Anthony Bourdain vs Paula Deen
« on: January 18, 2012, 12:13:50 PM »

This article made me laugh because of Tony's eternal snarkiness, but it also makes me wonder about Paula Deen's sense of ethics.

~~~~~~~~
(CBS) Anthony Bourdain is continuing his war of words with Paula Deen.
The "No Reservations" host, who previously called Deen the "worst, most dangerous person to America," made his most recent comments after the Food Network personality announced Tuesday that she has Type 2 diabetes and had signed a deal to endorse a diabetes drug.
Paula Deen confirms she has Type 2 diabetes
Hours after Deen broke the news, Bourdain posted this message on Twitter: "Thinking of getting into the leg-breaking business, so I can profitably sell crutches later."
He sent a second tweet later, responding to an article on TMZ about his tweet. "For the record: Never called anybody a "diabetic scam artist," he wrote. "TMZ's words. Not mine"
On Monday, when Deen's news had yet to be announced but speculation about it was rampant, Bourdain questioned Deen promoting fatty foods while knowing about her diagnosis.
"When your signature dish is hamburger in between a doughnut, and you've been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you've got Type 2 Diabetes... It's in bad taste if nothing else," he told Eater. "How long has she known? I suspect a very long time." (On the "Today" show Tuesday, Deen revealed she was diagnosed three years ago.)
This isn't the first time he has criticized Deen. Back in August, he called her "the most destructive person on the Food Network" and said in an interview: "She revels in unholy connections with evil corporations and she's proud of the fact that her food is f---ing bad for you. If I were on at seven at night and loved by millions of people at every age, I would think twice before telling an already obese nation that it's OK to eat food that is killing us. Plus, her food sucks."
Deen responded at the time by saying that Boudain needed to "get a life."
I also think it's a little funny that her son now has a show cleaning up Momma's recipes.
Oh well, it's all just show business... :P
I love Bourdain, he's so damn rude...lol
Paula's cooking might not be the healthy choice,  but to say it's not good is just being mean...I get the message he's saying, but Paula said on a show the other day my cookings not meant to be eaten everyday...Everything in moderation people.
Paula Deen is incredibly successful, so she's diabetic, who cares? Many people in America are diabetic. She has a great personality and a show people enjoy watching. This is just another opportunity for her to show her audience she's human and can overcome an obstacle.
I wouldn't hold her resposible for others diet choices. Come on, anyone with half a brain knows that her recipes are high in fat, calories, sugar, etc. I don't eat like that everyday by choice, but do indulge in rich fattening goodness at times, big deal! It's common knowledge that if you eat like that everyday, you're probably not going to be very healthy.
I enjoy bourdain's show, but he's know to pick on others, such as Racheal Ray. Who's next? How about the Man Vs. Food guy (forgot his name) anyway, is he setting a good example with all those pig outs? lol
Oh, yeah, Tony can be brutal, but I do love his show, except when he eats gross stuff. I think he does pick on that guy as well--I can't remember his name, either. I can't watch him at all. When people pig out like that it really turns my stomach. Hot dog eating contests will send me running from the TV! lol Gross!!!
My new favorite chef to watch is Eric Ripert on "Avec Eric." Suave, debonair, easy on the eyes.... Oh, yeah, and good food, too! ;0)
You can't overcome an obstacle by eating the very things that got you there in the first place.
Deep-fried butter nuggets slathered in bacon grease and topped with powdered sugar gives you diabetes? Who'da known!
Sorry in advance to her fans, but she's getting roasted in the media. I think I hurt myself laughing at this lampoon from FunnyOrDie.com:
~~~~~~~~~

Recently, Paula Deen has admitted that she’s had Type II Diabetes for years. Accordingly, she’s putting out a cookbook of healthy food. Here are some excerpts!

FRUIT SALAD

INGREDIENTS:

1 lb. bag of Skittles

3 cups ranch dressing

DIRECTIONS:

Mix well. Serve room temperature.

 -

PAULA’S BROWN RICE

INGREDIENTS:

1 pilaf white rice

1 bowl melted Junior Mints

DIRECTIONS:

Cover rice in chocolate. Serve with maple syrup to taste. To splurge, top with a sprinkle of sausage calzones.

 -

SCRAMBLED EGG WHITES

INGREDIENTS:

1 dozen (12) Cadbury eggs

2 lbs. Frito crumbs

1 package extra-fat pork lard

1 pilaf Paula’s brown rice

DIRECTIONS:

Break the Cadbury eggs and harvest the crème-filled white centers. Dip them in the Frito crumbs. Put the lard (make SURE to get the extra-fat kind or it will be BLAND) in a frying pan on high heat, and fry the crème centers until golden-brown. Serve on a bed of Paula’s brown rice.

 -

PAULA’S GARDEN BURGER

INGREDIENTS:

3 bags Olive Garden® Endless Breadsticks

12 Olive Garden® Stuffed Mushrooms

1 plate Olive Garden® New! Baked Pasta Romana with Chicken

4 Olive Garden® Black Tie Mousse Cakes

1 slice American cheese (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Smash all of the Olive Garden® foods together until they resemble a large patty and top with cheese. For lowest calories, hold the cheese.

 -

PAULA’S GUILT-FREE FAT-FREE® SMOOTHIE

INGREDIENTS:

34 lbs. sugar

DIRECTIONS:

Put sugar in smoothie glass and drink with straw, serve chilled in white wine tumblers or, for special occasions, lap from trough. This delicacy is guilt-free since you can make a conscious choice not to feel guilty about anything you put in your body like Paula does!

 -

BUFFET AND A BURGER

INGREDIENTS:

1 burger

1 Las Vegas buffet

Christmas-themed elastic pants (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Go to Las Vegas buffet. Make sure the buffet has burgers, or provide your own. Do NOT walk around the buffet. Get a motorized scooter, or stay in one spot and use a jaws of life to pick some of each buffet food out of the tubs and put it on your burger. Elastic pants are nice because your gupa (gunt-fupa) stays nicely inside the stretchy pants except for a few folds of fat with stretch marks that seep out of the pants.

 -

PAULA’S GUILT-FREE® PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLIES

INGREDIENTS:

1 peanut

18 sticks of butter, mashed

1 pair Jellies shoes

DIRECTIONS:

Cover the shoes with butter and top with the peanut, and then eat the shoes. If you eat shoes it’s like you’re exercising so it’s VERY healthy.

 -

PAULA’S GUILT-FREE® PIZZA PANTS

INGREDIENTS:

10’x20’ swath of pizza

Another pizza to use as pepperonis on the pizza

Stuffed mushrooms

FYI the mushrooms are stuffed with smaller pizzas

Smuckers magic shell ice cream topping

Rolos

Coca-cola

3 bags gummy bears

Fondue

Caesar salad dressing

Wood chips (as a thickener)

Grenadine syrup

Butter-flour mixture

Pizza Pockets

1 sewing machine

1 sewing pattern for pants (size XXXL)

DIRECTIONS:

Mushrooms are a vegetable and there are definitely some mushrooms on that pizza so technically they are HEALTHY-style pizza pants. Take the really big pizza. Put all of the other ingredients on the pizza. Pour the coke on the pizza. Dip the pizza in the fondue, and resist eating it before you make it into pants, no cheating!!! Sew that pizza into pants using the machine and the pattern. Make sure to sew in some pockets so you can keep a few extra spare Pizza Pockets in your pizza pockets!!!! Then eat your pants!!!!!!!!!!!

 -

PAULA’S GUILT-FREE® TURTURTURDUCKDUCKENDUCKEN

INGREDIENTS:

3 turduckens

DIRECTIONS:

Stuff a turducken in a turducken in a turducken. While you’re waiting for it to cook, make your fat niece make you some pizza pants while you’re watching Pawn Stars and eat your pants and then slap your niece.

 -

INSULIN AU GRATIN

INGREDIENTS:

1 insulin shot

15 lbs. block of cheddar cheese

DIRECTIONS:

Bury insulin shot in cheese. When you’re going into a diabetic coma, just eat your way to the shot!! Eat the cheese fast or you’ll die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 -

SPARKLING WATER

INGREDIENTS:

1 glass sparkling water

1 ham

DIRECTIONS:

Put ham in water.

If she starts doing the "go healthy" approach, they might stand up and support her...I'm finding it hard to understand the toxicity of the topic myself...Everyone has known her recipes are not the "healthy" choice for years...!

Eating unhealthy doesn't necessarily give you type 2 diabetes. It comes from a culmination of unhealthy lifestyle choices and family history of diabetes.

I think the 'toxicity' (good word!) comes from her hiding the fact for three years, and now that she's a paid representative of a drug company... that's just not sitting well with a lot of folks.

And yeah, when a thoughtful and health-oriented cook takes a step back and considers the ingredients in most of her recipes, that person would try and make some healthier substitutes. But Paula Deen is just so pervasive and popular, and her ooey gooey recipes look and sound (and ARE) decadent! She talks them up so well, and her shows and books make them look so very yummy, most people are just going to make it the way she does. She makes rich food even more irresistible than it already is. I just think that since she's on from 5-6PM every weeknight, her considerable fan base--which includes kids--might start to become complacent that high fat, high carb cooking is where it's at! That's what I meant when I said I wonder about her sense of ethics, especially considering our national obesity epidemic. And as Fritz mentioned, now her son is being paid to 'clean up' his momma's recipes. There's big bux just a'flyin' around those Deens! lol To see her profiting from an obesity related disease when she has directly contributed to making people fatter is unpalatable to a lot of people. According to that HuffPost article, even her peers are distancing themselves from her.

I notice that the Food Network pages about her are already highlighting her 'healthy' recipes. It will be interesting to see if she and her team can turn this around. I'm guessing they will. Lots of people really love Paula!
