I ended a persons job because of a positive drug test.  He had drugs in his system, and was tested after he was injured on the job.  He claims he partied over Thanksgiving.  The level of the drug was higher and the doctor said that it had to have been ingested in the last 24 hours. 

The accident could have been a lot more serious had not another employee been paying attention and stopped the line. 

I said it earlier and I will say it again - I would rather fire 100 people than have to sit across from 1 persons family and say I am sorry for this accident - or worse.

Food Detectives on Food Network just did a show on this!! They said you can actually test postive, but you need to eat a whole lot of poppy seeds!!

I think drug test have come a long way in concerns to poppy seeds.  Also - if you claim the results are from poppy seeds you should be able to re-test after a day and the poppy seed issue would not be a factor.   


Drug test have come a long way in the last so many years.  I know there are levels of tests that can be done that can detect more or little depending on what is ordered.

I've heard that some medicines can also cause a false positive, such as ibuprofen / thc and amoxicillin / cocaine, and I am curious, are tests now more able to detect the difference?

Always keep track of what you're taking.  I don't think they can ask you up front, but if there is a positive result it may explain it.

Actually, when our employees go for the initial hair follicle test they are asked if they are taking any medication of any kind.   There have been results that have come back showing a positive - it is usually for a pain medicine.  If the employee can show a valid doctor prescription then the result will be noted as to why it is positive.    We have been told that the hair follicles will not pick up any over the counter medicine - and I have never had one come back that the person said it was from an OTC med.

I can do more research on the drug testings over the next few days.   I will let you know what I find out - I will even ask about the poppy seeds with "now a day" tests.

The hair drug test shows drug use up to 90 days ago so it’s hardly indicative of anyone being under the influence on the job.
