Big butter jesus destroyed by fire.
« on: June 15, 2010, 07:05:17 AM »

The 62 foot high statue of Jesus on the east side of Interstate 75, at the Solid Rock Church, was consumed by flames after getting struck by lightning late Monday. A dispatcher from the Monroe Department of Police said that the statue was fully eaten by flames after a lightning strike. “I got the call at about a quarter after eleven,” the dispatcher said.

The natives of Ohio know the statue more as, “Touchdown Jesus”, while others, “Big Butter Jesus”, is set at the head of a baptismal pool, colored with lights and fountains. It depicted the image of Jesus, from the chest up where he is raising his hands to the heavens. The statue had a 42-foot (13 m) span between its upraised hands and a 40-foot (12 m) Christian cross at its base.

The statue was designed by Brad Coriel, sculpted by James Lynch, and then assembled by Mark Mitten. It was constructed on a metal frame using styrofoam covered by a thin skin of fiberglass and was completed in September 2004 which accumulated a cost of $500,000, which was financed from earmarked donations and not from the general funds of the church.

It was just north of Middletown, Ohio on the east side of 75.  Been by it many times and I always thought to myself it was a 'bit over the top'.

It's a good thing to idolize Jesus but I looked at it as commercialism, much like the 'church' with the semi trailer advertising on 75 just north of the turnpike in Ohio.

I guess you need to get parishoners any way you can....  It's the money trail. 8*

I think the electric lines in the background between his arms proved to be prophetical in nature.

Kind of makes me wonder how lightning could have struck it in the first place :-\ :-\ :-\

would have thought the powerline would have acted like a big lightning rod to draw it away from anything else in the immediate area.
