a summer Christmas sure would make travel easier!  the winter traditions of Christmas are so ingrained that it would be a little weird to make the switch, but the aussies could enjoy a white Christmas for a change.

Everyone could just start celebrating Yule.  Of course that means Litha would get screwed with.....

Its pretty weird reading responses to questions that no longer exist in the thread...but I did it!

Anywhoo...I've known that Jesus was not born in December since I was a child, its another reason why I am so disinfranchised with it more and more every year. Since its become so commercial I personally have no reason to participate any longer, that and the fact that I dont have little ones to appease.....its not his birthday so I'm not stressing about December 25th anymore. I acknowledge and celebrate his death (which is what we are suppose to do).

That is the true foundation of Christianity, the observance of the crucifixion and resurrection...Not his birth, that came later to fill in for the pagan festivals that everyone else were celebrating long before Christ came along.

I still believe that the winter solstice should be a time of celebration, not much can be done outside because of the cold and people tend to get depressed and lonely.(I really like Shaggy's idea of celebrating Yule, I would love nothing better than to enjoy a big bonfire with friends and family and feast and drink for 12 days!)

Even if you can't stand the commercialization of it all, you can't blame all the different stores for wanting to be the one you buy your gifts from, I think that here in America most of all Christmas is a holiday for children and family and friends to get together and be happy.  For me Jesus really isn't the reason for the season, he's an excuse.

I worked out a sky chart for June 17th 2 BC looking west from Baghdad, one of the most advanced cities of it's time and home to very knowledgeable astronomers and astrologers.  In it you can see the very close conjunction of Jupiter and Venus, two of the most important objects in the Ancient world astronomically speaking...And by watching it over a course of several days, as the planets set in the sky they would lead anyone following them in the direction of Bethlehem.  I'm not saying this is finite proof or anything of the sort, but it is very interesting.  Anyway it just let me play around with my toys...

I can't tell where Venus is, but...

Did you scroll the image over...?  Basically Jupiter and Venus are a single object when viewing with the naked eye(that is the setting I used), one of the reasons I think they would have thought it had a special significance.  Here is a 50x zoom of the same night sky at the same time.  The arrow points at Venus, with Jupiter and it's four big Moons aligned above. A conjunction of this sort would have got most peoples attention, even if they were common folk with no knowledge of astronomy or astrology, they would have seen the two merge as one over the passage of a few days.

Oh, and there are a few more things to add to the big picture of this night sky at the same time there was also a full Moon and Mercury was making one of it's rare appearances...Now that's a lot of cosmic activity for a time when astrology was of major importance.  It does make one think...

Does anyone know anything about astrology...?

Venus and Jupiter are in Leo, Mercury and Mars are in Cancer, the Sun is in Gemini, Saturn is in Taurus and the Moon is in Sagittarius...Those are the predominant astrological objects of the ancient world, but I have no idea what it would mean or how to decipher it...This has just got me thinking and I want to know more.

I know a little astrology, it's been a hobby of mine for years.  I will try to run this through my software and see what kind of meaning it gives.  I have no idea if my software goes back that far or not.

Ahhh...scroll over...and amazing things can be seen! thanks for giving detailed instructions to me and my simpleton ways ;) I must have been too busy looking for Venus that I ignored the scroll bar :-[
That would be impressive to see.

Cool, Rivers, you're going to check on that and you have an idea of what to look for. I did a quick google search and I have no knowledge to make sense of much of what I did come up with. The one interesting tid-bit I came across was George Bush Jr was born with Venus in Leo, but I doubt that has any bearing here.

my software only goes back to the 1700's.  :-\

It would depend on how these planets are aligned to each other. Venus and Jupiter appear that they are conjunct.
It would be interesting if Mercury and Mars were also conjunct.

All I can do is interpet what a person born under these specifics would probably be like. (for what its worth)
A person born at a time when the sun is in Gemini and the moon is in Sagittarius would likely be a jovial person, and a good communicator. Most likely would like to travel a lot.
Mars in Cancer inclines toward passive-aggressiveness , as well as  a strong nurturing drive  Mercury in Cancer people communicate with feeling, conveying a sensitive, withdrawn, and thoughtful nature to the people they interact with.
Saturn in Taurus says that the person will not be wealthy, or have much in the way of material things.
