Globalization, World outsources pregnancies to India
« on: December 30, 2007, 04:34:08 PM »

Ritu Sodhi, a furniture importer from Los Angeles who was born in India, spent $200,000 trying to get pregnant through in-vitro fertilization, and was considering spending another $80,000 to hire a surrogate mother in the United States.
"We were so desperate," she said. "It was emotionally and financially exhausting."
Then, on the Internet, Sodhi found Patel's clinic
The surrogate mothers and the parents sign a contract that promises the couple will cover all medical expenses in addition to the woman's payment, and the surrogate mother will hand over the baby after birth. The couples fly to Anand for the in-vitro fertilization and again for the birth. Most couples end up paying the clinic less than $10,000 for the entire procedure, including fertilization, the fee to the mother and medical expenses

Doesn't surprise me - the U.S. market always skyrockets the prices. That's why a lot of couples looking for IVF go to S. Africa.

Medical tourism is a booming business... a lot of people go to other countries for elective procedures..  Mexico has special hospitals just for americans and usually the packages include air fare, transportation and stays at five star hotels at some of the best vacation places in Mexico... people are going in droves for lap banding, a procedure that will cost you about 35k here is only 8k in Mexico...

My sister is and has been a ARNP for years and she went and had the lap band done there...she said it was the cleanest hospital she had seen in years and the care was excellent....

It is just a matter of time though before the government starts to deny travel for americans seeking medical treatment outside of the states.....just like they did with the pharmacuticals....
