BY JOSH KATZENSTEIN

A Dearborn city councilman missed Monday's State of the City address after being assaulted Sunday evening outside Joe Louis Arena.

Robert Abraham, who has served on the City Council since 2002, was attacked after the Red Wings game against the Blackhawks because the suspect took issue with friends of Abraham's son wearing Blackhawks gear.

Abraham's 22-year-old son is a senior at Loyola University in Chicago and came home to see the game with two friends from college.

"This one gentleman took exception to the Blackhawks jersey my son's friends were wearing and became very aggressive," Abraham said Monday evening, adding he tried to calm the man down.

"He just couldn't let it go, and before I knew it I was on (my) back."

Abraham's wife and 14-year-old daughter were waiting on Jefferson Avenue to pick up the group. The assault happened about 10 feet from the car, he said.

Violence of any kind like this is wrong, but I would be foolish to wear a Wings jersey to Chicago, or a Tigers jersey to New York.  Maybe it SHOULD be okay but is it safe?

Shame things like this happen but...............

Mr. Gump always said "Stupid is as Stupid does".U just don't wear the opposition's jersey to a game. This type of incident is hardly surprising. This has me asking myself how bright is this councilman is.

Only one person to blame for the attack and that's the Neanderthal who couldn't control himself because of someones clothing, seriously dude...Go back to your cave!

I hope this guy gets what's coming to him... >:(

The "stupid" thing is thinking you can beat someone up because they don't support the same team as you...This makes me hate Detroit even more.

I've worn my Wings jersey to United Center and my Tigers to Comiskey (or whatever they call it today). Difference being there are always a lot of Detroit fans in these venues. I guess I could see the same thing happening to me. Shame you can't walk down the street with another teams jersey on, but there is a reason that Detroit isn't exactly a tourist destination.

For every Lions home game, I try to instigate people in opposing jerseys into punching me. If they do they get kicked out and I get a smile on my face.  I haven't had it happen yet, but I'm going to keep trying.  You never wear the opposing teams colors somewhere unless you plan on getting into a fight.

I  had a friend verbally assaulted at the UofM  tOSU basketball game.  Since he wasn't wearing Michigan colors the guy in front of him continued to harass him until my friend says he turned him in.  Security removed the guy when he did it again.  It's ridiculous what some fans do.

I've also worn my Steelers jersey to Ford field. You only get into a fight if you're looking to do so. Going in you know what you're in for.

I had some Packers fans sit in front of me this year at the Thanksgiving game.  I have a voracious yell similar to that of Gerard Butler in 300.  I can also keep it up all game.  Lets just say that by the second quarter my yell happened to have changed it's trajectory from the roof of Ford Field to the ears of the Packers fans in front of me.  I wasn't shouting anything nasty, I was just being really loud and I was completely sober.  If the security guards want to kick me out for cheering my Defense, I would speak to their superiors about it.

The family was walking down the sidewalk when this animal was driving down the street, stopped his vehicle, got out and assaulted this family.
