Perhaps a way to help the future.
« on: June 12, 2009, 04:50:20 PM »

In the need of sanity...I had to find a way to move from mourning to action. I hope somehow and someway we can change what has happened and find a way to help prevent it. Here are my thoughts...and then this is where I will leave the topic. It's just way too painful.

We need to find solutions.

1. A class where parents learn about pedophiles and the grooming process. Also, where they learn about the recidivism of sex offenders. I know most parents think it's a no brainer that we shouldn't bring our children around sex offenders...but, after working with the courts...you'd be surprised what skills some people are not born with. Plus, some parents want to believe people can change. We need them to know the facts about what risk they are taking by trusting someone possibly changed or was wrongly convicted "it was consentual" is such a popular response to someone convicted and on the sex offender list.

2. We need stricter laws of consequence. We need to ask ourselves why we have such a high population of sex offenders here. I bet this isn't just a coincidence. We also need to look up the judge who gave the sentences to both these sex offenders. Perhaps we shouldn't vote such judges in. When we as a community talk... they have to listen or they don't have a job!

3. Perhaps someone with the no how to get information could create a .org website that shows the convicted sex offenders, their sentences, and how long they actually had to serve, and the judges making the convictions/sentences so we can be aware of how lenient our town is on such convictions. I have seen some really sad outcomes. We really need information that is legit given to us as a community so we can know what to do to change the "good old boy" mentality in our town.

4. People who have children/grandchildren/etc need to be taught how to go to the Michigan sex offender list and set up on an email system that sends an email when a sex offender moves into the area...I receive 3 a week...scary huh? I do sign up for all parts of Monroe. http://www.mipsor.state.mi.us/PSORDisclaimer.aspx enter the code to say you agree and then sign up for the emails. This is straight from the state of Michigan.

5. When we meet new people...ask their first/last name...and guess what? There is another website that allows us to look up records. http://www.state.mi.us/mdoc/asp/otis2.asp

6. For all the people who want to do good in the community, help children... and have the ability to do so... check into C.A.S.A and volunteer. Second, ever thought of adopting a foster child? It's a great way to help future Nevaehs.

7. The children's court is the lowest funded ...what can we as a community do to change this? The children lack rights, the system is overloaded and departments underfunded, underemployed, etc that sets up cracks in our protection of children.

We need to quit focusing on the hate at her family etc and start figuring out how to take what happened to this baby girl and make sure we do what we can to stop it. Think about it...we can't change what has happened and we all came together...lets take this anger energy and put it to protect our children. Please, those who have an ability to do any of these helps... we need it.

Did I miss the part when they convicted one of those sex offenders of murdering Nevaeh?  Which one did it?

Why are we dwelling on the sex offender thing?

That's the truth.

TT,

Regardless if one of the RSOs that JB knew was involved with this or not, more than likely a SO of some type, whether or not they had made it to the "official" list was...

Even worse, this is a case where a parent KNOWINGLY upped the risks to their small child a thousandfold by knowingly exposing here to a lifestyle that included drugs, robbery, home invasion, and RSOs that the child substituted for her father.

Thank you Shawna, for your eloquent post.

I do think, though, that we need to continue to be quite hard on/vocal about the bio parents of this child because their actions DIRECTLY led to what happened to their daughter...

http://www.radkids.org

radKIDS® is dedicated to providing our children with a hands-on, activity-based physical skill development program empowering our children with options, not fear. radKIDS® provides our children with the instinctual options they need to recognize, avoid and if necessary respond to potential danger in their world today. radKIDS® has always believed, and it is further proved by the NCMEC study, that the first few seconds of a potentially violent encounter are critical. When a child is approached or grabbed, the response needs to be immediate, instinctual and absolute.

It's a great program and if there isn't one in your area, there is information on how you can start one in your community/school.

It teaches about all kinds of violence, from strangers to abuse in the home/family and abuse at school and how to react in different situations.

It does a lot of role play training. Teaching children the tricks predictors may use to try and lure them and how they should react to defend themselves.

radKIDS® is dedicated to providing communities and families the tools they need to teach and empower your children with realistic options in their own personal safety.

Good link SC! The laws are in place but the funding needs to be there too.

http://www.oprah.com/article/oprahshow/20090220-tows-adam-walsh-act

Help Get Funding for the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act
Adam Walsh

The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act was passed on July 25, 2006—20 years after Adam Walsh's abduction. The act established a National Sex Offender Registry law, but recent news reports reveal most states will not be in compliance with the law by the upcoming July 2009 deadline.

Act Now!

It's time to bail out our kids. Make your voice heard by imploring your senators and state representatives to comply with Adam's law and give it full funding.

Don't know what to write? Use our sample letter.

To contact your senator: Go to Senate.gov to find contact information for the senators in your state. Search for your senator by name or state by clicking the arrow from either drop-down menu. Contact information will be provided. To send an e-mail, click on Web Form below his or her name. E-mail your letter to make a difference.

To contact your state representative: Go to House.gov and click on Write Your Representative in the upper left-hand corner. Select your state from the drop-down menu, and enter your ZIP code, including the four-digit ZIP code extension. Contact information will be provided. To send an e-mail, click on Send a Message. On the state representative's page, click on E-mail the Congressman/Congresswoman, and e-mail your letter to make a difference. (continued at the above link)

As you can see, Oprah and John Walsh have made it pretty easy for us to let our legislators know that we want these laws funded.

You do NOT know for a fact whose "actions DIRECTLY led to what happend"... you are assuming or guessing...

but only the perp or perps really know for a "fact"...

Let the investigations and the legal system take it's course before you encourage any more vigalante justice...

In a past life did you by some chance lead a lynch mob ???

I agree that we do not know who is responsible for Nevaeh's death, but, the fact is, there are/were SO interacting with not only Nevaeh, but other children knowing it is against their parole conditions.  I put the responsibility first and foremost on the SO to monitor themselves and stay within the guidelines and conditions of their parole.

But, in other incidences it is known that SO's have been responsible for violating a child's innocence and harming them. It is for these reasons that I want to advocate for better management of SO's and laws to protect children who are not responsible for what SO's do.

Hi BigRed -

You are not "getting" what I am saying...

You are interpreting what I said literally....what I am saying is that the mother's laying on the couch and neglecting and endangering her daughter via her lifestyle upped the statistical ante considerably for something like this to happen...

This is obvious....

Where did I EVER advocate vigilante justice?  I NEVER have.

However, the last time I looked, I do live in the United States, and I do have freedom of speech.

Now, Booodicka's direct recent trheat to me does legally border on "actionable" speech, according to what the US Supreme Court has ruled, but I am choosing to let that go because I truly feel sorry for her...

We, as adults are allr esponsible for our actions.  JB's actions are directly related to what happened to her daughter. Period.

Oh, and I am a labor negotiator by trade...:D

I'm all for that by the proper officials...

but not by a group of citizens...

that is not justice...   it is a lynching...

I'm not sure what your occupation has to do with anything...

as to the rest...

I stated it once and that is the end of what I have to say about it...

all anyone has to do is go back and read your words...

they speak for themselves!!!

Oh, I thought that went without saying...I certainly believe the proper authorities are in place for monitoring, etc.  I am for advocating for laws, etc to be put in place.

Here's one way to help:

http://www.oprah.com/article/oprahshow/20090220-tows-adam-walsh-act/2
Thank you for spreading the word about this Shadow, it is important to get this in front of as many people as possible.  It made me sick to watch Oprah today. Adam Walsh explained that the law he helped create a few years ago will be no more in July of this year if something is not done NOW!
What makes me even sicker is the government has enough money to bail out all of these banks etc.. but not enough to keep our babies safe from harm!! Make your voice heard any way possible!

BRD,

Again, you are being literal...

You accused me of "heading a lynch mob somewhere in my past" or whatever...

....soooo, I corrected you and made a quasi-joke...

Nuance is not your forte, perhaps?
