They've been used for years in Europe.  The town I grew up in had a business district built around one.  St. Armand's Circle in Sarasota FL is another famous business district built around the concept...

Here are few links to what I've read about the one proposed in Whiteford Twsp. in the last few days:

There are a few about 15-20 miles north of Dundee off of 23. Holy hell are those confusing the first time you go through them.

Those are at the Geddes Rd. exit on the north edge of Ann Arbor...

I agree...the 23/Geddes roundabout was pretty confusing at first...but for the most part seems to work well.

Twice I had an issue where I was stuck a few cars back trying to exit off of 23...but nobody could proceed because of a seemingly endless stream of traffic...took a long time to just enter into the roundabout.

I agree but not only that... It seems like the drivers on Geddes feel that they have the right of way and don't have to pay attention to the Yield sign entering the circle.

Spend the money on St. Anthony repairing it instead.  IMO, I think that the addition of a traffic light at the end of the ramp where NB 23 intersects St. Anthony to control exiting traffic and traffic entering the NB ramp is all that's needed.  Few vehicles continue on EB St. Anthony whereas most turn NB on 23.  The truckstops on the west side of the interchange cause the congestion and installing lights with actuation strips in the truck stop(s) driveway aprons would eliminate most of the issues, at a much reduced (financial) cost.

I've never expected much as far as common sense from traffic engineers.

Roundabouts are fine in a rural, low traffic setting.  That isn't what this is.
