Help! Easy, handmade gifts/prizes...
« on: February 28, 2012, 02:48:01 PM »

Hey y'all :)

I'm hosting my annual family reunion here at the house, and I'm trying to get some things figured out early so I'm not doing everything last minute. I need your creative minds for this! lol

I've come up with some games for the kiddies, but I've also come up with some goofy games for the adults. The only thing I'm having trouble with are the prizes! Kids prizes will be easy (I love the dollar store lol and kids really aren't picky). But I want to do something "different" with the adult prizes.

The games are all about having fun, and I don't want to go out and spend a bunch of money on prizes. I was hoping to make them. Something simple, that won't take up too much time, is what I would prefer. I've looked for hours online for ideas but nothing really stands out to me.

I was hoping to make the prizes "fun" instead of something practical. I've looked for gag gifts that I could make, and I've found a few, but I want to know what you guys think.

I've seen anti-aging pills (a lot of the adults that will participate in these games *are* older lol), redneck wine glasses (made with mason jars and glass candlesticks), comfy "slippers" (made out of maxi pads! :o), and a few others.

What are some gag gifts that you've seen, made, or even thought of??

Sounds like a fun time! LOVE the redneck wineglasses!  ;D

Hmmm... I can't think of any "gag" gifts (that are family friendly, at least!  8)). My mind goes straight to food! lol A bag of chocolate covered roasted peanuts (or cashews) is always popular with my family, and it's seriously easy to make.

It really doesn't have to be "family friendly" lol My family is very open to certain things. :P We know how to laugh and have a good time!

I did see a lot of good, easy recipes (and those peanuts sound DELISH!) but I'm trying to stay away from food, especially chocolate. It's going to be outside, in August, so I don't want any messes... lmao!

Mostly women will be playing these games, so maybe that will be helpful. The guys will be too busy playing in the horseshoe tournament. :P

Hi honey :) I love what you have going on sounds so fun. You said you like the dollar store, everything you need is there. Make $5 baskets. Wash bucket, cleaning rags, polish, dish soap and glass cleaner. Then make a candle one, baking one, hair and brush, give me a few moments I'm sure I'll think of more lol

Oh and watch for wines to go on sale. No one can say no to wine. I've seen Arbor Mist bottles go for $2 a bottle

ATG...a few years ago I attended a family reunion. The ages were anywhere from 2-90 yrs. old. They had door prizes all wrapped up in gift paper in a laundry basket and if you won a game or they called out your number (they gave everyone a number when they arrived) you were allowed to randomly choose a prize. Some of the prizes were a hoot!
Some of the prizes were: maalox, exlax, tampons (a 80 year old grandma got them   8*) a box of mac-n-cheese,etc. I ended up with a sample size of condoms!   :-[

The funniest was when a 75 yr. old bachelor cousin won twice,he first opened up a box of tissues...then his second prize he opened up a sample size of hand lotion. We all laughed till we cried. Be creative and make it fun!

That's one option that I've been kicking around... but like I said, I wanted the prizes to be something funny (kinda like the games :P). I may have to just do the baskets if I can't come up with something else. Thank you :)

LOL! Now that is funny!

See, we have a door prize (we hand out raffle tickets for that) and that is being made by my cousin (she's offered to make that, and she makes BEAUTIFUL things!)

I'll keep those in mind for the game prizes! Thanks!

Laughed so much at the ideas from NewDawn!   If you do something along those lines, you could wrap with special paper the ones that you definitely would not want the kids to get.   Or use different colors for different age groups.

A few ideas:  Kazoos, little harmonicas, hair bands (cheap to make with scraps and elastic), flower leis on strings, sample sized anything (air freshened, etc).  Maybe a fingerprint kit with washable paint, a comb for a baldie.

Ideas are just starting...I'll pass more along as they come.

Sounds like a fun party.....am I your long-lost aunt?

I came across some ideas that might help you out.

Miscellaneous:  http://trailerparkbarbie.wordpress.com/2007/12/04/wtf-are-these/

Redneck wine glasses:  http://familycrafts.about.com/od/makinggaggifts/ss/Redneck-Wine-Glass-Craft.htm

Maxi-pad slippers:  http://familycrafts.about.com/od/giftstomake/ss/Maxi-Pad-Slippers-Craft.htm

Duct tape projects (you can probably do a search for more ideas) :  http://www.onlineschools.org/2009/08/11/100-awesome-ways-to-use-duct-tape-in-your-dorm-room/
-------------
http://www.budget101.com/frugal/gag-gifts-137/. (more miscellaneous ideas).   The funniest ideas!  My favorite was the Belly Button Blow Dryer:

The Belly Button Blow Dryer is a fun novelty gift idea for the Person who Has Everything & is nearly impossible to shop for.

You'll Need
an ordinary flexible drinking straw attached to a card that says:
Instructions: Take deep breath. Place one end of dryer in mouth. Bend over. Place other end  of dryer near belly button. Blow. Repeat if necessary.

CAUTION * Do NOT inhale when dryer is near belly button
--------------

Or maybe the Guaranteed Bug Killer:
2 Small blocks of wood, labeled Block "A" and Block "B"
Print the following instructions and attach with a nice   ribbon:
Directions for Use:  Place bug on Block "A" and smash with Block "B".

Heres also something to think about --- My daughter & I have been passing a REALLY STINKY box of perfume back and forth for Xmas & birthdays for like 8 yrs , We sometimes wrap it in a box for something else to descise it ------ I got it one year in the box that my digital frame was in that she gave me.. Last year I left it under the tree at her work ( thanks to the girls in the office) I was able to sneak it in & she opened it in front of them . Sometimes Ive snuck it in her house while shes gone . Then I just wait cause shell eventually find it , Then she will think of ways to give it back to me ... Anyway maybe U could start a tradition like that where something REALLY TACKY , UGLY or STINKY gets passed around from year to year.  8* Its so much fun getting each other back ..............(that reminds me HER BIrthday is next week I better get it in the mail .) HAAHAHAH !!!!

IF u wrap up  gag gifts dont forget the bug spray. LOL ;D

You could possibly be! lol We've had a few new family members join the reunion... cousins that have never come before. This is our 17th annual, and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. I can't believe how many relatives I have! :P

We used to have huge family gatherings.  Alas, now that so many have gotten older, the relatives have become fewer.  Still some of the best memories!

At one of our Christmas gatherings, some of the older teen cousins were able to chase the visiting Santa down the road (we always tried to figure out what uncle was missing ;D ).  What a surprise when Santa jumped into a station wagon and left them in the snow.

I'm still doing! lol

The reunion isn't until August, so I still have some time to craft and try to figure out what else I'm going to do. :)

Honestly, my mind has been elsewhere lately and haven't done too much with it. I really need to get back into it soon, though! Otherwise I'm going to forget what I need to do! :P
