Lilies
« on: January 12, 2013, 08:20:04 AM »

Lilies are some of my favorite flowers to grow - they don't require much attention at all, look (and smell) fantastic, and readily multiply from one year to the next.  I have several types already growing in the yard - asiatics, orientals, "tiger," and oriental-trumpet hybrids - but have gone rather wild ordering new additions to my collection this year. All but one of the new ones - American Sensation - are pictured here:

Oriental Golden Stargazer
Oriental Bergamo
Oriental-trumpet hybrid Anastasia
Oriental Salmon Star
Oriental-trumpet hybrid Purple Prince
Oriental Stargazer

As with my hibiscus I'm planning on cross-pollinating these fine specimens and will post progress reports as possible!

Each of them bloom for usually 2-3 weeks but because the bloom-times of the different species overlap one can have lilies blooming in the yard for a couple of months.  Asiatics are always first (usually commencing in May) and orientals are typically the last (July-Aug) with the others in between.  Unlike hibiscus and other flowers the time-frame for seeing the results of crossing lilies can take several years: truly a gardening-labor-of-love, eh?!!

Of course I omitted another of the new ones I've ordered so here it is:

Longiflorum-oriental hybrid Bellsong

Thanks!  I like seeing other people's lillies, but they usually have only one variety.  Seems it is best (if you want lasting bloom time) to have several types.  Appreciate your knowledge!

If anyone's interested: two of the better informational websites I've found for lilies are Mike's Backyard Garden and B & D Lilies.  Lots of pictures, too!
