up to get emails with coupons for their yummy hamburgers. They cater to kids, Rockets Rocket Kids...... celebrate your birthday at Johnny Rockets!
Kids 10 and under will enjoy a delicious Johnny Rockets kids meal and a sundae for dessert. You're even welcome to bring in your own birthday cake, and Johnny Rockets will cut the cake for no additional charge.
It wouldn't be a party without the FUN! So, each child will receive the following:
Kids activity book & crayons    Johnny Rockets party favor     Party hat

It sounds to me that the majority welcome Johnny Rockets and it will be a great addition the Monroe landscape.
If everyone signs up for their email club and gets the free hamburger, that joint is really gonna be rockin!

I think the performance part of the job would be addressed in the interview process.  If anyone is uncomfortable with it, then this would not be the job for them. I know my daughter would love to do it, she enjoys performing (drama and singing...etc.).  She did not get out early enough to put in her application though.

I never said I've had a hard time finding a date, just one that can keep up with certain desires that I have.  Oh, and I've dated single moms, those have't worked out too well.  And from what I've seen they're not as loving as they're hyped to be....

I'm 27 and I'm pretty particular.  The only time I dance is when I'm way too intoxicated to know better.  For those of you who know me, this is when "The Dog" comes out.  I usually spending the next 3 weeks in a sober guilt trip because I made such a fool of myself.  I've discussed this in other threads.  I don't have fun; I enjoy myself.

If your kid loves to entertain, tell her to join the Monroe theater group.  I'm sure they would love to have someone who is young and enthusiastic.  As someone said before, they took the job so they know that they have to dance AND may be heckeled.  I personally don't feel it's right to heckle people since I feel embarrassed for them....

Well we braved the crowds to eat there today.

All in all it was good.  We knew what we were going for, a hamburger and fries (or onion rings for my hubby).  So no surprises there.
The atmosphere is "cute" and does ring of an era long gone.  The food was just what is was.  Our waitress was pleasant and upset when my order was a bit messed up.  But let's face it, it is to be expected right now.  She was relieved it wasn't a big deal to me.  So I would assume the staff is overwhelmed right now.
I must say I was a bit taken aback on the pricing though, to me it is a bit much for what you get.  But I assume you are paying for atmosphere.  (LOL).
(I am ready to pay for atmosphere at say, Andiamos but a 50's diner......?????)  I do wish them well, hopefully they will find "their" crowd and will prosper.

Sunday night we ate at JR's.  Home for about an hour, let's just say we were rocketing.
Talked with a neighbor, who also had the same propulsion effect from their food.
No dancing when we were there.. A bit shocked at the prices... wow...high
I must say I hope it does well, for the investors, the kids working there.. but I won't go back. I don't need to spend $25.00 and be sick for two days, cramping and having horrible stomach pain.
The floor where they cook, piled with fries, wrappers, and God knows what else; that tracks through the place.  We didn't have napkins in our holder thing.. Hamburgers came out first, we waited for our fries... Waitress brought over two shakes, she didn't know if they went to our table or not.
Some guy that works there came out and lingered and hung out with the other kids; just weird.
I will take my 25.00 bucks and eat somewhere else in Monroe, where I know I won't get sick... If you want a great meal, good service, and you don't feel rushed, or ripped off, absolutely go to Senior Cactus -- great food, much better than JR's.  I don't even consider getting sick from their food, or that what I pay for wasn't worth it - always a good meal and service at Senior Cactus.

I have not been to the JR in Monroe, but the very same thing has happened to me each and every time I've eaten at the ones in Atlanta. There must be an ingredient they use that affects some people that way. Sorry you went through that, I feel your pain!! But thanks for posting. I was going to try them again just to see....

Same thing with my stepdaughter. She would be good for the job too.
Give it a couple months, maybe some of the help will tire of it and leave.

I went there a few days ago. Place was packed, really loud due to the echoing. The food was pretty expensive considering what you got (12 bucks for a regular burger, some fries, and a shake?). My friend's salad (6 bucks?) was just lettuce and cheese due to the tomato scare. But still, a 3 ingredient salad? What's the profit margin on that, 400%?

I was hoping for something like a Steak & Shake (cheap food, not bad, open late), but this place is just kind of a novelty thing.

My experience has been positive. Had the double burgers on our trip. Could have done just as well with the single. We were stuffed! Cute place and really nice atmosphere.

We had two Double burgers loaded, chili cheese fries & a Mocha Fudge Malt. All very tasty and satisfying. Also had a coupon for any free burger of same value off the internet and our bill was about $15.

Johnny Rockets have a proven track record, are run professionally and their popularity is high. They seem to make it everywhere they go, so time will tell what happens in Monroe.

yes time will tell...but monroe dont usually take kindly to new businesses it seems. especially if its over priced as they say this place is. i probably wont go there at all.

Took the family there on Wed and can say for sure we will never go back. I spent $40 had terrible waitress and my burger was way over done. They did dance but they all looked like a gun was being held to they're head to do it. Once is enough for me.
I did notice the put a JR's in down at the Franklin Park Mall. The place was empty even this weekend with all the shoppers out getting there deals.

Stick with a pizza, with all the toppings (thin crust), healthier.
