Are you ready for flu season?
« Reply #15 on: October 04, 2009, 02:22:46 PM »

The H1N1 vaccine won’t be available to everyone for weeks. Here’s what you can do now.

The estimates are alarming: Public health experts say that because of the combination of swine flu and seasonal flu, as many as 20 percent of Boston residents will experience flu symptoms this fall and winter.

But there’s good news, too. Small quantities of swine flu (or H1N1) vaccine are set to reach Boston any day now, several weeks sooner than previously expected. And new research suggests that adults probably need just one dose of the vaccine (not two, as originally thought) to resist swine flu, meaning there may be more vaccine to go around. “The more people we can vaccinate early in the season, the better off we are as a city,” says Barbara Ferrer, executive director of the Boston Public Health Commission.

Still, until a larger supply becomes available over the coming weeks and months, the vaccine will only be offered to people at particular risk of getting sick or developing complications. Even if you can’t get an H1N1 shot for a while, Ferrer and others say simple habits can substantially reduce your chances of getting sick with swine or seasonal flu, or spreading flu to others if you do get sick.

Wash your hands. “This can have a very real impact on the spread of the virus,” says Dr. Richard Zane, vice chairman of emergency medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Clean your hands thoroughly several times a day. Lather up with soap and warm water for 20 seconds, roughly the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday,” says Dr. Snehal Shah, a pediatrician with the Boston Public Health Commission. If you don’t have access to a sink, hand sanitizer that contains at least 62 percent alcohol will provide similar protection, Zane says.

Cover your cough. Flu viruses are transmitted through the air by coughing, sneezing, or talking. If you need to cough or sneeze, cover your mouth with your hands (and then wash them) or cough into your elbow.

Stay home. If you develop flu symptoms -- a fever of at least 100 degrees, cough, aches, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhea -- stay at home, and “plan on staying home for four days or until your fever has been gone for 24 hours, whichever is longer,” Ferrer says. That’s fever-free without the aid of meds.

Get the vaccine if eligible. When the H1N1 vaccine is available, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that five groups get priority: pregnant women (who were especially vulnerable to complications during the spring outbreak); people who spend a lot of time with babies under 6 months (because these infants can’t get flu vaccines); health care and emergency workers; young people 6 months to 24 years of age (the age group hardest hit during the spring outbreak); and adults up to age 64 who have chronic health conditions like asthma or diabetes, which may increase the chance of complications. The elderly seem largely immune from H1N1.

Pay attention if pregnant. Pregnant women with flu symptoms should call their doctor immediately, says Dr. Laura Riley, medical director of labor and delivery at Massachusetts General Hospital. “The epidemiology thus far suggests that when pregnant women get influenza, they are more likely to have respiratory complications and be hospitalized,” she says.

Get a seasonal flu jab. While many of us can’t get a swine flu vaccine for a while, the seasonal flu shot is available now. Public health officials are urging people to get one; Mayor Tom Menino has offered Boston city employees two hours of paid time off to get the shot. “If you can protect yourself against one of the sets of viruses that are circulating, that will help you stay healthy,” Ferrer says, “and it will reduce the burden of illness that needs to be treated by our medical care providers.”

Skip the ER, unless . . . To prevent the illness’s spread, experts stress that people with flu symptoms should not visit the emergency room unless they exhibit red-flag symptoms: difficulty breathing, chest pain, bluish skin color, sudden dizziness, or severe and persistent vomiting. If you wonder if an ER visit is warranted, call your doctor, Ferrer says.

Keep it in perspective. Because swine flu is a new virus, few people have immunity to it, meaning that greater numbers will get sick, and the illness can spread fast. “But it’s not that this virus is more deadly or will make an individual sicker”

I had to go to the VA hospital in Ann Arbor for an appointment and they had a table set up by the main entrance.
They were given Free Flu Shots to veterans.
The sign that I saw read that the shots were available until November 1st.
I'm sure that you have to show your VA card to get the shot.
I'm sure that I would have found out if I have gotten one.

My dad had a bad experience with the flu shot when he was younger, so I've never gotten one. He said he got more sick from the vaccine than he ever had been when he caught the flu. Left him sick for about a week. Yuck. That darn flu is rough.

I will definitely keep washing my hands and covering my mouth when coughing/sneezing to avoid any type of sickness this year, but it's hard to get other people to do the same!

Seasonal flu shot may have caused woman’s neurological disease
A healthy 25 year old named Desiree Jennings decided to get a seasonal flu shot back in August. Then 10 days later, on the day of her second wedding anniversary, she started having flu-like symptoms, according to a Washington DC news source, www.wusa9.com

Many who have heard or read her story are atomically connecting it with a reaction to the swine flu vaccine, but WUSA9 mentioned several times within the context of the story that Jennings’ body was having its adverse reaction to a seasonal flu shot.

When Jennings went to a hospital, several tests were run and the doctors concluded that the adverse reaction did come from the seasonal flu vaccine, and they diagnosed her with dystonia, which is not the same thing as the Guillain-Barre Syndrome associated with the swine flu vaccine.

Jennings thoughts on the matter were that hospital tests confirmed what she had already suspected: "Nothing else explains such a fast moving neurological damage. The medical hospitals ruled out everything, CAT scans normal, blood normal, MRI normal. The only thing that explains it is the shot caused neurologic damage."

The disease causes her muscles to contract and she says that she is unable to walk forward, but she can walk backward. Running isn’t a problem, but she needs help stopping, and walking up steps and speaking are a struggle. Sometimes noises cause her to have convulsions.

Though Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) has actually been suggested to be a possible side effect of swine flu, it has different symptoms from dystonia, but both disorders are neurological disorders. In a nutshell, dystonia causes muscles to contract. But Guillain-Barre Syndrome, according to the
Center for Disease Control, "is a rare disorder in which a person’s own immune system damages the nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis…in rare cases, people have died of GBS, usually from difficulty breathing."

The CDC website also says that GBS is more common in adults who are over 50 than it is in children, and the website also states that, "it is believed that stimulation of the body’s immune system may pay a role in its (GBS) development." A FoxNews.com report from August 2, 2009 stated that some drug manufacturers used an ingredient called adjuvant in the swine flu vaccine. Adjuvant is thought to stimulate the body’s immune system so that the vaccine is more effective.

According to the WUSA9.com article, Jennings stated that she, "just wants healthy people to talk to their doctors and weigh the risk."

I saw this story on the news....she can run and walk backwards fine but she's a mess just trying to walk.

Okay I think the beginning of this clip is a bit misleading since it flashes something about H1N1 but it does show the problems the cheerleader has walking.

That's just awful! Poor lady.  :(
What a scary thing. You think you're going to help yourself and then end up getting much sicker than you ever would have when catching the flu.

I once read a trick that could help people avoid getting a cold or flu. I read it online and tried it when I had a busy weekend coming up and felt I was coming down with a cold. You put drops of hydrogen peroxide in your ears. Anyone ever heard of it?

Here's a link:
http://www.health911.com/remedies/rem_coldsf.htm

and some others saying similar things about hydrogen peroxide:

http://www.livestrong.com/health-article/hydrogen-peroxide-for-colds-and-flu_98ea4bff-7db6-57f6-f9a5-92112deef84c/

It also talks about other remedies to stop colds and flu. They may or may not work, but I think safe home remedies are worth a try.

My doctor tells me to put hydrogen peroxide in my ears to keep them clean.  I haven't heard of any other reason.

Just wondering how many have had their children vaccinated for H1N1?  Children, meaning anyone under 18.  I've seen several reports showing stats that are concerning regarding children and pregnant women infected with the virus.

I've never had a flu shot nor have any of my children. My thought has always been "we'll pass it around" and be done with it.  But this one kind of scares me.  But so does the vaccine.

Thoughts and opinions?????

My wife is pregnant and we want her to get the swine flu shot as soon as possible.  I called the health depts. for Lucas, Monroe, Washtenaw and Lenawee.  No H1N1 yet.  If someone finds an early source, please post it.

I have not heard of anyone having the shot available either.  If anyone does get the vaccine for children under 6 or so, I would make sure it is the single dose.  The multiuse dosage uses teh preservative thinerisol  I think it is better t stay away from for the little ones.

I got the regular flu shot last week.  No effect other than a bit sore at the area of the shot. Nothing really.

My wife is pregnant and we want her to get the swine flu shot as soon as possible.

That would be akin to killing two "birds" with one "stone."  One wee little toxic shot and two dead.  The cheerleaders for the NWO and its built-in population-reduction program love sheeple like you, Mike.

BTW, I am also interested in knowing the best place that I can get the microchip implant for my family and the barcode tattoo as well.  Do they take fiat currency for payment?

Pregnant women  have been effected badly with the H1N1 flu.  It is a serious risk.  To make light of someone in that situation for some stupid, unsubstantiated attack is beyond rude.

Further, insinuating that you want Mike's wife and unborn child dead is low.  Probably as low as anyone get be.  Why is it that some people live to cause or hope for the misery of others?

Pax, you should apologise to Mike for that.
