And we thought Lake Erie was low!

Lake Sidney Lanier, metro Atlanta's main source of water, has about three months of storage left, according to state and federal officials.

That's three months before there's not enough water for more than 3 million metro Atlantans to take showers, flush their toilets and cook. Three months before there's not enough water in parts of the Chattahoochee River for power plants to make the steam necessary to generate electricity. Three months before part of the river runs dry.

"We've never experienced this situation before," state Environmental Protection Division Director Carol Couch said of the record-breaking drought and fast-falling lake.

In two weeks, Couch plans to give Gov. Sonny Perdue a list of options to further restrict water use by businesses and industries, along with an analysis of potential water savings and estimated job losses. Some exemptions to the state's ban on outdoor watering in north Georgia could end, including those applied to water-dependent businesses such as car washes, pressure washing companies and landscapers. Couch's staff is still working on the details.

She said she fully expects an economic hit if substantial rain doesn't fall soon and the emergency actions are taken.

the governor of GA has declared a state of emergency.
Atlanta needs a sustainable water plan for its growth, otherwise drought conditions will be the norm for everyday life.

How about the Army corps of engineers releasing a billion gallons of water per day to support some rare mussell downstream on the endangered list?
In addition, it is to help power some power plant in Florida...

A mussell, or even electricity is more important to our government than our own people.... I think I have seen it all now.

Last nights nightly news showed parts of New Orleans flooded by several feet of water again
This was from heavy rains.
Why not pump the excess water to Georgia? ;) ;) ;)

no...now we have to defend our water against brainiacs that want to water the desert, and everyone else who built unsustainable development. Half the time our lakes are only protected because of treaty with Canada if you ask me.

That treaty is The Great Lakes Compact and Mi has not signed on because of big Water users lobby. We as a state and people need to conserve our resource for the economic future of Mi. Our water will bring prosperity back to Mi if we keep it here and tell the Parched states out west and other areas " You want our water come and get it but bring your jobs and industry with you" Nothing live or runs without water!!!!!!!

Lived in Florida for 17 years and water is a big issue there. For instance water pressure in most areas is nowhere near what it is in the water rich midwest. If you didn't get up early enough then you are showering with a trickle from your pipes. Florida is draining their aquifer so fast even the Hurricanes can't replace the water fast enough and salt water is leeching in!!!! Lake Okeechobee is also at dangerously low levels. Around the World poor and rich nations are depleting water resources at an alarming rate. I am investing in companies that stand to profit from this next resource grab!!!!!

Oil can be replaced with other energy sources....... we know this. Water is dependent on nature and is renewable as long as we do not screw up nature. The way we are going it does not look good for water.

Perhaps we can recycle the beer induced urine and reconstitute into drinking water.
Just the portapotties at a single NASCAR event should supply enough to support the entire state of Florida's water needs for a week or two..
