Christiancy and Lincoln Thanks for the memories!
« on: March 28, 2012, 12:27:37 PM »

This absolutely breaks my heart. What and the hell is happening to the community I grew up in?

I have so many fond memories at Christiancy and some at Lincoln as well. Generations of people have attended these schools and with a few swings of the wrecking ball they'll all be distant memories. This is a travesty to the neighborhoods that surround these schools. What happened to all the "interest" the school board claimed they had from developers when they shuttered these buildings? I guess we all knew it would happen sooner or later but honestly once torn down this changes Monroe forever. Very sad.

Like it or not, that's progress. Hopefully they will make parks of the property, that would be nice.

Anything positive would be good, but the last time I was by Lincoln there was a chain link fence around the playground so the kids couldn't even access it.

Well at least they haven't decided to sell the land yet, so parks are a likely use until they do what they did with the former school site at 4th and Cass...   small park and some homes built on the lot.

Does anybody have any connections to the city, such that a budding photographer (like me) might get access to the buildings before they're demolished?

This is a shame, I hope you're right about the park idea...anything else would sell it short.  Lot's of memories... :-\

LORDFLY, I hope you can get access for some pictures, wish I could help...

It would be nice if the schools made these buildings available for a walk through before they're torn down. I'm sure a lot of people would like pictures or just a chance to take a walk down memory lane. Again it's a shame that it's come down to this.

MPS should be ashamed. I am very disappointed that these buildings weren't made available to the public before their demolition. Very sad.

Admittedly, I haven't followed this topic very much, but I hate seeing this happen.   Where I came from they took an old elementary school and turned it into the local police station.   Seems it could have earned them some money and made a nice new business if nothing else.

I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a few bricks to use in my garden. I was over taking pictures last night and spoke with a few neighbors who were obviously upset and very concerned as to what the future of the property will be. Just part of Monroe's transition to Deledo.

I asked that at the School office on Macomb and that was the original plan. They have had a lot of people wanting to go through the school(s) for pictures. But.... I was told later that the plan was scrapped because "lawyers" told them that it would be too much of a insurance liability.

I just wanted to go through Lincoln with a group for a paranormal investigation to see it was possiable to get Mrs. Valmassie (not sure if spelled right) and Whistling Willie on audio, video or maybe in a picture.
Again, too much of a insurance liablity

That's a shame Mayo I would have been interested in your findings. It seems as if they would have had to have kept insurance on the buildings anyway.

As bitter as it is to watch your old school be torn down, you must understand the concern of letting people inside.  There is WAY too much liability.  People could trip down stairs or hurt themselves on  whatever.  I understand the emotions connected to this, but I also understand the owners'  unwillingness to open the doors for people to wander through the buildings (even for some very well intended reasons of nostalgia).

I'm not surprised at all that it will remain closed until it is wrecked.

My Jr High in another town has long since been turned into dust, replaced with a newer school.

From a memory standpoint, it was heartbreaking.

From a facility standpoint, it is a much better situation for students.

I feel badly for those feeling heartaches as they watch the buildings go down.
