The photo wasn't intentional Tiny...

There was a lot of traffic that day and so I couldn't stop right on the road.  Pulled off up at the dike and crossed the road.  I see what you mean but I never even payed any attention to it.

We've seen several of those posts with platforms on them somewhere recently (not quite sure where now) but noticed there didn't seem to be any eagles in any of them.  Maybe they've just been installed recently.

Thought I posted this earlier, but, maybe  I forgot to hit send button.. that's what happens when you get old..lol..
I finally got hold of my brother in law who grew up on Kelly Rd. He said that as far as he knew that was just a wall. He said there was a small office building at the end of the lane where Cousino Rd/Kelly come together and that the railroad had a dirt/rock road about 8 foot wide along the tracks there. Farmers would bring  trucks with produce for the Detroit/Toledo markets, check it in at the office and drive down the lane to unload their trucks directly on  the train.  He told me that when the train no longer used the area as a loading station, his Dad was given the building.  It is now still used as a utility shed at his old house on Kelly Road.

Memory is the 2nd function to go DogLover.  Interesting info from your bil..

I'm sure for the last 80 years that's all it's been is "just a wall"...  one of the reasons to document all these smaller bits of local history...   in another generation this information will be completely lost.

I did another map...   A-F is the known location (pretty close anyway) of "the wall"...

I just projected a nice sweeping curve like might be used with someone in a wagon and a team of horses approaching the area off the end of Kelly road as your bil suggested...   might not be perfect but it's what I interpreted it "could be".

All the loading and unloading by the farmers would have to be on that side of the wall since they couldn't get out on the tracks with their wagon.

As so often happens on a "hunt" like this...  you get one piece of solid info and then it opens up even more questions.

A-F is the wall...  G-K is my idea of a lane to the back of the wall.

Wow!  I can't believe I finally found out how to get back to this site. When someone gets old, its not nice to  fool with changing sites.. :o.. I am just hoping  I will remember what I did to find my way back the next time  :-\
OK..with that said...BRD, I don't think I worded correctly what my BIL told me and seemed to have led you on a wrong path.
He stated the building was at the end of the lane that ran right along the tracks. He said there was about  an 8 foot dirt/rock road between the tracks
and the wall. I do not know the area, other than your maps, but I guess the lane ran off Cousino road.   :-[ Sorry if I misled you.

Not a problem at all DogLover...

I see exactly what your BIL is saying...

What I am looking for is info that there was possibly one more set of tracks that ran along that right of way at one time.  I have found a couple of websites with opposing info so I'm looking for something to verify it.  I also found a reference to about 500 ft of additional track for a siding that was laid at "Cousino" around 1928.  That would fit very well with the length of the wall (about 265-275 feet).  Of course one still unanswered question is is this "Cousino" that they're referencing.  I'm fairly confident that it is but would like a little more "proof" for sure.  We know there was "some kind" of a station at Cousino and that it was in Monroe County per the Professor's link...   several things we run into though is just "when" are we talking about.  At one time Monroe County covered parts of several adjacent counties including part of what is now downtown Toledo.  I'm thinking that due to the concentration of farmers in the area named Cousino (I have several old plat maps and they're definitely all around that little area) that it was just a "farm stop" for the farmers in the area.  They had to name it something so they named it Cousino.  The fact that the road is named Cousino would kind of help lead to the same conclusion.  Somewhere there is an old map or plat or something that is going to tell us for sure.  It's just a matter of stumbling onto the right person or place that has the info.  It's just trying to pull all the pieces together.  And I haven't had as much time to work on it as I would like to have...   I hate it when work interferes with my fun >:( >:( >:(

Here's a new picture, may be easy for some.
Don't know if it's supposed to be the Titanic but it has 5 stacks and Titanic only had 4.
Also don't know why it is where it is located or what it represents.

My wife has walked by it hundreds of times and never seen it either. It is visible from the road though, not hidden.

Another hint: A lot of teenagers should have seen it.

I sure didn't Tiny...

When you first posted the photo I drove around town looking for that style of brickwork with those colors...   fairly well dated!

One of the first buildings I looked at was the Monroe Middle School but I saw window transoms above the doors...   not the blocked off transom in your photo.  So I wrote it off and kept looking.  Then with your recent hint about teenagers I drove back past there today.  Heading west on 6th street the first door I noticed had a similar red clay block but it depicted an airplane.  When I got to the next door it was the window transom I had first noticed (must have missed the one with the airplane the first time).

Drove around the front and nothing there then drove back east on 5th street and the first door I saw had a window transom...  but then clear at the back of the building I saw another red clay insert...   I had my trailer on the back of the truck and there is no place to park...   so I didn't get out and go up and check for sure so I just have to "guess" at this point that your photo was taken at:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=monroe,+mi&hl=en&ll=41.911284,-83.399009&spn=0.006475,0.013937&sll=41.867824,-83.452155&sspn=0.051837,0.111494&t=h&hnear=Monroe,+Michigan&z=17&layer=c&cbll=41.911335,-83.399122&panoid=tNPQQ9nV0x17fPV_hraPaQ&cbp=12,194.42,,0,2.48

I am thinking maybe those inserts were added to the building fairly recently and that is why no one recognized them that may have gone to school there :-\ :-\ :-\

That's the spot! Above the door set back in there. Actually my brother told me about it. We did some countertop work in the school a couple of years ago and I never noticed it then either. Heck I'll have to go find the airplane you talked about, I haven't seen that either. My wife went to school there in the late 60's early 70's and said she never seen it. There used to be a small party store across the street from that door and the kids would go in and out that door to the store. It was the High School then. My brother thought maybe the school was built back when the Titanic sunk and maybe it was a rememberance or something. Looks like the Titanic except it has 5 stacks instead of 4. Good work I was beginning to think everyone was tired of this thread.

BTW the mortar looks like the original I don't see any splices. Could have been placed later, I don't know.

No, not at all tired of the thread!   I've been trying to figure this one out, but I don't get to Monroe too often.    It's been a fun one!!!   (I'd thought perhaps it was something new added at the library ???)

I was thinking it just looked in too good of condition to be as old as the school is...

especially if it's a true terracotta relief...

I'd like to get up and scrape it with my knife...

but I'm sure school officials wouldn't look kindly to that move.

I'm thinking it's a concrete terracotta look alike...

again, just based on it being in such good condition.  But maybe it's just so well protected up in there that it doesn't weather or age ;) ;) ;)

It's still one of my favorite threads...

I'd like to know (maybe I wouldn't) how many miles we've driven while looking for some of these ;) ;) ;)
