I fully understand the concept of slum lords, etc. I fully understand GOP misspending and the Bridge to Nowhere.  Let me put my former response in simple words:  My husband and I worked very hard to save and buy our home.  Therefore, we take very good care of our home.  We do not punch walls, bust windows, break doors, etc. because we will have to repair and rebuild with our own cash.  I was born and raised in Detroit.  Enough said.  My grandmother lived in a housing project after my grandfather died.  I saw the mindless destruction of the residents who did not care because someone was going to repair the damages with no cost to them. Another example:  My son in law worked at a steel plant for 9 yrs.  He lost his job, but in order to keep his family insured, accepted another job making $4 less.  He and my daughter fell behind on several bills.  There house was near foreclosure.  Upon asking for help from their mortgage co and HUD, they were told to take a hike.  My daughter and sil work hard and were elated when able to purchase their first home.  What about them?  I do not see any government agency rushing to help them out of their situation.  Who did? My family.

One more thing and I am totally done with this thread.  Many people are in need of welfare for various reasons.  Wasn't this topic debated on another thread?  But, it is not meant as a generational lifestyle.
residents that commit mindless destruction need to be EVICTED.
got a mortgage here, no family to help, and you're right...there's no help from anyone except more financial instutions that will set you up for failure.

It is also quite possible that because it's low-income government housing, they were built by the lowest bidder. Hence, slipshod construction. Hence, falling apart easily.
Poor people are human too.

We also sent men to the moon using lowest bidder processes.

Get a grip. My government doesn't owe 'poor people' affordable housing anymore than my government owes me.

Work, save, live below your means. Teach your children the same. Change your family tree. Put your hands back in your pocket unless your going to shake hands.

Charity with my money is a voluntary action--not compulsory.

Peace,

Griff

Don't ever defend the poor, they are not human, they want to be poor, they love it. Don't you know that? The government can spend huge amounts of money on bridges to nowhere, or , the State Department’s  cannot say “specifically what it received” for most of the $1.2 billion it has paid DynCorp since 2004 to train the police officers in Iraq.
But those damn poor people, they will be the ruin of us.

Such good sound advice Griff...  you sound like my grandfather and my dad and probably what I sounded like to my kids ;) ;)  Both of the older ones have real good jobs and are still real tight with their $$.

Now, if we could just get the government to follow that advice *:) *:) *:)

My father was very poor when he was a child.  In fact, when times were very hard he was shuttled to an orphanage.  I understand the plight of the poor.  My oldest grandson was lived in subsidized housing the first 7 yrs of his life.  It is the entitlement mentality I do not understand.  No nastiness, no cattiness, just my opinion.

Tell your unemployed neighbors to check out the state site for a new job. No reason to hate  someone for having a good job. So you recommend they are better unemployed then working for the state? Civil service jobs do not discriminate against age either.

I just copied and pasted this quote from Sue Lee from another thread.  Sounds like a plan for some of the poor people that are not being defended.   :)

Their is a subtle distinction to be made between 'poor' and 'broke.'

Broke is a financial situation while poor is a state of mind.

However, a place exists that is capable of assisting both the broke and the poor.

It is called 'work.'

Your mileage may vary.

Want to expand a little on the original post I made introducing the topic.  As I mentioned we already have 34 HUD programs to promote affordable housing. Yet now Dems tell us all these existing programs supposedly aren't getting the job done.

So what do they do about it?  Do they take a look at the 34 existing programs and try to figure
out what went wrong? No. They're tell us what we need is yet another program. Is affordable
housing so complex we need 34, or now 35, different programs to address the problem? And if,
after having already created 34 different affordable housing programs, why are we to believe that
the addition of a 35th program is the ultimate panacea?

We're no longer fighting the Commies.
Communism is alive and well. Rome on the Potomac is irretrievably infested with commies who presume to dictate the conditions of your life.

So all of the poor people in Michigan can get state jobs? And they will drive to them in what? And they have the required college education to do what? Do you have a clue what being really poor is about? Poor enough to live in the projects? I would bet that you two ladies are referring to black women, and I would dare to venture in your opinion they are all single moms on crack.
There is poor, and there is impoverished, and there is a big difference. You two are a trip.

Hey at the very least, they could get jobs standing at the freeway exits with their signs that say please help, god bless!
Speaking of which... Where is their god?  Why does he allow this?
I bet now the chrisitians will check in with god only helps those who help themselves..  Unless of course, our government will just go ahead and give them handouts...

It sucks to be a honest hard working person because nobody cares about our struggles do they?
Let's let people enter into foreclosure and lose their homes while we give free money and what not away to the lazy... God bless America!  What a country!

I will speak out for the middle class and the working people. My problem is, why do people always blame the poor? I agree most of the programs are mismanaged and wasteful. But why is all their anger directed at the poor. No anger towards the corporations that receive billions, why is that?
I know why, because the poor are our scapegoats. They are someone to look at, and say "I am better then that." Look at those lazy bums, taking my money. Putting them down makes people feel better about their own life.
The poor in this country are not the ones who steal your hard earned dollars. Your anger should be directed at our government, both parties, and the billions they waste. What poor people in our nation receive is nothing.

Contrary to popular belief, corporations recieve billions because they have a product to sell. Unlike government they don't have thugs (IRS) that come and arrest you and sieze your property because you don't buy what they have to sell. Hell, the government doesn't have anything to sell, except BS programs, and still throw you in jail and take your property.

You're right that the poor don't steal our money, the government does it for them!
Government gives them our dough through forced income redistribution, traps them in failed programs that keep them under government control, and tells them, "Now don't you feel better, look what we have done for you, vote for us again and we will give you MORE."

The government has NO mandate to be in the CHARITY business. The American people are better at taking care of our own than the government ever could be!
Just look to California right now.
People were taking care of people before the government even got off it's big lumbering butt!

I won't dispute you comment on government, the parties, and the billions they waste at all!!!
Katrina should have been a screaming wake up call about the effectiveness of massive government control and spending.

What the hell are you talking about?  That I am referring to black women?  Why are you bringing race into this?
Do you know what it is like living in the projects?  Are you aware that many people, black, white, men and women can get a college education with the help of federal grants?  You act as though you have been "down with the struggle".  I know the difference between poor and impoverished.  The point I was trying to make is this:  I was born and raised in Detroit, not St. Clair Shores.  My grandmother lived in a housing project called Herman Gardens.  I saw what happened in Herman Gardens.  My grandmother was beaten to a pulp by one of your so called impoverished people.  Get off your high horse.
