I don't see it generally as an insult...   I believe (like a lot of other words) it could be turned into an insult by using it in a certain context.

When we first moved down here from the central part of the state I would hear it quite often from people in the DownRiver area...  to differentiate from even more 'DownRiver' I believe.

Others have used it on here (including ME) way before this and I don't think I've ever seen it intended as a putdown to anyone ;) ;) ;)

I've heard the terms Taylortucky, Ypsitucky, and Cincitucky. Monroetucky is new to me but my grandfather did move here from Middlesboro so why not. I'm sure the original poster meant it to be derogatory but I'm proud of my heritage. This area has had plenty of southern cultural influences. Think of the food alone chicken and dumplings, biscuits and gravy, green beans and fatback, cobblers of all variety, and numerous other dishes that were undoubtedly prepared in a cast iron skillet. It is rather insulting when I think of the term in relation to my family but to each there own.
I have only personally witnessed folks using -tucky in a derogatory form.

Here are a couple examples from a popular slang dictionary:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Ypsitucky

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Taylortucky

Folks have used a number of terms to be disrespectful to Appalachian Americans.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillbilly_Highway
While I do believe it was meant to be inflammatory, it is something I can generally ignore.   I've seen more than enough posts recently that were bordering on obscenely inflammatory that really bothered me much more.
I'd call it insulting commentary...I don't particularly care for it, but I think all labels like this are for the weak minded and purely derogatory... :P

Again, one must consider the context and intent.
My argument was that law enforcement officers weren't needed in the Monroe County school system because the kids are basically good.

Now take a look at my actual words:

"...but it's really only needed in the hard-core crime plagued schools, NOT MonroeTucky"

"So MonroeTucky is an insult?
I feel it's more of a commentary on the harmless nature of the residents...sort of like Mayberry."

I didn't know that - but heck if people really wanted to know there are many other ways - such as the "search" and enter the key words.

It's an odd term, and I've heard similar for Ypsilanti as well...
The old Steel mill and later Ford in Monroe did have many people come up I-75 and settle in this area, although back then it wasn't I-75...  Seems to me the major US hwy from Michigan south back then was US 41 which still exists in the UP.

It was US 23 Professor...   Years ago I worked with a gal in Toledo and she was from West "by God" Virginia...   we were talking at lunch one day and she told me that in high school they didn't learn the 3 Rs like most kids (Readin', wRitin' and aRithmetic), but rather they learned "Readin', wRitin', and Route 23"...   or in other words...  when you got out of high school get out of W. Virginia and go to Toledo or Detroit and get a job in anything but the coal mines!!!

US 41 is in fact in the UP however it gets there through Illinois and Wisconsin and as far as I can tell it always has...

Here's the link where I verified that...   I worked in the Bay City and Saginaw areas for years and US 23 runs concurrent with I-75 up there and I've never heard a reference to US 41 along that side of the state...  the "Old Dixie", but not 41!!!

I know plenty of people that use it all the time, especially after encountering some of the fine "specimen" that live here, as they put it. The people I know use it in a derogatory manner, implying the people of Monroe are inbreed and redneck.

Monroetucky just doesn't sound good to me.

Well I guess it is better than being called a "briarhopper" or a damn hillbilly.   ???

The few times that I have been down south everyone would say "you northerners talk funny"   :P

I'm thinking it's right here in our community.  There are actually several more if you go to YouTube:  http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=monroetucky&oq=monroetucky&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_nf=1&gs_l=youtube-psuggest-reduced.3...189678.192475.0.192881.11.11.0.0.0.0.138.977.9j2.11.0.

anyone recognize the location or the young guys in the vids?

Since I was born here & related to half the county  ill just say I would never even think of Monroe as a "Tucky " &  I just dont like it ( JMO )!!!!!!!!!  :P

I just know my mom (from Monroe)  & dad (from Erie ) used to say that a Hillbilly is a "Michigan Potato Farmer " , & I always thought it was Brahopper , LOL .But then again my Family sayes "Kinchen (kitchen )  , Warshing (washing) , Taffyoka (Tapioca) , Fuchadive (Fugitive) .  8* 8* 8* , But what do I know I was just born & raised here  :)  :) :)

okay.....BRD...that video is hilarious....and yes, I, personally find any comment on the south to be offensive....born and raised in a VERY small community in the mountains of Middle Tennessee....proud of my southern heritage....I have to admit there are aspects of my culture that I don't understand but have found that 'redneck' and 'trash' can be found anywhere we have ever traveled....from the East Coast to the West Coast....far North and far South..... there are times when I get really tired of the comments on my accent...... and tired of being called a 'hillbilly'.....most of my family is college educated and not 'redneck' at all....we just come from a very closed community and a very small town....I have never understood this need for people to label and name call ..... oh, well.....I teach my kids to smile and move on.....

I'll second that weasel...You can find "trash" anywhere, and education and wealth have very little to do with it...

"So MonroeTucky is an insult?

So why do you use the term MonroeTucky and not MonroeBerry?
