Allegations Against Bedford Township Official
« on: December 08, 2007, 03:25:29 PM »

An article in Thursday’s Monroe Evening News concerning allegations by a Bedford Township trustee against the township clerk caught my attention, especially the part about allowing employees to bring guns to the workplace.  Most government offices that I have been in have a warning posted at the entrance something to the effect “firearms are not allowed in this building”.  Why is Bedford Township allowing guns in its township hall?  Pretty scary stuff if you ask me.  Here is the link to the article that appeared in the MEN

I guess I don't get it - what is so scary about a guy that brings a gun to work?  Provided he is within the law to do so (and he is, according to the article), I see nothing wrong with it.

IF the allegations about him looking at porn on a township computer are accurate, I think it's disgusting, and very inappropriate, but it is not illegal.  Vote him out of office, or recall him if you don't like his conduct.  The article also said that the BATF and the Sheriff investigated, and found no laws were broken.  What was the BATF doing looking into this?  What jurisdiction do they have?  Concealed pistol laws are State laws, and are enforced by the local police, and the State police, NOT any Federal agency.  THAT is more 'scary' to me than having a law-abiding official LEGALLY taking a gun to work.

I see no problem with it as long asd he is properly licensed to carry a firearm and there is no Township ordinance against it.

I bet a lot of the victims in the mall shooting in Omaha thought that having guns allowed in the mall would be "pretty scary stuff" too. If one person had a legally concealed pistol in that incident, they could have ended that incident very quickly with minimal loss of life. The same holds true with legally carried weapons in twp halls or wherever. Statistically, people who have concealed carry permits commit very few crimes. It's the guy without the permit who has the gun you have to worry about..

Amen Skippy!

Criminals don't obey the law so making an area "gun free zones" do nothing to prevent a criminal from bring a gun into them.

Who is responsible at the Bedford Township Offices for posting that it is illegal to have firearms within the building? . . ..Shockman??? He has always acted like he is above the law. Bedford Township has a website that contains land / house ownership information, including pictures of both front and back of houses. When I learned of this, I called the Township  Office and complained that I did not want pictures of my house on the site - who knows what kind of criminals are looking at these as a way to "case" locations. My backyard is private, and the only way to get a picture is to walk onto my property. Who gave them this right to do this? Well, I was told they are within legal rights to have this information on their website. But,,, if you search for "Shockman" nothing comes up!!!! Why is it that his information is protected, mine is not?? Wilburn and other employee's information comes up. I say fire Shockman!

Thank you "livewire".

It is not against the law to carry a pistol (concealed) into a township office, provided the person has a concealed weapon permit. A number of townships have posted "no weapons" by entrances only to remove them. Whether or not an ordinance against concealed weapons is legal is questionable.

Anyone else have more info on this subject?

Wow, I didn't know that Bedford Township posted pictures of our homes.  I just checked it out, and you were right!  I think that you should repost this info on the Bedford Now web site so that other township residents know that this is going on.  Thanks again for the info.  Here is the link to the Bedford Now web site:

Livewire,
U've had some experiance with a less than normal acting elected official. If you witnessed this official cleaning his pistol on his desk in front of the other staff members and waving it around in his office in full view of the public and other employees are you seriously telling me your reaction would be to calmly attempt to recall him or just not vote for him hoping he would be replaced? Would you seriously defend his right to bear arms?
I hardly think so.

Now do you get it?

Yes, Maverick, I have had a great deal of experience with 'less than normal acting' elected officials, as you well know.  Waving a gun around in an office with other staff members present would be unsafe, to say the least.  I would possibly even consider it criminal.  No doubt about it.  However, my comment was in response to Archiebunkertoo's post, and the MEN article, neither of which mentioned anything about anyone waving a gun around.  They simply mentioned bringing a gun to the office.  Please don't get me wrong - I am neither supporting or attacking Mr. Shockman.  I've never even met the man.  I will defend the right of law-abiding citizens to legally carry a concealed pistol, however.  Regarding bringing a gun to work, in my original post I said, "Provided he is within the law to do so (and he is, according to the article), I see nothing wrong with it."  I stand by that statement.  HOWEVER, if there is other information that I am unaware of, and he violated a law (such as brandishing), then I DO see something wrong, and he should be held responsible for his actions.  At that point I wouldn't need to recall him, because I would see to it he was in jail.  Actually, that's easier than a recall.  Perhaps Archiebunker, or the MEN, should have included ALL of the facts pertaining to the gun incident.

Then, everyone can 'get it'.    ;)

By the way, Archiebunkertoo, you should not post duplicate threads.  This should either be here in the news section, or the politics section.  It is also in the miscellaneous section, and shouldn't be, in my opinion.

The duplicate posts and its responses have now been merged into the "news" thread.
