Smoking or Non Smoking
« on: November 17, 2008, 06:27:08 AM »

Las Vegas, has changed it's position on smoking in the casinos. With the drop in visitors they are looking for anything that might bring the gamblers back. They voted last week to end the ban.
Toledo Ohio has also started back-tracking on the ban. They are looking for loop holes that allow smoking in certain bars and restaurants.

Funny how lost of revenue, can cause a change in what we see as a moral obligation.

Do you agree with a relaxation of the smoking ban?

I do not smoke. I quit a few years ago. I refused to pay $3.50 a pack. Others smoking doesn't really bother me as long as I'm in a open area.

I love the non-smoking bars, but of course I don't smoke.  I think the ban in toledo is tough for bar owners, because Michigan is so close, people can just hop on over and smoke the night away.  If all the surrounding states were non, they'd have no choice, and probably return to their hometown bars.

Who give's anyone the right to tell a bar owner what they can and can't do.  I would agree if it was something illegal but smoking is not.

I would agree with you there, especially for privately owned bars and restaurants, they should be able to choose what they want, smoking or non-smoking.

Las Vegas has always allowed smoking in the casinos, with the exception of some poker rooms.  There have been no recent changes to their laws.  They did ban smoking in all restaurants a couple of years ago and that ban remains in place.

Atlantic City recently rescinded a casino smoking ban for one year in an attempt to increase revenues.

I would agree with you there, especially for privately owned bars and restaurants, they should be able to choose what they want, smoking or non-smoking.

I am in favor of smoking bans.  Restaurants should not be allowed to subject patrons to poison gases any more than they should be allowed to serve poison or spoiled food.  Most states now ban smoking, with Michagan and a few southern states as the only holdouts.  Michigan will come around soon, I'm sure.

I don't smoke and only go to restaurants that are smoke free, but I don't agree on a law that requires it to be smoke free. Owners should be able to say what kind of an environment they want to offer. If I choose to go to a restaurant or bar that allows smoking then I have made a choice to suffer the consequences.

I’m a non-smoker and can’t stand leaving establishments smelling like an ashtray but I’m on the fence on smoking bans.

I no longer smoke, but I don't think restaurants--or especially bars--should be required to be smoke free.

I think it's a good idea, I thought the law was kind of foolish to begin with...I say leave it up the the bar or restaurant owner, if he or she wants it to be smoke free or not, then it's only a matter of a personal choice if you wish to be a patron of the establishment or not.  It's all about being free to make the choice you want and that shouldn't be dictated by law.

Smoke if ya got 'em...

likewise...the government should keep their noses out of other peoples businesses.

i wouldnt mind restaurants non smoking though thats no big deal to me...but bars and private clubs should be left alone to do as the owner chooses.

I think that most bars don't have the guts to go non smoking for fear of loosing too much business.  I'd support a non-smoking bar even if I was the only one there LOL!!  The non-smokers need to ban together if we want a non-smoking bar.

Murphy's was the only place in Toledo that was a non-smoking bar before the ban.  I think they did well because of the great restaurant and jazz offerings.  Had they been a run-of-the-mill bar, I doubt they would have done well.

As printed in the Las Vegas Sun news paper,, dated Sunday May 6 2007, Casino fight goes up in smoke.

Voters voted on a ban all indoors smoking in 2006 and it went into effect in Dec of that year.

Another article dated : Sat, Jun21,2008. This article tells how the Ban doesn't do what the sponsors had hope for.

OK, you are talking about old news.  Your first post stated that there was some recent change in the laws due to lack of visitors.

Las Vegas casinos have never imposed any type of smoking ban.  They claimed they were exempt from the indoor smoking ban and the state backed the casinos (as is always the case in Nevada).

It really gives me a nicer warmer feeling than knowing that there are people that want bars and restaurants  to keep people healthy.  Nothing really says "I LOVE BEING HEALTHY AND NOT BREATHING THAT NASTY SMOKE" more than watching some 300 pound broad choke down a greasy steak with diet coke, or wathing some guy throw back a shot of liquor as he grabs his car keys or hearing about some bloke that has spent his life savings at a casino and blows his brains out.  I am too much in favor or doing as you wish, and telling someone to f off if they dont like it.  If I had a bar, I would have put in bongs at every table.  If you dont like smoke or smoking, don't go into places that allow it or work someplace else.  No smoking in factories, yet they are filled with metal fumes or toxic chemicals.  The blond that dies her hair breathing in that fresh smell of ammonia.  People can be so friggin stupid.

Excellent point.  If we're going to ban smoking in bars and restaurants then we need to ban hair dying, perming, and whatever else they do in salons.  Some of those fumes have to be worse for you than cigarette smoke.  Oh I also forgot manicures and pedicures.  I'm sure that breathing in nail polish is really good for you.
