I was just thinking about the recent “to-do” list President Obama sent to Congress demanding they take action for the sake of the American people. Then President Obama hits the road making speeches slamming Congress for not immediately putting their stamp on his legislation. This isn’t governing. This is campaigning. Now I expect everybody will think “what do you realistically expect 5 months from an election? Neither side is going to give an inch! All politics all the time. I understand. Right on.
But the point I would make is this is pretty much how President Obama has rolled since the Republicans first took over Congress in a landslide in 2010. Obama would throw something at them and then hit the road making public speeches slamming them for “their” intransigence. Not exactly the light touch if you know what I mean. More important, President Obama clearly seems adverse to rolling up his sleeves and doing
the hard work necessary to hammer out something meaningful with those on the other
side of the aisle. That is what a “Leader” does.
As evidence, President Clinton also experienced a similar Republican landslide that took control of Congress in 1994. Yet, together with Speaker Gingrich, he hammered out balanced budgets and did a good job reforming welfare. Clinton was willing to roll up his sleeves and do the work.
Ronald Reagan always had a Dem Congress. Yet Reagan, working with Speaker Tip O’Neal, took an economy in the tank and presided over an economic renaissance.
Another point I would make is this. In my life I’ve seen Speaker John Boehner in action and I’ve also seen Speakers Newt Gingrich and Tip O‘Neal in action, and I‘ll tell you this. John Boehner is not nearly as formidable as a Newt Gingrich or a Tip O‘Neal.
So the bottom line this. President Obama is either incapable, or unwilling, to do what is necessary to keep us from getting deeper in the mire. On that basis, I don’t see how giving him 4 more years of speeches blaming others for our predicament is going to turn things around.
