Wow, thanks.  That sounds very serious and I hope it gets cleaned up and not just covered up.

Sounds like the only "covering up" that's been going on is by officials...   these people notified somebody from the county health dept. back in March and it sounds like all they did was send a report to Lansing to the DEQ...

A quick Google search for tire shredding/recycling finds a facility at 476 Huber Drive (A on my aerial below) and those tanks I've marked at B sure look like the same ones in the news video to me...

If, in fact, this is where it is I'm very glad I don't live in one of those homes in the300 or 400 blocks of Toll street 8* 8* 8*

Love it when you post a map, Dawg. Very helpful to understand where things happen. I didn't know that was now a Homrich property. I'm guessing the toxic goo is related to the toxic fumes that used to emanate from the factory a few years ago when it was IKO (??). I remember seeing protest signs in the yards of neighbors with a skull and crossbones before the company closed up operations there.

So glad the previous and current owners are so conscientious about cleaning up their own messes.  >:(

There was an article in the MEN about a week ago (it was for Earth Day) about how Homrich "recycles" industrial properties in the area.  I'm pretty sure they specifically mentioned this property in the article...

however...

a Google News search shows the article but the links to it are all dead...  maybe from the recent switch over to the new website :-\ :-\ :-\

Unfortunately that has been going on for many, many years....  our waterways in Michigan are still contaminated from industrial waste over the last 100 years...   even at the bottom of the River Raisin...  it's why we have to limit the amount of fish we eat from Lake Erie...

Up at Midland the Dow Chemical company routinely just dumped all their waste into the local river which eventually ran all the way to Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron...  They have finally been taken to task and have spent millions...   I'm sure it would have been a lot less expensive not to have dumped it in the first place...

The Ford plant in Monroe was a big polluter in the River Raisin too....  the paper factories!!!

Now they're all gone along with their big profits and the taxpayers are left to foot the bill...

I don't recall now what they ever did figure out on the fumes or odors from the plant...

if it's "just" tar then it probably isn't real toxic...   but it is still hazardous to animals (obviously from the video) and could certainly be a tragedy waiting to happen if a small child got in there :o :o :o

Shame on Homrich for letting a tank just ooze crap all over the ground.  Then the poor choice to just send a crane to just cover it up while cameras are rollling was a pretty stupid PR move.

HOWEVER, the potency and toxicity of a tar to instantly kill a raccoon on the spot would have to be incredible.  My guess is the poor critters got stuck in the tar and couldn't get out.

That's what I was kind of thinking, they got stuck in the crap... :P

Yeah, genius move with the covering with rocks, that makes it so much better...Go man go... >:(

I still want to know what the Hell it is and if it is toxic and how bad the ground in contaminated.  I think Homrich is going to have some hefty fines and clean up costs to face here in the near future...!

I don't blame Homrich completley for mess. When IKO was closed, whatever materials was left, should have been removed from the property as soon as possiable.

Again, assuming it's "just" tar I'm not sure that getting stuck there and just dying over several days is all that great of a way for an animal to die :o :o :o

Is that the place that was in the local news about making shingles or something like that?  If it is then it very well could be "just tar" but I agree that it should have been removed before purchase or immediately after and not allowed to remain there.

True, but it would change the entire story if it were just tar.  Maybe they dumped rocks on it to make an asphalt driveway..

The rocks were small boulder sized...

not sure what they plan on driving down their "driveway" :-\ :-\ :-\

Not sure what you mean by "it would change the entire story"...

Tar is a substance and the animals are dead...

what would be changed ??? ??? ???
