Camping/Hiking

Hey guys,

 I like to go camping or hiking and am always looking for suggestions as to what I can bring along with me. Some of the stuff I usually bring is:

 A knife
 First aide kit
 MRE's
 Compass
 Flashlight
 Flint striker
 Canteen
 Sleeping bag
 Paracord
 Monocular
 folding shovel
 

So anyway, if you have any suggestions feel free to share them.

My list is similar, sounds like you go rustic...no tent?

A few extra items I would bring, added to your list: (based on a short trip.)
Waterproof match holder with strike spot, filled with strike all matches.
An oil lantern, small bottle of oil
A small field telescope (if possible)
Flask full of Scotch... ;D

Oh, and a tent... :o

I've gone on a few 3 day Au Sable canoe trips with that list, plus a small cooler of food and water...You're set for a few days.

Iodine tablets or a water purifier
Waterproof matches
Emergency blanket
Small unbreakable mirror

I camped a lot with my first beau who was into survivalist stuff. Can you tell? lol

This makes me want to go hiking!

All good suggestions except I like building my own shelters rather than carrying a tent, which tends to slow me down. Also isn't a monocular pretty much the same thing as a field telescope :P

Water purifier is a great idea...I've seen some that are like big straws.

I've seen those around.

By the way, I was buying some rope and duct tape the other day when the cashier asked my why I was buying them. I told her for camping and she said she had to ask because you could use that stuff for tying somebody up. WTF!! lol

I was buying about 200 ft of rope, am I going to be tying up 10 people or something? Jeez

Bug Spray/Towlettes, sunscreen could be added to the list with minimal weight/space.

I also suggest a good but small camera and a waterproof bag for valuables.

Also, I like a walking stick - as they are useful for a variety of things, some hold attachments for the scope/camera, and can be used to ward off pests.

Luxuries, indeed!   I once knew a young boy who used leaves....and got poison ivy! 8*
 I like your ideas, Prof.  A walking stick was the first thing my dad would give us on any trek through the woods or across open land.  You made good memories return.

Yep, my Dad did that, too! Whenever we went for a walk (which we did a lot in search of hickory nuts) we each had to find our "cudgel." Not sure why, but that's what he always called our walking sticks! ;D

Either a couple of high quality plastic trash bags (lots of uses but often most used is to make a rain poncho)...

or one of those cheap blue poly tarps...  you can find them for $.79 sometimes...

lots of uses and a couple of them will make an emergency shelter.

I guess they got to be sure of people this day and age...I think I might have messed with her and said it was for the hooker in my trunk... :o  ;D
