Susan...

Just because the label states 'Made in Usa' don't mean it's sourced from domestic materials, it only means the final assembly was done on American soil.  If you use the website www.madeinusa.org you can further distill your intended purchases without label reading in store.  I keep the website on my favorites bar for quick reference.
Thanks Sidecar. I will use the site. I am amazed at the way, one part is China, another part Mexico but constructed in the USA

Magnavox, It was a gift from one of my friend.. I don't use mp3 or cell phones

I was asking, because I recently bought a couple of HDTV's and found that, evidently, none are made in the U.S.  Someone had told me that Vizio TV's were made in the U.S., but when I checked, I found that they are partially American-owned, but the TV's are made somewhere else.

I love computers and electronic gadgets (my latest is a Kindle, made in China, but awesome), but I'm batting .000 trying to find any of them made in the U.S.

I got one for ya.
As some of you know, I am into issues concerning military veterans. I was a member of one and I am a life member of another. Anyway, long story short.
The hats that you see veterans wear, with the post name, organization and usually has a lot of pins & medals attached... Those are also made in another country.

The agency I work for buy the hats and shirts made in Vietnam. They have the logos applied here in IL but the actual articles come from there. Our union has griped about it to no avail.

As a consumer, I'll buy the best item on the market. So will most everyone else.

But here's the other thing. Okay, so it's made in China. Let's use an Apple iPod as an example.

Apple is an American company. They hire American designers to design the ipod. They hire American engineers to engineer the iPod. They hire American marketers to market the ipod. They employ thousands of sales geeks to sell the ipod.

They send the ipod off to China to be made or whatever. For 12 bucks a unit. An ipod costs 300 to the consumer.

288 dollars of the ipod unit counts as American, whereas 12 bucks counts as Chinese. But it's still "made in China".

China makes a lot of things because it's absurdly cheap to make them there. They don't design anything. They don't market anything. They don't engineer anything. It's all us. We send them the blueprints and have them make our widgets for 40 cents a box. We then sell those widgets worldwide for 400 bucks a box.

From an email:

MADE IN THE USA !

In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else and perhaps even their job.

So, after reading this email, I think this lady is on the right track.

It may be a challenge, but let's get behind her!!

1.. My grandson likes Hershey's candy.  It is marked made in Mexico now.
I do not buy it any more.

My favorite toothpaste Colgate is made in Mexico now.
I have switched to Crest.
You have to read the labels on everything.

This past weekend I was at Kroger.
I needed 60W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets.
I was in the light bulb aisle and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off brand labeled, "Everyday Value."
I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price.
The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the
Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - the USA in a company in Cleveland , Ohio

So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here.

So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets....yep, you guessed it, Bounce cost more money and is made in Canada .
The Everyday Value brand was less money and MADE IN THE USA!
I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce I have been using for years and at almost half the price!

So my challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors!

If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others in your address book so we can all start buying American, one light bulb at a time!

Stop buying from China , Mexico , and other countries ...........

(We should have awakened a decade ago......)

Let's get with the program.... help our fellow Americans keep their jobs and create more jobs here in the U.S.A.

I'll buy whatever products are the best, regardless of country of origin.

Artificially limiting myself to sub-par purchases depending on what country they're from is stupid.

So USA made products are sub-par to you?

It's too early to tell the longevity but my USA made New Balance shoes appear flawless and were the most comfortable of all the shoes that store had in my size......I think I tried them all.

I think its wrong that our government buys all those Canadian made vehicles......it doesn't have to be an official protectionist policy but I think the person that authorized a foreign made vehicle purchase should be fired.

America needs to start making stuff again.

Heavily tax the stuff made by companies that moved their operations away from the USA.......that'll give them an incentive to come back.

I didn't say they were, but if there's a superior product from, say, Canada, Sweden, or China, I'm not going to buy the worse product just because it has a "Made in USA" sticker on it.

They should have no problem purchasing Honda Civics then.

Uh.

http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/IBQTable?_bm=y&-geo_id=&-ds_name=EC0731I1&-_lang=en

There's 471 rows of manufacturing data on that website. In short, 471,000 firms are generating trillions in receipts. We're making plenty of stuff.

The difference is most US companies realized that there isn't any money in making consumer-grade stuff like t-shirts. So, we shipped it off to Bangladesh.

That's called tariffs, and is highly protectionist, and also doesn't work in the long-term.

The "incentive" would backfire tremendously as many companies would simply shrug and relocate to Mexico or Canada.
