What is a good cover Vine or Bush?
« on: April 05, 2011, 01:59:03 PM »

I am looking for advice on what to plant on a chain link fence line?  I favor throw back, heirloom type of plants.. You know we don't have the same type of plants and flowers to choose from as say they did fifty years ago.. I like to preserve a rare plant when I can...

So I am looking for suggestions on what kind of Ivy or flowering vine or bushes to grow, it is facing the east and will be in full sun..

I know growing up, we had a Honey Suckle bush like vine, but it was not in full sun.  I don't see people grow them any where in Michigan..  Does anyone know what I am talking about?

Are there any bushes that grow and flower?  I want something that will eventually hide the fence, that I don't have to replant.  I know they will go dormant in the winter, but I want something that will turn green and flower..

So let me know..

Right now, on my fence.. my Confederate Jasmine is in full bloom.. It loves full sun and completely hides the fence.. It blooms once a year, little tiny white flowers and at night it hangs heavy in the air.. some people call it night Jasmine for that reason..  The rest of the year the leaves remain green unless it freezes, but they are pretty hardy and do grow up north of Florida, but I don't think it will survive a long period freeze...

So that is what I like..

Evergreen clematis is good. English and Boston ivy, too. And wintercreeper--it has variegated leaves and is green, creamy white, and pink.

I like morning glories (annual) and scarlet runner beans for summertime coverage, although they're messy to clean up in the fall.

I have a neighbor with something that even attaches to wood fences and has big orange blossoms all summer.  The humming birds love it.  Eventually it covers the whole fence and continually reroots.  I'll have to ask what it is.

Sounds like a Trumpet Vine . My mom has a huge one in her backyard . Come to think of it she has some in the front yard too.

What blue2 is describing sounds like trumpet vine as superspice_10 said.  They are absolutely beautiful.  I do have a honeysuckle vine on my chain link fence in my back yard - however, it does not get full sun, just partial sun.  When it flowers, it smells wonderful.  I also have some ivy growing on lattice to cover an ugly wall - it is extremely hardy, grows & spreads quickly but doesn't flower.
