They are very common, and thrive in and around the river.   I have seen them come from the field next door, covered with mud, after laying their eggs, saunter across my property to my pond, then then later make it back to the river about 1/4 mile away.  I once had the neighbor show up with one in a bucket...thinking I wanted it for my pond.   It's shell was a foot long.

:o My daughter & I saw 1 too crossing Stewart Rd by the car wash behind Walgreens. She almost ran it over but it crawled up on the curb & into the grass . We wanted to take it to a nearby pond or creek but we didnt have anything to put it in so the guy working at the carwash said he would get it with his shovel & take it to creek behind the carwash .

We thought it was odd that it was there . Amazing  little creatures. Seems that the wildlife is sure active around here latley .  :) We went to the State Park and saw a big snake by the bathrooms , it ran away in a hurry  :)

Picked up a snapping turtle once...the thing wasn't happy being handled....it got away and I sure didn't mind.

A neighbor found a friendly painted turtle going through our backyard about ten years ago and the little guy has been with us ever since.....the turtle, not the neighbor.

Kind of looks like this one:

Has real long claws

Recently just enlarged his tank to an eight footer and made a topper out of foil-faced polyisocyanurate foam sheathing and clad in FRP's.....totally eliminated water evaporation altogether....previously had to replace about three gallons a week...we keep the tank full....most turtle tanks are only partially full.

He has dual ramps to take him into his lair built into the topper....with a low wattage Repti-Sun bulb and a temperature controlled ceramic heater

We have a bunch of fish in there as well.....only the fastest survive.

Wasn't that long ago when a saleslady refused to sell us fish once she found out they would share an aquarium with a turtle.....I asked her of how she can sell feeder fish....no answer....she eventually relented when I said I'd put 'em in our other aquarium....which I did, for a day or so.

Anyway I put some LED lights on a timer....and put in some plants to deprive the algae of nutrients....and the inexpensive to operate system is practically maintenance-free.

Of course our top of the line Eheim canister filter wasn't exactly cheap....but it's almost silent and very thrifty on electricity.

I guess the worst part of keeping a turtle is when my wife makes his food. Every month or so she makes a concoction of shrimp, vitamins, and gelatin. Sort of stinks up the house. Not sure what else she puts in there.

A little long-winded but I'm hoping something I mentioned may attract a visitor....more eyeballs could help the site out.

Including model numbers could draw people but I'm way too tired to dig 'em out.

I've been thinking about starting a product review topic....maybe the admin could create a product review category....sure wouldn't mind if someone else could get it started..I'm exhausted.
