Bart D. Ehrman
« on: March 28, 2011, 04:24:02 PM »

Bart D. Ehrman is an American New Testament scholar, currently the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He's authored:

Misquoting Jesus
Jesus Interrupted
Forged
The Historical Jesus (24 college lectures)

I think every christian and non-christian should read Ehrman's works, if you care about the true history behind Jesus and the New Testament scriptures concerning him.

Ehrman doesn't take any sides, he only shows the history we have. People are free to choose where they stand on Jesus after taking into account a realistic historical view of him.

I did watch youtube video you posted with Mr. Ehrman and found him very illuminating.

Out of the books mentioned above, I'd most recommend "Jesus Interrupted".

Jesus Interrupted should be the opening introduction in all Bibles.

Just finished "Misquoting Jesus - The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why" by Erhman. Misquoting Jesus, Jesus Interrupted, and the college lectures on the Historical Jesus are all good reads for those interested in the historical reality behind the Bible.

Now, I'm going to read "God's Problem - How the Bible Fails to Answer Our Most Important Question - Why We Suffer". It's also by Bart Ehrman.

I Was Wrong - Bart D. Ehrman Won Me Over

I changed my mind on Bart's new book "Did Jesus Exist?" At first, I had some major problems with it, but Bart won me over. After much thought, I'd say his arguments seem most probable.

Xerxes attempting to cast more "stumblingblocks" to get people to DOUBT their faith and the Bible.

Simply put: Humans were CREATED in the IMAGE of the Creator ... you'll NEVER win.

"Hi, my name is Xerxes: I am wasting many God-given hours of my life blogging on a little insignificant forum called Monroetalks, that serves a community of people that routinely tolerates corrupt politicians, has a HUGE segment of the population surviving now on federal/state government welfare, and has NO HOPE for any jobs and has held a steady 30% TRUE unemployment rate for about half a decade...in my opinion, most of the people here are DUMB because they flock to Christian churches week in and week out, and I am smarter than all their pastors combined...wanna learn the true history behind Jesus?...I will tell it to you because I am a reformed Christian who is now a learned atheist, and all the world's problems would go away if Christians would dump their faith, admit they fell for a LIE, and would follow after the "illuminating" works of Christopher Hitchens and other atheists who have come out of Christianity"

Nice try again, Xerxes - Christians need to LEARN the BIBLE, and not follow after false teachers blindly, support Christian politicians who have statist voting records of expanding government control over their lives, or financially support LARGE ministries that serve when they themselves are broke.  Christians need to FLEE economically depressed areas for WORK, and forsake false hope in men - they need not DUMP their faith and attempt to become any sort of intellectual powerhouse ... because the BIBLE SAYS that is a destructive path: [Romans 1:21-22] "Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.[22] Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

1Corinthians 3:19  also says: "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness."

In your "craftiness", you implore and provoke me(who lived there for nearly a decade, and ran for public office when I got fed up with the willful tanking of the economy by Michigan's Christian politicians) to DEFEND the faith on behalf of those you are trying to trip up for Satan's purpose - and - God uses my talents to defeat you again and again for the sake of His BELIEVERS.

We will not learn "the true history behind Jesus from you or your KIND who, as 2 Peter 2:18 says: "...speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error." - we will learn from the SCRIPTURES and the apostles who spread the Gospel the world over unto martyrdom because it dared to DETHRONE man from God's place as deed-holder and RULER over His creation.

God-deniers are all morons, period.  Morons meaning they NEED instruction as a seven year old child knows NOT what to do next.  Like a rebellious child having a temper tantrum when your AUTHORITY says "don't do that", they seek justification for their constant rejections of the OBVIOUS, and perpetual positive reinforcement of your disbelief from men who preceded them in their like decisions to reject Christ; that was NOT rooted in intelligence, knowledge, or wisdom - but rather in pursuit of their own lusts of the flesh, and a willing ignorance of BOTH cataclysmic events by God, the creation and the flood.

The fact that these people(authors/speakers/professors you recommend, and sit at the feet of to fuel your fire of hatred for God) may have money, fame, positions of esteem among men in universities means NOTHING - because as Proverbs 10:2 says: "Treasures of wickedness profit nothing:" - God's people will inevitably become stewards over ALL they build in one way or another, upon His decree when He steps in to stop the lawlessness of ungodly men.

Christians, at this time, need to STRENGTHEN their faith - not flee from it ... I recommend Paul Washer during these times of great Gospel deception and economic collapse at the hands of men in both clergy and politics who are openly professing Christ as savior; but who DEEDS prove they are none of His!

(start at the 28:50 mark for a CLEAR definition/description of the God-denier, how much EFFORT they put forth in suppressing the knowledge of the Creator they already possess)

Regeneration vs Decisionism by Paul Washer

Hi, my name is Xerxes: I am wasting many God-given hours of my life blogging on a little insignificant forum called Monroetalks...

And on which little insignificant forum are you wasting your time with such long posts?

Less, do you seriously have even the slightest grasp of logic? I never said I was smarter than all the pastors combined. I said on certain points I consider my stance more intelligent than theirs. They may be more intelligent on other points. Stick to the topic at hand, as opposed to using Ad Hominems as you Red Herring. Oh, and again, I'm not an atheist.

Less, I recommend you get a book on logic and discussion, so you stop embarrassing yourself. If I had to guess the extent of your education on logic it would have to be a read of Schopenhauer's "Thirty-Eight Ways to Win An Argument" where he shows how to use faulty logic and crap all over someone without ever making a valid point.

Sammy, yeah, you are like an annoying parasite. You add nothing to a topic. You only seek to suck on someone. Grow up. Educate yourself. Get a hobby. Get a clue?

I have a hobby, and I have a clue. I'm not convinced you have either.

No, Sammy, I don't think you have a clue. Even the Admin has warned you several times not to act this way. Don't you get it? Not even the Monroe News wants you acting like this on their forum. All you have to do is stop acting tough and discuss the topic matter.

Let me make this so simple a caveman could get it. This is discussion forum. This area is the Religion & Philosophy category. In this category people discuss and debate religion and philosophy. If you have absolutely nothing to add to the discussion other than immature insults, why post? Because you get off on crapping on conversations without adding a single thought to the topic matter?

Wow! How would you know about the Admin warning me, unless you were the reporter? FYI, they put me in a "timeout" because of your complaints. That's  OK, because are not  the only whiner on the forum. "If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen"!

Here's what you're not getting... Let me try again, so you can clearly get it.

LessGov insults me all the time, but I don't report him. You know why? He makes an attempt to address the subject matter, though not very skillfully. His insults are annoying but I can take the heat, provided it was laced within an attempt to address the subject matter.

You, on the other hand, offer nothing but insults, like you get off on being some grumpy tough guy. You know what we call that on the internet? A troll. Your insults are merely spamming and trolling.

Geez... If you were a cookie, you'd be a grumpy cookie!

How's that for perceptiveness?  ;D

Anyways... Can we get back on topic? I'm sure LessGov can bring it somewhat back to topic by responding to my last post...
