Anyone know a bee keeper in the area?
« on: August 05, 2011, 02:53:03 PM »

We have a swarm of honey bees (at least that's what they look like to me) swarming in one of our trees...   I've see this a few times before.  They're looking for a new place to live and I really don't want it to be right here!!!

Please either post or PM or email me if you know anyone who might want to capture the swarm :D :D :D

Well they're still here this morning although the shape of the "mass" has changed to more of a sphere...

The pic looking at them from the side was taken with "lots of zoom" yesterday afternoon...

Last night after they looked settled in I got brave (I'm allergic to bee stings) and drove the car under the swarm and took a picture through the sunroof (yes, the glass was closed).  We went for a ride then and blew all the bees off the car :) :) :)

They're hanging about 7 feet off the ground right over our driveway.  My wife forgot they were there and drove right under them with the pickup this morning...   but at 5:15 I doubt they were too active.

Thx for the info superspice...   I'll have my wife come home from work that way tomorrow and see if she can find them.  We don't want to exterminate them.  Hope to find a beekeeper that can use them.  Honeybees have been dying off in droves the last few years so I'd hope a beekeeper would want them.

Here's a wiki article on swarming bees...   normally they will only stay in a tree like this for a few days...  it was about this time yesterday when I saw the swarm moving in.  It's right outside our bedroom window so that is part of the problem.  If they were out in the woods I wouldn't be quite as concerned.  Don't want them to go into the barn or shed or the eave of the house though.

My wife is going to stop there this afternoon...   see if she can get any info from them.

The bees are still "hanging around" this morning.

I did set the video camera up yesterday and got some good video and stills (the video camera zooms in something like 60X)...

They haven't bothered us at all...   If I wouldn't have seen them swarming we might not ever know they were there.

My ExHubby's dad is a beekeeper, but they live way down south. He sent some of his honey with honeycomb about a month ago, and the girls love the fresh honey on toast. I'm not fond of being close to bees, either, but beekeeping sure seems like an interesting and rewarding hobby. Hope this swarm can find a good home!

I've calmed down quite a bit since they first showed up.  They haven't bothered the dogs or cats or ME 8) 8) 8)

I don't want them hanging around so long they decide to move into the barn or the house though.

They are definitely "up for adoption" ;) ;) ;)

You know there's a honey bee crisis going on now. Their numbers are dwindling rapidly. Someone could be a hero to the agricultural industry by taking this swarm and maintaining it.
