The rocks were small boulder sized...

not sure what they plan on driving down their "driveway" :-\ :-\ :-\

Not sure what you mean by "it would change the entire story"...

Tar is a substance and the animals are dead...

what would be changed ??? ??? ???

You can't see that the underlining dramatic part of this headline and story is that there might be some toxic substance spilled that is so poisionous that animals are instantly dying?

I seen this on channel 7 today and they talked to Roger. Roger said some vandals came in removed the seals and opened up the tanks and let the stuff leak out. They filed a report with the police dept. He also said the tanks are scheduled to be removed, maybe why the crane is there. Those people in the video sure are dramatic, the guy picked up an animal and claimed it was a beaver. Never seen a beaver in Monroe county. I think this whole thing is really blown out of proportion. There's been a lot worse crap dumped in Michgan water ways than this little bit.

Full WXYZ article at:  http://www.wxyz.com/dpp/news/region/monroe_county/tar-like-substances-causing-controversy-at-monroe-business

Daniel Lovett works at Tire Management Recycling, a company which is in the process of being evicted by the property owner.

Homrich arrived while 7 Action News was at the site and, although he informed us we were all trespassing, he did agree to be interviewed.
We were somewhat surprised when he admitted, "Yes it's contaminated, certified by the great state of Michigan."
When asked why he would rent the property, he said the small amount is allowed because its an industrial site.
Homrich added the cylinder started leaking because vandals opened them up.
"We filed a police report, they'll get 'em," he said.

Alisa Cosby owns the adjacent company where Daniel Lovett works and is embroiled in a legal battle with landlord Homrich.
She says she's asked the city, county and state to do something about the substance.
"No one will help us," she says. "My concern when I saw it was the nearby creek that goes to the Raisin River. I think this is a cover up of an environmental hazard."

No one was available for an interview at the Monroe City Hall but we are being told that there hasn't been a formal complaint or request for an inspection by anyone at Tire Management.

Well, there is a small creek in that area that does run to the river, but I don't see the Coast Guard getting involved...DNR, EPA are another matter...

There is a video with the WXYZ article Skittelroo posted...

you can see where it was leaking around the flange where they have covered it.  Somebody had to go to a lot of work to open that.

The aerial photo is from October of 2010...   I've looked at it a few times and can't decide if there's a small area of "something" or not...   I put an A beside it on the map below.  I believe the waterway the tire lady mentions is the ditch beside the railroad track.  That close to the river it's highly likely it does drain directly back to the river.

This "substance" looks too thick to have moved very far but every time it rains the runoff will most likely carry some of it away.

The critter they showed in the video looks like a muskrat to me...  and they don't usually get very far from some form of water.

It might be a small woodchuck and you're liable to find them anywhere.  It won't take a biologist very long to identify exactly what it is.

And now we have the whole story. Someone is losing their business and is pissed off.

Thanks for pointing that out, Fry.   I honestly did miss that line (in very light gray and tiny type at the end of the article).  Having a lot of visual difficulties nowadays.

Thanks, marilyn.monroe.  I feel a little better now.   The only problem was that I may have posted too much from the article (according to guidelines for fair use).
