swimming the English Channel
22 July 2009, 2:20 pm

I thought my summer to-do-list seemed pretty interesting, but somehow I left “take a 13 hour swim across the English Channel” off of my list.

In 1983, I remember it was pretty exciting that *MY* cousin (ok, my cousin Mary’s husband) John Muenzer was swimming across Lake Erie to ...

Monroe County Fair Ride Deals
29 July 2009, 2:43 pm

For my kids, a big part of the fair is the rides.  We don’t do Cedar Point or carnivals, so we do attend the Monroe County Fair and to them it is a big deal.  Picking which day to attend depends a lot on the ride deals offered.  This is a summary of the info available [...]

tonight: birthday FUNdraiser
31 July 2009, 1:18 pm

I didn’t hear about this until too late last year, but tonight local girl Madison O’Neill is celebrating her birthday.

Super, huh?  Nice, right?  Lots of people are celebrating their birthdays today, not such important news.

 But Madison’s party is different.

Instead of h...

BFFs, how close are YOU?
1 August 2009, 9:35 am

My 5 year old has a best friend, ET.  My boys spent the morning at ET’s house and in the afternoon ET came to our house to swim.  Then ET went home.

After he left, my son comes downstairs and says “ET left his underwear here!”

And I say “Well put them in the dirty...

if you give a mouse a cookie (or a kid a pair of shoes…), mom ends up crying
17 August 2009, 8:00 pm

It’s that time of year where everyone has outgrown everything (there’s nothing like needing to buy 8 pairs of shoes at the same time to make your checkbook shed a tear).

And if you buy a kid a new pair of shoes, they’re going to need new socks too because the old ones look prett...

texting while driving
25 August 2009, 6:06 pm

I saw this British public service announcement on the news.  Graphic images, but all teen drivers (and those who ride with teen drivers) need to watch this.

And parents, be good role models and don’t text while driving.

Back to School
27 August 2009, 8:39 pm

Last fall, I decided to re-start my education and enrolled in a couple classes at Monroe County Community College.   I took spring semester off to have my baby, and now have started again this term.

It’s hard to be in a class.  To be old and be in class is even harder.  I was asked if

Drive In Theater
30 August 2009, 10:18 pm

Definitely an old-school thing to do, but the kids sure thought it was fun.  And the prices are definitely comparable to taking the kids to a regular theater (even a matinee).  Being able to bring in your own snacks was nice too (OK, shhhhhhh, I always bring in our own snacks but they’re...

Go to bed!  Or dance!  Its back to school!
31 August 2009, 10:01 am

It will be here soon, that first day of the school-year.

Have your kids start practicing their morning routines and timelines this week to ease the transition.

Moms, be sure to  prepare too by practicing for your first-day-of-school victory dance.

More back to school tips at PBS.org.  And moms,...

what will you do on 9/11?
1 September 2009, 11:42 am

The upcoming anniversary of the September 11 attacks is the first year for this date to be officially recognized as a day of service.

Signed by President Obama this past April, the National Day of Rememberance and Service marks the historic date and pays tribute to 9/11 victims and those who...
